In a charity shop yesterday and heard a young couple at the door have this conversation: "You wanna have a look? Pre-loved yeah?" "Yeah well, I guess love island is doing it so why not" Sounds like I'm making it up but that's genuinely how it went. I think that influence in itself might be the most valuable thing to come out of the ebay sponsorship.

This is all so dystopian it hurts. From the shopping app, surveillance element of it all, contestants wearing clothes that aren't theirs or even resemble their style, plastic surgeries as a form of preparation for the show, contestants being exploited with false promises of fame (it's the same as freelancers being told to do work for "exposure"), emotional manipulation from the producers and the writers of the show, isolation from the real world, social media aspect that didn't exist before, etc. Honestly, contestants are one step closer to Sims or Black Mirror characters.

About the Deaf contestant - I don’t have experience w this but as far as I know a lot of the Deaf community aren’t thrilled with the representation. Obviously it’s great to see, but the way it was portrayed as a success story that she didn’t need accomodations was upsetting for some people. (I don’t expect everyone to know that, just sharing what I’ve heard. Open to hear other opinions!)
@zephyr22662 жыл бұрын
Many deaf people grow up with hearing parents and never get the chance to access any accommodations, don't learn sign language, aren't part of the Deaf community and frankly, I think they should be celebrated for adapting, because it's difficult. Obviously there's systemic change needed there, hearing people should be educated, so deaf children can have the access (but that's not what reality TV is for). This also brings out anger in many of us that grew up in the Deaf Community and use a social model of disability, because a lot of us think it's inherently unfair that we're supposed to learn a language our bodies aren't made for when hearing people have absolutely fine bodies for learning sign language (unless they have other disabilities that prevent them, of course, and that's where it gets really difficult). Deafness is a spectrum, how we deal with it is very individual, there's a lot more complicated politics and history involved than a TV show could unveil... So I'd take her not as a representative of my community, but as an individual person that's on a silly dating show and happens to be deaf and dealing with it the way that works for her.
@theonlyenekoeneko2 жыл бұрын
@@zephyr2266 agree with this. She is an individual, not our whole community.
@caitlinquinn792 жыл бұрын
Definitely agree with Zephyr - we're not a monolith. I'm deaf but have a hearing family, I grew up lip reading. As an adult who's learnt lots more about the wider Deaf community, I feel upset and angry that I was deprived of that community and I feel awful about my terrible BSL and very isolated. I'm also disabled, and use the social model. Seeing deaf people on TV often makes me feel uncomfortable and sad because we're treated as an oddity and our accomodations as a privilege, or just not met.

I never watched love island, and the bit where you mention the stylist choosing all the same clothes for all of them I realized why: everyone on the show looks the same. It makes it boring to look at and almost disturbing that they’re all trying to date each other, like they’re all gonna come together in one homogeneous blob. I know a huge draw for people is how conventionally attractive and thin and spray tanned the contestants are, and I’m not hating on conventional good looks or their admirers, but I think it would be more interesting if there was some individuality, I want to see that guy’s all black fits!!
@RachelElsewhere2 жыл бұрын
I read that it was first considered because eBay noticed a spike in searches for outfits the islanders wore last year, like Millie’s marbled dress. If that’s true, that’s already great that people were searching for secondhand options of what they’ve seen on the show and hopefully this year it’ll show others what you can find on eBay. I imagine for a lot of people, it’s just not knowing how to search for what you want that puts them off at the moment.

Having watched your video, I now agree that they should be getting hazard pay, far above minimum wage. Enough that they can take some time away from working for a few months after the show, and pay privately for a therapist. £20 a week wouldn't even cover rent for where they normally live so they have somewhere to go back to when the show ends. They're effectively losing money by going on the show and taking a lot of emotional damage at the same time. It's really not a fair deal.

As far as I'm aware, "29% of greenhouse emissions come from packaging" is not accurate (though that is indeed what the source claims - maybe they formulated it wrong?). Here's a bit more info on the topic, with sources below. "Packaging emissions are actually low in comparison with the emissions associated with producing food. Actually, packaging can even help reduce food waste, which reduces emissions in other stages. However, environmental concerns regarding packaging are not necessarily well captured using emissions, as this does not reflect impacts such as marine pollution." (1) Should we avoid packaging when possible? Absolutely! However, I think it's important to note that other changes in term of what/how we eat can have a bigger impact on the environment, such as reducing food waste or cutting back on meat and other animal products. Good to know in order to wisely choose where we can/want to focus our efforts. :) Here's an overview of greenhouse gas emissions in the UK by sector in 2020: "24% were estimated to be from the transport sector, 21% from energy supply, 18% from business, 16% from the residential sector and 11% from agriculture. The other 9% was attributable to the remaining sectors (waste management, industrial processes, the public sector and the land use, land use change and forestry)." (2) Sources: (1) wrap.org.uk/resources/report/uk-food-system-ghg-emissions (2) assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1051408/2020-final-greenhouse-gas-emissions-statistical-release.pdf

at least someone is actually fact checking these claims
@editor42012 жыл бұрын
That statistic sounded very off to me as well so I'm glad someone looked into it! I've noticed that people do GHG attributions as percentages of total emissions a lot - understandably, I guess, since they're usually trying to make valid points about XYZ thing being an issue - but this leads to a lot of double-counting, so even if the individual claims aren't wrong the overall picture can get confusing. But that's sort of irrelevant as I still don't think it explains packaging accounting for 29% of emissions. Anyway, thanks again for doing the research :)

