My favorite line in this song. Hit me hard and stuck with me from the first time I ever heard it when I was just a young teen, because it resonated with me so much. Unfortunately I have always struggled with indecisiveness and letting life happen to me rather than consciously making choices, especially difficult ones. In that way these lyrics have kind of haunted me all my life as a sort of self fulfilling prophecy.

This is one of my favorite solos to play actually because, if you even are listening to Geddy or Neil or even think of what the bass nor drums are doing, they will literally throw you entirely off if you do. Alex known for his very chaotic solos because when most the time when he plays a solo he's on a totally different beat - it's very syncopated - and usually outside and related melodic place (almost outside) related to the bassline if you ever noticed.

@@tommack9395That's common with 3 piece rock acts, they are trying to fill the void left with from missing a extra guitar. So all three of them fill, it's not a secret they used tracks to pull it off live but the controlled it themselves for the most part. Quite few song where Alex changes guitar during the song, meanwhile Neil and Geddy would stay busy and so on.

I am a 54 year old criminal defense attorney who first heard RUSH when I was in 7th grade. I don't listen to RUSH that often these days because, honestly, their music is fully imprinted in my brain. More than the fact that Neil, Geddy and Alex made incredible music, what affected me are the ideas that came out of Neil Peart's lyrics. Neil helped me see what kind of person I wanted to be (Tom Sawyer) and he helped me feel that I wasn't alone in feeling weird as a kid (Subdivisions) or while drifting away in thoughts as a teenage boy (The Analog Kid). He inspired me to think about what it is to reach a pinnacle and then slowly waste away (Losing It) and he showed how the human spirit drives us all (Closer to the Heart) while also expanding on that showing me what human beings can achieve if they are driven towards what was thought to be impossible (Countdown) while simultaneously reminding me that those same powerful forces that build great things can exploit our human fears (The Weapon). Following Neil on his exploration of life taught me that being the stronger one does not mean that your will is justice (The Trees) while helping me to understand that their is a balance that governments can pass where disobeying the law is still possibly the right things to do (Red Barchetta) and that religion points us in the wrong direction (Freewill) far too often because we all need to question and think and rethink our path in life. Neil made me see that our relation to other people made us "alone and yet together like two passing ships" (Entre Nous) and he made me rejoice that the gift of music is something we all get to share (Spirit of Radio)...I can't explain what Neil's lyric about how music on the radio is "bearing a gift beyond price, almost free" does to me. I have spent more than 4 decades of my capitalist life contemplating the idea of something being important to the point where a monetary value cannot be placed on it. Music is worth what your last breath or last kiss on Earth is worth. Neil might have most importantly shown me that being popular or successful has drawbacks of its own as you lose a part of your life to others (Limelight). Without RUSH, I'm also not sure I would have ever thought that there are things that you can learn in life that might make continuing in it not worth bearing (Presentation/Oracle/Sililoquy) although it might be through RUSH that life actually is worth living? Anyway, I only saw them 3 times with the most memorable being seeing them at the Long Beach Arena on Valentine's Day in 1982 and then seeing them at the LA Forum 3 days later sneaking up close to the stage while they were playing Chemistry...I wore my Valentine's Day concert T-shirt out basically wearing it during wrestling practice in high school for 4 years until it, my Ozzy Diary of a Madman shirt and the shirt I got when I saw The Who play with The Clash at the LA Colliseum were basically reduced to rags. Neil Peart may not have been THE god or even A god but, he was certainly the closest thing I have had to a god in my life.

