Rick James was my man in high school. This is priceless to me. This song demands you be out on the dance floor….immediately!! This peaked at #40 on the Billboard Hot 100. How was this not a #1 hit??!!

I remember when this was released back in 1981 and it hit number 40 on the pop charts! I could not believe it! I was angry about it because it was clearly one of his best songs which deserved a top ten pop placing at least!

Actually, if you listen, this is a SOUL song. It peaked at #1 on the SOUL chart as well as #1 on the Dance (Club Play) chart. The two charts this track was designed to climb. Therefore, THIS WAS A NUMBER ONE HIT!

@@voxandlocks True, but this song was pretty mainstream to me. I was 16 or 17 when this dropped. We would go to “Teen Night” on Sunday nights to a local club, and yes the dance floor would be packed when the DJ played this song. We teenage suburban white kids sure loved it.

Rick James was a master at funk music. He was also one hell of a producer for Motown in the late 60's & 70's before he became a solo artist producing songs for the MIRACLES & SPINNERS to name a couple. Later on he went on to produce THE MARY JANE GIRLS, SMOKEY ROBINSON, EDDIE MURPHY and TEENA MARIE. He also discovered and created bands like THE MARY JANE GIRLS. The man was everywhere and did so much. Unfortunately, he got swept up in a lifestyle of hard drugs and alcohol and his life ended far too soon.

The deep voice at the end is Melvin Franklin from The Temptations. Melvin also does some backgrounds on "It Must Be Magic" by Teena Marie. Y'all might want to listen to "Standing On The Top" by The Temptations. If you do, find the longer album version, not the short music video version although the dancing in it is cool.

@@Skeezer66 Rick James songs are awesome, but he only had 2 hits I can think of. Prince was a multi-intstrumentalist, singer, dancer, composer that put out album after album of impressive music. Prince's first album came out in the late 70's as well, and each successive album was more successful than the last, until his massive hit album and movie, "Purple Rain". It is just about as perfect an album as they come. Can listen to the whole thing and every song is perfect. @@gracieb.3054 Rick James had and did much more than 2 songs, but he also did way too many drugs and had other legal and money problems. Rick had ideas of using more rock sounds that he called 'funk punk', but Prince is Prince. Great description, but instead of Lenny Kravitz, I would suggest Edwin Birdsong whose influence on Lenny Kravitz is quite apparent in ‘Rising Sign’; at least it’s apparent to me. Then I’d have to give credit to Jimi Hendrix whose influence can be heard in some of Edwin Birdsong’s music.I’m not talking about the really funky stuff like ‘Rapper Snapper Dapper’ and ‘Cola Bottle Baby’

@@williamyates694 That may all be true but, if you listen to Lenny Kravitz’s singing style, it’s identical to Edwin Birdsong’s. Someone who’d never heard of Birdsong would probably think that they were listening to Lenny Kravitz. It could be purely coincidental that he just happens to sound so much like Birdsong.

Ooh, oh and also react to "Mary Jane". This was a song he made about his "love affair" with smoking weed, LOL.

I have noticed that the baseline for this song is nearly identical to the thriller baseline. I only noticed this after playing guitar for a few years.❤

Good Afternoon. Rick James should be mentioned with Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Paul McCartney, Prince, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder and Billy Joel as some of the greatest musicians of all time.

I remember him and Prince starting their successful careers at the same time. Loved this song. Gotta plays his biggest hit "You and I" next. Yes, on the Billboard Top 100 and was bigger than Super Freak chart wise. I would be shocked if you never heard Super Freak. Thanks.😎

Rick James was 10 years older than Prince and already had a career when Prince was still a kid in Minnesota.

@@richardkint6531 In 1973, James signed with A&M Records, where his first single under the name Rick James, "My Mama", was released in 1974, becoming a club hit in Europe. He was 5 years ahead of Prince. At 18 Prince was working as a session guitarist for Minneapolis Sound 80 Studios. By 19 he had signed a contract with Warner Records. His debut album, For You, was released in April 1978. It wasn't a hit with the critics, but Prince was just getting started
