Iconic song from RUSHs' debut album.. That's original drummer John Rutsey on the drums. Neil Peart replaced him after the release of this album because John had some health issues, and of course, the rest is history. John was an excellent drummer in his own right, but of course, Neil was in a league of his own!! 🏆🏆

Great reaction going back to where it all started in 1974. If you want to see what is quite possibly the greatest performance of this song, check out their 2011 Time Machine tour. They had closed a three hour show with this song, stretching it out and absolutely blowing the roof off the arena - all as they were closing in on 60-years-old. I'm sure I'm not the only one to say this, but as an old and long-time Rush fan, I always smile seeing younger people like you getting into and appreciating their music. It makes me remember why I loved them in the first place.

My daughter liked this track! Rush are almost a one-of-a-kind. I don't know a single band who have produced such an amazing stream of awesome progressive rock albums and they're all so different! I still listen to Rush albums on a regular basis. I think Alex, Geddy and Neil (RIP and missed) should be justifiably proud of what they produced and the countless number of guitarists, bass players and drummers they inspired and they're such modest and wonderful people. I spent ages with Alex's own KZbin video in which he explains how to play "Closer to the Heart" properly. What a kind guy.

@@reliantncc1864 You just sound like a big fan whose feelings are hurt. He said he acknowledges they're talented it's just not his thing. I think Rush has a few great songs and I recognize how impactful they've been on music but I'd never sit down and listen to a full album. Their lyrics are goofy, Geddy's voice gets on my nerves after a few minutes and I'm not really into prog rock. I don't think they're bad or untalented, it's just not the type of stuff I'd sit around and listen to for hours. If Tom Sawyer comes on the radio I'll turn it off but I'll never say 'damn i wish they played more Rush!' There's a huge difference between 'this band sucks' and 'I'm not a fan'

Rush debuted in the US on Cleveland radio station WMMS, thanks to an astute young music director from Massachusetts, Donna Halper. As a resident of that great city, I was a beneficiary of that serendipity. The song that launched Rush to success was "Working Man," from their titular album "Rush."

Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson met as kids in Willowdale, a suburb of Toronto, Canada... They both loved rock music, both played guitar and would jam together in the late 60's... Alex joined a band called Rush w/ John Rutsey (drums) and when they needed a bassist/ vocalist, he asked Geddy to fill in and joined soon after... Rush played school events because they were still young kids... but in 1971, Canada lowered the legal drinking age to 18, which allowed Rush to play in the Toronto bars. It was there playing gigs that Rush got their playing chops and wrote original songs... Ray Danniels was a local manager who saw Rush live and offered to manage them... In 1973, the band had an album's worth of music, but no one would sign them to a record deal. Danniels financed the record and released the first Rush album independently in 1974. Geddy Lee wrote the band's lyrics and a lot of them were a bit silly - "In the mood"... "What you're doing"... A copy of the record went to a radio station in Cleveland, Ohio... and a DJ picked the song 'Working man' to play off the first Rush album so that she could take a bathroom break 😂 And as it turned out, it was the perfect song for working-class Cleveland back then... However, listeners kept calling the station thinking 'Working man' was new Led Zeppelin 😂 and the DJ's had to explain that it was Rush, a Canadian band. A lot happened in 1974... Mercury Records based in Chicago opted to sign Rush and remix the album w/ producer Terry Brown (who worked w/ Rush until 1982)... The first album was re-released and Rush was booked for an extensive US tour as an opening band. Unfortunately, drummer John Rutsey was not enthusiastic about the extra demands, and Rush's managers noticed that Rutsey was not taking care of himself (He was diabetic, he drank and was not healthy) They insisted that John Rutsey be replaced before the first tour. Neil Peart was working at his dad's farm parts store when he was asked to audition for Rush... He had never heard of the band or their music, but was encouraged to audition. Geddy and Alex thought he was 'goofy' at first, but he could play hard and fast... he was in. Peart said he liked the guys right away and got into their music. While touring the USA in 1974/ '75, Geddy and Alex noticed that Neil read heavily and was very opinionated... and they felt he could write better lyrics for Rush, while Geddy and Alex worked on the music... Neil accepted the challenged and would contribute lyrics and drums from the 2nd Rush album 'Fly by night' in 1975.