FREEWILL LYRICS: There are those who think that life Has nothing left to chance a host of holy horrors To direct our aimless dance A planet of playthings We dance on the strings Of powers we cannot perceive “The stars aren’t aligned - Or the gods are malign” Blame is better to give than receive You can choose a ready guide In some celestial voice If you choose not to decide You still have made a choice You can choose from phantom fears And kindness that can kill I will choose a path that’s clear I will choose free will. There are those who think that They were dealt a losing hand The cards were stacked against them They weren’t born in Lotus-Land. All pre-ordained A prisoner in chains A victim of venomous fate Kicked in the face You can’t pray for a place In Heaven’s unearthly estate Each of us A cell of awareness Imperfect and incomplete Genetic blends With uncertain ends On a fortune hunt That’s far too fleet…

Great to see you get back to Rush! I think you would enjoy their 80’s stuff quite a bit. Off of Signals: Subdivisions, The Weapon, The Analog Kid Off of Grace Under Pressure: Distant Early Warning, Kid Gloves, The Enemy Within, Red Sector A Off of Power Windows: The Big Money, Marathon, Manhattan Project, Mystic Rhythms Off of Hold Your Fire: Force Ten, Mission, Prime Mover, Time Stand Still 80’s Rush is so unique with their atmospheres and textures, they sound so different from their early work, yet they still sound so RUSH!

So if you want fun, check out Bob and Doug McKenzie's Take Off, with a cameo by Geddy Lee. It would be a good April Fools Day song to do. They were a Canadian comedy team on SCTV in the 80's. One was Rick Moranis of SNL and Ghostbusters. It hit the charts here and for a novelty record did really well reaching the Top 20!

Imagine listening to this band and these songs as a 14 year old. This wasn’t mindless pop, but, a message presented with deep, thought provoking, poetic lyrics carried to your ears by incredible, creative musicians. It’s astounding to think that such talented artists existed simultaneously in the 1970s and 80s, but, now there’s a void of musical creativity.

The first time I heard Rush was as an opening act for Lynyrd Skynyrd. I had never heard of them before, so we got there a little late for the concert as we were really there to see LS. As we were walking in, we heard their sound and said "Who is that?" We finally got to see the stage and saw it was only three guys and said WOW! Could not believe the sound these three guys were making. My only regret is we didn't get there sooner! Skynyrd was great by the way!

Love that you are finally getting back into Rush, Canada's hardest working band....love this one!! Ok y'all, I have to ask.....since I've been a fan and a subscriber I love that you're digging into all different genres. One I am hoping you will get back into soon is Heavy Metal, in particular the Prince Of Darkness himself OZZY OSBOURNE, I am surprised you haven't delved into the land of Ozz. You need to play something by the original madman of rock. I think you will appreciate his style very much. Try Mr. Crowley or I Don't Know, or try an Ozzy ballad like Mama I'm Coming Home....all great choices. Ozzy's original guitarist Randy Rhoads is on a different level like EVH and SRV and Jeff Healey.....a must hear.!! Peace and love to you and all the RSR family...your friendly neighbor to the north.... 🙏❤🇨🇦

Rush has the biggest cult following fan base of any rock group out there, the fans were responsible for them finally getting into the rock n roll hall of fame. Neil peart's last name is pronounced Peert even David Grohl when he did the induction of rush said it like pert as well. Alex Lifeson is the most underated guitarist there ever was! These guys are so down to earth and funny. They filmed a dinner they had together it's on youtube but it was a riot! Great reaction btw!

that was always my objective in learning YYZ on bass. Also the ridiculous lick in La Villa when I brought home my first black and white Rickenbacker 4001, a used mid 70s one, I put the case on the kitchen table and excitedly said "Mom, mom, come see!" She opened the case and said "that's just like Geddy's." Go, mom.... lol Unfortunately, that one got stolen, after I had put on a bone nut, stripped the finish off the neck and fretboard, tung oiled it and used 0000 steel wool to give it a beautiful satin finish and put on Jim Dunlop jumbo frets... :-( Now I have a '91, but I left it stock except for the Badass bridge.

