"Will The Circle Be Unbroken" is an old - old country gospel song. Written early 1900s and made popular by the Carter Family in the 1930s. So the Dirt Band "arrangement " might be somewhat original, but not being 'covered'

I love this song. Please listen to their recording of "Mr. Bojangles". It is their signature song. Not recorded originally by them, but arguably the best version of the song. I promise you'll love it.👍👍 Edit: If you want to hear a fantastic Country band from California, listen to anything by Highway 101. They had a female lead named Paulette Carlson, and boy could she belt them out. Somewhere Tonight, The Bed You Made For Me, Whiskey If You Were A Woman, and many more. 👍👍

One of my personal favs from NGDB Is a song called Dance Little Jean. But by far the best work they ever did was their Albums Will The Circle Be Unbroken, and Circle 2. These are true masterpieces, especially Circle 1. Guys, these albums were a collection of Bluegrass Ledgends who came together and recorded with the Dirt Band, all throughout tge album you can hear stories and conversations being held in a livingroom environment. When i say Bluegrass legends i mean people like, Johnny Cash's Mother n Law, Mother Maybelle Carter, Doc Watson, Merle Travis, Jimmy Martin, Roy Acuff, Earl Scruggs. The Circle 2 album was recorded tge same way nearly a,Decade later with some of the artists from the first one and some younger artists at the time like, John Denver, Michael Martin Murphy, Johnny and June Carter Cash, Rosanne Cash, John Prine, Emmylou Harris, Jerry,Douglas, Mark O Conner, Roy Husky Jr. Newgrass Revival, and several others.

Love the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band! In 1974, when I was 20, I was on a flight from Baltimore to San Francisco that made a stop in Denver and this group of guys got on and 2 of them sat next to me. It was the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and we talked the whole way. They were so cool! I was catching a flight from SF to Hawaii and they walked me to my connection and saw me off. Really nice guys. It's a beautiful song, and at the same time absolutely gut wrenching.

This band goes back in various lineups to the mid 60s, longer than I do. They started out as a jug band. I saw them in the late 80s, not long after this song was a big hit. They were playing my small-ish town fairgrounds, believe it or not, right after a rodeo. They were fantastic. Those guys could seriously jam on country, blues and rock. What stood out the most to me was the killer harmonica jams. It's a special memory for me cause I was with my Dad (RIP). It was a good day.

Two songs you definitely need to listen to by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is "Dance Little Jean" and "Mr Bo'Jangles". Catch the live version, really good performances.

Love this song! Had no clue the were from SoCal! They sound just like real country boys! Anyways, glad you reacted to this, and glad you liked it! Okay, I know how you guys love a song that tells a story, so I have a good recommendation for you. The song is "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro. Such a great song. Make sure to watch a lyric video so you can be sure to follow the story. I'm confident you guys will like it, just make sure to bring tissues!

Yes, this is truly the epitome of a "southern, country band"🙄🤭. It came all the way out of good ol' Long Beach, California ‼️ I remember getting drunk for the first time in my life at one of the band's early concerts in about 1967. I think it was a great concert, though I can't be sure, as my 16-year old brain couldn't recall much next day.

They were my (gateway drug) into blue grass music. It's crazy that a country band sings about the country.

I grew up a Nitty Gritty Dirt Band fan with my mama. I didnt realize this was talking about mutual pleasure. I love my fellow Dirt Heads in the chat. One of my favorite songs by them is "Home Again In My Heart"

I think you two would love Brad Paisley. Ticks is a good ole country love song. His When I get where I’m going is a must listen to plus Dolly does back up vocals. The World and I’m gonna miss her are also great choices. There are many others these are just a small few. Love and hugs to all of the Robsquad family world wide! ❤

One of my favorite country bands. You should check out their cover of Mr. Bojangles, as well as Dance Little Jean and Cadillac Ranch. Also, have a listen to Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not by Thompson Square and the lives version of Ruby by Rhiannon Giddens. Love your reactions. Blessings to you and yours.

As I replied to another comment, another great bluegrass fishin’ song is Steve Martin & The Steep Canyon Rangers’ “Yellow Backed Fly”. It’s a great story song. That group is great. And BTW, The Dirt Band *started* So Cal. But they have had lots of members. They started like 60 years ago. Many members have been through. And some have been from many other places. And they moved from So Cal and lived in Colorado for quite some time. Their cover of Steve Goodman’s “Colorado Christmas” is just beautiful and now one of my favorite Christmas songs. I just saw them live for my birthday two days ago in Stockton (Central Valley, California) at the Bob Hope Theater. They were amazing and they played “Fishin’ In The Dark” among many others. Jimmie Fadden is the guy playing harmonica on this and everything they ever did. He has been with them since the beginning and also plays drums - usually at the same time he’s playing harmonica! Here’s a link to “Yellow Backed Fly”. You will love this song. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZXcp4mYpqhnf9k

My first concert in high school on my 18th birthday, it was close by my little home town in a neighboring college town (Alva, OK). We had a good time, went with my best friend. Mr. Bojangles is one of their hits, should watch them live too, lots of fun. The next concert we wanted to go to was Janis Joplin and the Holding Company, well she died a couple of weeks before - but that concert went on and it just wasn't the same...just missed out on getting to see her.

These guys have some of the most amazing vocal harmonies and this one was billed as the "Song for the Summer" when it was released. Another of those for a different year was Alan Jackson's song "It's 5:00 Somewhere", featuring Jimmy Buffett. These were songs that became instant "hits" based on the time of year that they were released.

Somebody commented that they thought that the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band came out in the mid 70s early 80s. (That’s when they started most of their hits) but Actually their very first self titled album came out on Liberty records in March of 1967, their first hit off that album was “Buy for me the rain” 🎶🤘

You used to ask about bluegrass recommendations. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band put out one of the all time best blue grass records called Will the Circle Be Unbroken, with all the great old time country artists in Nashville (for example Earl Scruggs, Merle Travis, Mother Maybelle Carter, and Doc Watson, for starters) back in the early 70s. A must album for true blue grass fans.

The singer on this track is Jimmy Ibbotson. He is originally from Pennsylvania... but he can twang like anything. Other Nitty Gritty Dirt Band tracks you should try are: Dance Little Jean, Rippling' Waters, Long Hard Road, and their recording of the Bruce Springsteen song called Cadillac Ranch. Good stuff.
