Alabama was also heavily involved in the Shag/Beach Music scene in the Carolinas as well. Jay and Amber, this is a whole sub-genre you guys have slept on. You have been touching all around it with The Drifters, The Platters and a couple others but give Alabama's song "Dancing/Shaggin' on the Boulevard a listen. They are talking about hanging out at the various beach music scenes in Myrtle Beach, SC. But many other artists here like The Tams, The Embers, Chairmen of the Board, etc. The music sprung from motown/soul roots combined with a beach vibe. Also give Stagger Lee by Lloyd Price a listen - good shag song and a story song as well! Wishing you and your family well!

This song is the story for so many of our families. Poor to begin with, loosing everything, TVA creating jobs and saving families. Some of us even had family who worked on "the bomb". My Native American Grandaddy and my white Mamaw lived through the Great Depression. They picked cotton til their hands bled. The Greatest Generation taught us so much about strength and character. TVA saved the Fort Payne/North Alabama area, and the region. Now, if you want to know more about The Great Depression, check out the 1940 film "The Grapes of Wrath" based on the John Steinbeck novel of the same name. My parents grew up on Alabama farms and lived through the Great Depression. Two of my three sisters were born then. It was, indeed, extremely difficult and poverty-laden times. But it made most of the Americans of that generation great, iron-willed, tough as nails, and loaded with common sense values. Have a great day, my friend! You can draw a straight line from the jigs of traditional English folk to the reels, harmonies and hoedowns of Southern music, violin, mandolin, tambour and guitar all played in almost exactly the same way. The link is Steeleye Span 'Old Maid in the Garret' (English traditional c 1700's) from the '90's though I saw them live a dozen times way back in the 70's and 80's. Have a listen......... (PS, MAddy Prior, (Gal out front) is in her 60's here! kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGmsmXmYicuLaNE

There will never be another group like Alabama another good one is Restless Heart. If you haven't given them a shot you should listen to The Bluest Eye's in Texas their harmony is awesome.
