It is good to keep the Love Canal Story alive. Many important lessons have been learned through this tragedy. 20 years ago I walked the ruins of the Love Canal neighborhood with Lois Conn Gibbs accompanied by past Love Canal residents and published an article in a local community newspaper. Now there is concern of spreading contamination in a populated area north of the original dump site. It is hard to believe that they placed senior citizens adjacent to the dump site ..unbelievable. Thank you for keeping the story and the lessons learned alive.

Nope lesson not learned in East Palestine OH the start of another attempt to cover up after a train derailment and poisoning of the residents. At least in this case the EPA cared about lives somewhat and made the workers wear protection while doing the clean up. Instead of faking results. You should cover it 😀

I remember driving through the Love Canal in the 90s when all the houses were still there but boarded up. It was so creepy. Some of the houses the boards were torn off and you can see in the windows of those houses. I remember looking in some of the windows and see all the furniture still there and dishes on the table and in the sink. Toys on the floor in the living room. The tv still there. In the garages they still had the lawnmower, bikes, basketballs etc... Everything had to be left behind. It was so creepy seeing all that stuff still in the houses after all those years.

I remember going around the same time... the elementary public school was still there and they still had construction paper cutouts in the windows.

Actually, Love started to build is canal circa 1891 and ran out of money within a couple of years after some changes in plans for the power plant project associated, rendering the need for the canal redundant. The half built canal soon filled with water and became a swimming hole for locals...then the city started to dump domestic refuse in it by the 1930s...Hooker Chemical also dumped a large amount of solvents and other wastes, mostly in steel 55gallon drums, by the early 1940s. After 1947 the dump was filled in, though not properly capped...this land was then sold to the city for one dollar!...a notation in the deed from 1952 discloses the presence of chemical wastes, but doesn't elaborate. From there, disaster...

That's not the school. The school and about 200 houses were demolished and buried several feet below the ground in that fence area. The ground would not be "buckling" under you. It is normal ground and firm. I have been there several times. Where you were standing is not private property, and it is not a restricted area, it is public city property. The signs are for the area behind the fence. That area is restricted.

Visiting in 2023 after the recent Ohio train event. I recall hearing about Love Canal growing up but was too young to really understand. Thank you for this documentary. Now I wonder how this disregard for the health and well-being of Americans continues due to accidents, poor policies, or questionable corporate actions. And it is frightening. I mean, we have only one planet to live on.

Still hard to believe that all of these decades later underneath all of that nice green grass behind the fences, lies one of the most toxic and lethal chemical brews ever created. Love Canal will never be the same again.

@@ALuimes nope, it's still there. All they could do at the time was clear the area of housing, and then contained the most heavily contaminated areas with a mixture of concrete. Which was then covered with a thick base of heavy clay. Which is why the area is still heavily restricted today.

It's been cleaned up. All the really toxic stuff has been removed and shipped off site.

William T. Love did not run of money in the 1940s. He ran out of money circa 1830s. Love Canal started to be utilized as a dangerous dumpling ground in the early 1940s.

Canal was construced in the early 1890s, not the 1830s. It was to be part of a hydro electric project for an early power plant.

My aunt and uncle lived on 91st street when I was a kid. Spent alot of time walking around the canal. I always wanted to walk around in the old school but couldn't get my cousin to do it. Haven't been there in at least 20 years

My grandmother worked not too far from Love Canal when she was pregnant with my mother. She was born with a cleft palate, we all have symptoms or diagnosis of sticker's syndrome.

Stickler syndrome is genetic which means it is hereditary.

​@linsioux217 it is caused by a genetic mutation, which can be hereditary. However, those chemicals were causing genetic mutations in love canal residents, so it could be caused by the chemicals or it could be hereditary. But you'd have to test if she had the mutation before she even lived there.

It was William T. Love back in the late 1800s. It was 1910 when he lost the land to foreclosure. The 1930s and 40s is when Hooker started to dump chemicals on the property. In the 1950s is when Hooker was forced to sell the land to the Niagara Falls school board. The school board knew there was chemicals buried there but built a school there always. Housing development followed soon there after. It wasn't until the 1970s when the whole scope of the situation was blown open by local residents, state and federal officials. Learn your history before posting things on KZbin man. Far as the site goes now adays its totally safe. It was declared a superfund site and was cleaned up.

We have the EDITH AVENUE LANDFILL in my backyard. Louder Than Life Concert tore up the topsoil. I don't think they knew it was a Landfill! They call it Champions Park! Young people are playing soccer games on the EDITH AVENUE LANDFILL! I don't think anyone knows what their playing on, or building on. It's leaking now into Beargrass Creek!

It's constantly monitored by EPA and they're particularly paranoid about any containment issues. People have resettled in some areas with zero problems and their homes are monitored as well.

Only 2 people refused to move out of the most contaminated inner ring of homes in the late 70's. All the other inner ring residents evac'd once the Fed funds came through. The dangerous area has been sampled, remediated and continues to be monitored to this day.