This song is from Rush’s first album (1974) which is self titled and features the original drummer John Rutsey. But because Rutsey’s diabetes was so bad and couldn’t tour to support the album, he left the band. Neil Peart was then hired about 4 months after Rush’s self titled album debut. Peart’s debut was on the album Flight By Night in 1975.

Oooh hoo! This is the first Rush tune I ever heard. Straight from the 8-track player in my boyfriend's '69 Lincoln in 1977😊 I was 17 and said. "WHO IS THIS???" It's from their 1973 debut album and was the beginning of a lifelong appreciation of the band. Still my favorite of theirs. He also played his "2112" 8-track for me but that one may or may not have required intoxicating substances for me to get through at that time 😮 Crazy memories. Like a lot of other people have stated, it was one DJ at a radio station in Cleveland that started to play this song repeatedly which led to their "breaking out" in the states. Geddy has said many times this is his favorite song to play live.

That Radio Station Did that often. WMMS 101FM was the best in AOR They are Pioneers to the format and also to Countless names. Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, and Bruce Springsteen stand in that line among others. Blessed to have grown up in The 70's rocking in Cleveland.

In 1974, RUSH was still very much unknown in the United States. Donna Halper, a DJ at WMMS, was looking for a ‘bathroom song’ (a long song so they could use the restroom or take a smoke break) She remembered an import album a friend had gifted her, saw one of the songs was 7 minutes long and played it without ever listening to it. When the sing was over, she was flooded with phone calls asking her to ‘play that new Led Zeppelin song again!’ The rest is history. The liner notes to the official album when released includes a thanks to Donna Halper of WMMS

My roommate in college was a huge Rush fan so I got all of it, and I'm glad I did. This is early stuff. They were kids just trying to make it. A lot of their early albums are like rock operas. The entire record is a single concept. It's mindblowing. I got to see them in concert a couple of times and their sound was album-like. No other band I've seen could replicate their studio sound in concert like Rush. Keep 'em coming.

I can't believe you have not done this already, this is them in their hard rocking infancy with an iconic song that was them announcing their budding magnificence to the world. Another great rocker you probably have not done from them is Anthem off the 2nd album Fly By Night, the studio original still gives me chills and gives off Led Zeppelin vibes. If looking for an early prog epic from them, off the same album, do Bytor and the Snowdog, unreal mid section with Floyd/Zep/Rush atmosphere. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

I heard in a documentary that when WMMS in Cleveland first played this song people were calling asking where and when they could get the new Zeppelin album. Back in the 70's we listened to RUSH to hear Geddy on bass. He is one of the very best.

WMMS in Cleveland played this song and "introduced" Rush to the US. John Rutsey was the drummer on this album, his only album with the band. I can't remember all the Rush tunes you've listened to, but check out "The Trees" and "Xanadu" if you haven't already.

Alex wrote this about his father who always had two or three jobs to support his family, fast forward to their live version in Cleveland when they are 58 and Neil is 59 and they are still shredding this like the kids they were when they wrote it.

Apropos that you react to Rush the day after Gord passed - Geddy Lee: The first time we met was outside a local award show at a club in Toronto - a legendary poet, a songwriting inspiration - a gem of a man - I loved him. He used to bring his daughter who was a fan, to our shows, and he'd sit with her in the audience getting blasted with volume for three hours - a few months back he phoned me out of the blue, for no other reason than to say he'd just watched one of our concert films and really loved it. Every time I ran into him the first thing he would ask was how many gigs we'd done that year - he'd then proudly counter with the fact that he had played even more! RIP Gord - you are the man - the greatest Canadian. He to me is one of the greatest examples of timeless singer-songwriter, you know. A man dedicated to the word and to the tune. He is our poet laureate; he is our iconic singer-songwriter. He sent the message to the world that we're not just a bunch of lumberjacks and hockey players up here. You know, we're capable of sensitivity and poetry and that was a message delivered by the success of Gordon Lightfoot internationally. People were more willing to listen to someone from Canada because someone of such enormous talent had paved the way. Alex Lifeson said: A Canadian legend and one of the greatest songwriters of all time has left us. I’ll always remember Gord bringing his daughter Meredith to our Toronto shows and sharing a happy pre-show moment together. Safe travels, Gordie, on your Carefree Highway.