So many songs for you to get to but the most important ones are the pass, subdivisions, the tress, closer to the heart and roll the bones. The past because it deals with suicide, the trees because there's so many hidden messages in there, subdivisions having to deal with teens trying to choose their path, closer to the heart because it's something you guys preach all the time, and roll the bones because it's so unexpected

You two are great! Amber, I've been watching RSR for over a year now and the musical growth you both are going through is wonderful. From hearing you say in the beginning that rock/metal was not your genre to seeing you, not only physically but emotionally, relax into the music is a beautiful sight. Many people would be rattled or anxiety driven by such hard hitting music and you both just groove to it. Thank you for taking us on your musical road trip. It would be great if you could take a day to expose us to your favorite songs from your favorite genre. Maybe give us some background as to why they are your favorites.

Rush's Geddy Lee & Alex Lifeson had been jamming together since the late 60's as teens in high school... When Rush officially became a band in the early 70's w/ original drummer John Rutsey, they began playing the clubs & bars of Toronto in 1971 (?) ... By the time they were signed to a US label in 1974, John Rutsey was out, and Neil Peart joined on drums... Rush spent years on the road, from 1974 to 1979 touring without a break, playing gigs as small as bars, to arenas for 10+K people... So, when this record was put together in 1979/ '80, Rush were veterans in the studio and on tour, and u can hear the tightness of the rhythms & music that they made together. It was no accident that they became as proficient as they had become til that point... they had their vices (alcohol, weed, etc.) but they did not lose themselves to drugs & addiction like many of their 70's peers like Kiss, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, etc. had ... And when the 80's came, Rush was inspired by the new wave music and 'adjusted' their style of music to incorporate new influences and experiment w/ new sounds that guaranteed that they would have hit records past 1980, even as numerous 70's bands failed in their transition efforts into the 80's era.

My favorite band of all time, by a long shot. No one even comes close for me. So granted, I am *extremely* biased, but how can anyone, not necessarily a Rush fan, hear that song and not just be blown away? That instrumental break alone- listen to any of the three instruments, try to focus on one, then listen to how they all come together perfectly. There is just no one like the Holy Trinity. When I saw you were doing a reaction for it, all I could think about was watching your heads explode in the middle section. Please, please, please- you all seem to appreciate Rush, so bite the bullet and give us a reaction for 2112 in all 20 minutes of its glory. Please. It is a masterpiece.

RUSH live in concert was very special. That’s really the simplest way to describe their concert. Very, very, Special. RUSH night was always very cool. Different vibe than a lot of shows. No dummies in a RUSH crowd. At least not in the 18 tours that I saw over the decades. Wait till you guys get to the Neil Frankfurt video! You will be absolutely floored! I had the pleasure of watching him do that live more than once. I remember when he started that particular format in 91? Either on Roll the Bones or Presto. I think it was Presto. Anyway, Badass! Rush is honestly an iconic band. As you peruse their catalog, which is quite lengthy, you'll discover they do in fact react to the influences of the music popular at the time. That's why they start out as strictly a hard rock act, then add more instrumentation, with keys coming to the fore in the 80's, which was what seemed most popular in rock back then. I would strongly urge you to seek out live performances of their best tunes from each era - mostly defined by the decade they were released.

Incredible song, very much a strong demonstration of their musical prowess. Geddy Lee is a high-register singer, often going into "Head Tone" highs (I believe that's the term). His timbre comes from a nasal quality, somewhat thinner than many other singers. Now, this is a young Geddy Lee, circa 1980. As you move on through the 80's and into the 90's, the quality of his voice improved a lot and became smoother, and more mid-range; his tone was more from the chest and throat, rather than head-throat, as he had been earlier. If you want to hear and excellent sample of his voice, as it matured, listen to a song from their "Hold Your Fire" album, from 1987. The Song is called "Open Secrets". It's actually a "Relationship song", from Rush! You don't hear a lot of those but this one is! It's got great dynamics and smooth changes. It's almost Jazzy! Great guitar lead and keyboards. Nice tune. Check it out!