I generally avoid reality shows but I loved the various Back In Time series. I would watch the shit out of a Love Island concept if they dropped everyone in the country and made them live in the manner of a Saxon village or something. Make them have to catch/grow their own food, weave their own cloth, and sew their own clothes and just watch which contestants flounder or flourish (making a live match would be a tangential drama bonus).

With the way Love Island is funded, it has to do some things designed to encourage viewers to buy things they wouldn't otherwise buy to make it profitable for the sponsors. Given that, I think it might be good if they shifted the focus to buying a smaller number of pieces that are more expensive because they are ethically produced using natural fibres. They could give each contestant their own wardrobe of clothes chosen specifically to suit them and their style, and allow the clothes to be re-worn. That could be part of a cultural shift towards owning a smaller number of higher quality clothes.

love this! was v sceptical when I heard ebay was a sponsor and this video has reminded me of a tiktok I saw a while back. It talked about how love island couldn't become a queer show or include queerness fully because the premise and the system of the show doesn't allow it. After watching this video it's made me think that the things I would want to see change in the show - diversity (sexuality, gender, race, body etc, sustainability, ethics and wellbeing would fundamentally change the show. The way it works, the aesthetic, the structure - everything that is loved and is viewed to make the show what it is would have to change - and unfortunately make it less popular. I really hope that having eBay as a sponsor has an impact but unfortunately I still feel really sceptical.

The point about the treatment of bodies was really interesting, great angle to look at it from! I think you've hit the nail on the head - adopting a theoretically sustainable practice is just virtue signalling if it isn't accompanied by not only more expansive action but also education. I think to myself - what are the attitudes of the Love Islanders? Are they even aware of what it *theoretically* means to transition to secondhand fashion? Are they educated or aware of the impacts of fast fashion? How will this shape Love Islanders who leave and then are inevitably approached for partnerships from FF brands? I think that it is great to say 'hey we are going to try to do wardrobe a little bit more sustainably for this season', even if they outlined that it was ONLY going to be pre-loved/vintage and they would be on the watch for drop-shipping, but what does that mean if the actual contestants actually have little to no clue about the realities of the FF industry and if this doesn't shape them in the future? Thinking Molly-Mae here and how she has gone on to consolidate the PLT Empire, encourage over-consumption and then subsequent green-washing.

edit: not sure if its true for Love Island but if i remember correctly, many shows marketed as reality TV are actually scripted reality where the production team/writers decide if and when contestants are allowed to reveal what kind of information, in order to built dramatic arcs. so they are written by writers, and tho the participants are not proper actors, they dramaturgy relies on setting them up for max joy/disappointment, e.g. exploiting their emotions. but overall, not joking, i spent a year living in Cov, studying Film and TV but managed to never watch a full episode of Love Island and YET from all I could grasp from the margin, this show for me seems like an epitome of English-ness

I'm not sure if it fully applies to this season but from interviews with previous islanders I know that normally they get to bring 2 suitcases full of their own clothing and in addition to that they used to get weekly drops from I Saw It First which was the old sponsor and those drops were kind of personalized to what they might like. (I remember one of the islanders, Anna Vakili maybe, talking about how the clothes they brought in wouldn't suit her body type at all, because she was curvier than the other girls.) So they'd basically get a package with their name on it and they would just go through a bunch of clothes and pick whatever suited their style. So I imagine they're now doing something similar to that but with second hand clothing. Maybe it is making a tiny difference but I think it's mostly for the headline and a pat on the back considering absolutely everything else the show promotes. Also once they get out of the villa most of these islanders will make a living collaborating with and promoting fast fashion brands which is depressing. And a final fun fact: there was a same sex couple on the show in the 2nd season, Sophie and Katie, but I believe that's still the only instance of that happening which is, again, depressing.

love island has had a lot of criticism in the last couple of years over its glorification of fast fashion, so i think the ebay partnership is nothing more than greenwashing the show's image. however, i still think this is a good thing, because love island still holds a LOT of cultural capital. if shopping secondhand can be shown on the trendiest show on television, it could have a big impact on shoppers who would never have otherwise considered it. although i do hope that love island will improve the sustainability of more of its filming practices, so that this isnt just a greenwash.

And if there is a major tendency to desire set skinny women... what else could it be other than manipulation from mass media over the years? There is always a reason for a statistical deviation, so don't give us BS

Love this! It also reminds me of the video verilybitchie did about bisexuality and reality tv. You might like it!

Why IS Luca so pretty? I find myself strangely attracted to him. Maybe it’s something about his intense stare 😅