He admitted to trying to replicate Zeppelin in some way. Listen to their covers album Feedback-- who do they cover? Blue Cheer, The Yardbirds, The Who, Cream.

The DJ in Cleveland discovered this song when she was looking for a “bathroom song” or a song that could play long enough to go to the bathroom and get back before it ended! After playing it, the station was flooded with calls requesting the “ new Led Zeppelin song!”

I recently picked up an anniversary release of this on vinyl and it's just SO good.... Rutsey & Geddy lay down such a great bottom end and then Alex just kills it. The song that started it all for them and you can hear why... can only imagine hearing this on the radio for the first time. This was such an epic closer for so many of the shows that I was lucky enough to see them perform live.

You won't find more musical talent in a 3 man group anywhere!!! Alex, Geddy and Neil are all top tier musicians in every way. The Netflix docu a few years ago about the band was amazing. Their early years touring with KISS when they would go back to their room and practice after gigs while KISS partied with the groupies was awesome. What a dedicated bunch of talent blended into an amazing legacy band. Massive respect for RUSH.

This is my favorite Rush song. Such a great riff and groove. You really have to watch the live version done in Cleveland toward the end of their run. Old men still rocking the hell out of this song.

They were more influenced by Led Zeppelin. Ozzy could never sing this. People referred to them as the new Led Zeppelin.

You can definitely hear the influence of Black Sabbath. An absolute classic. The hardest, most rocking version of Rush.

This is their debut album. This is before Peart. The original drummer, John Rutsey, was very good. He had to leave for personal reasons and referred Peart to Alex & Geddy. You can hear Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath influences in this album

I went to see Rush when I was 20 in the middle 70s in Sioux City Iowa. They were so loud that my ears hurt and I spent a lot of time listening from the lobby of the arena.

Loved that you did the original version of Working Man. It inspired me to do a Rush binge watch on your channel. There are some essential Rush elements missing. Whenever possible, Rush live is a nice watch. And some of their songs are long, but so worth it. The great thing here is Neil stayed true to John’s parts on these songs after he took over. He could have easily embellished but didn’t. John’s drumming on this album was perfect for the tunes.

Since you guys liked this one even though it's not Neil on the drums. This album has some really good songs on it like "Finding My Way" and "In The Mood". You guys have got to absolutely check out the song "By-Tor And The Snow Dog". It's epic and does feature Neil. It's a fave among us Rush fans and I know you two will dig it.

Took my daughter to see Rush as her first concert. She was 9 & she managed to hang for the whole show until the very last song which was Working Man. The arena was packed full of screaming fans, the lights were going crazy, they set off huge fire jets and ended with several massive confetti cannon blasts. I looked over and daughter was fast asleep. 🤣

The drummer on this song and the debut Rush album was John Rutsey and not Neil Peart. John had to leave the band due to complications from diabetes, Neil was his replacement.

This album was my first RUSH experience way back in high school. I was searching through albums in our local Sam The Record Man back in the day when I came across the album and picked it up. I figured the album art was so cheap that the band only spent enough money to add 1 process colour and that the rest of their budget went in to recording the music so I bought the album. I was NOT disappointed. Many years later my son became a RUSH fan and his first live arena concert was RUSH 😁

Working Man is from Rush's debut album, the only album with original drummer John Rutsey. Rutsey was unable to tour with the band due to complications with his diabetes, and was replaced by Neil Peart. Peart was the drummer for Rush from then on until his death.

Great song and album. Can you believe that this album celebrates 50yrs in 2024. On drums was the original drummer John Rutsey, who was replaced by Neil on the 2nd album fly by night, due to health issues. The band took care of John until his death.

Saw them 1981. Dallas. This is my favorite rush song. Everytime Neil the drummer hit the drums the drum stick would go about 15 feet in the air and he would catch it Everytime he didn't even move to catch the drum stick it landed right in his hands
