Love, God & Silence: The Evolution of the Films of Ingmar Bergman | Video Essay

Every filmmaker is different. Most stay fairly consistent stylistically throughout their careers, thus giving their films something unique to identify them, but great directors take style one step further, using their movies as a medium to convey their personal thoughts, values, and beliefs. One filmmaker who consistently put forth his viewpoints and thoughts through his films was the Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman.
In this video, we will examine the six films in Bergman's career in which he explores his views on God.

I started watching Bergman 8 years ago and I knew after the first few films that these are all different parts of a greater narrative that he is weaving as he himself is evolving into a wiser and somewhat more cynical man. This is a great essay on what I would like to call "the greatest of them all" filmmaker.

I think Bergman could be arguably the greatest film maker in history. On the other hand to state this is probably as absurd as saying any one film of his is his greatest. The more great films a viewer sees, I believe the more difficult it is to choose "greatest", and the more ludicrous making such choices becomes.
