+Jay Bing Mainly because of timing, and that their old record label had dropped them. I'm pretty sure they had been told that they would have been getting bigger if they had just made bro country songs when they were with that label, too. But anyway, because of being dropped, the almost-completed second album they had been created (they had already released one; Love and Theft) was then practically taken away from them. Stephen (one of the band members) once said that each song costed them thirteen grand. Otherwise, Love and Theft have to wait five years to be able to record the songs again (even the ones that they wrote themselves). They also can't tie songs down, so to speak; if someone else wrote it, the writer could just go and give it to another artist, really. This is what happened with the song Going Out like That that Reba published- it was originally going to be Love and Theft's. There's even videos of Stephen and Eric preforming the song. I believe this is what also happened to the song 21 that Hunter Hayes put out, too, as there are videos of them preforming the song with slightly different lyrics (although I have no actual proof of that, it's just an inference). Stephen also helped write Martina McBride's Wrong Baby Wrong (Love and Theft actually produced their own version of the song with the original lyrics on their album Whiskey on My Breath), and Taylor Swift's wrote Hey Stephen about him after Love and Theft opened for her on tour. The band has really had so many opportunities and great songs that could have made them bigger and better known, but unfortunately, Stephen and Eric have just tended to be fairly unlucky with when they publish their songs, and with labels. They've said themselves that some of their songs that didn't get that big were similar to songs put out a few months later that ended up skyrocketing. Luckily, with their newest album Whiskey on My Breath, they produced it themselves, and hopefully will be able to keep making music on their own terms. Although it might not be getting them an enormous amount of new fans, us Theftheads tend to be incredibly supportive of the band, and many of us stick around. Plenty of us are just wishing for that huge and unstopping start for them- they've been doing this since 2006 (although they started as a trio). Recently, actually, the song Whiskey on my Breath made it to number fifteen on the iTunes charts, months after it had been released (we can thank Bobby Bones for that). If anyone deserves to get huge, it's definitely Stephen and Eric, and after meeting them twice, I can strongly say that they come off as extremely thankful for any support, and obviously love making their music. And after this long, and with the amount of troubles they've had, I think it's safe to say that Love and Theft will remain around and making music for the absolute longest that they can. I just hope they get huge before then!
