Rick James was my man in high school. This is priceless to me. This song demands you be out on the dance floor….immediately!! This peaked at #40 on the Billboard Hot 100. How was this not a #1 hit??!!

I remember when this was released back in 1981 and it hit number 40 on the pop charts! I could not believe it! I was angry about it because it was clearly one of his best songs which deserved a top ten pop placing at least!

Actually, if you listen, this is a SOUL song. It peaked at #1 on the SOUL chart as well as #1 on the Dance (Club Play) chart. The two charts this track was designed to climb. Therefore, THIS WAS A NUMBER ONE HIT!

@@voxandlocks True, but this song was pretty mainstream to me. I was 16 or 17 when this dropped. We would go to “Teen Night” on Sunday nights to a local club, and yes the dance floor would be packed when the DJ played this song. We teenage suburban white kids sure loved it.

Rick James was a master at funk music. He was also one hell of a producer for Motown in the late 60's & 70's before he became a solo artist producing songs for the MIRACLES & SPINNERS to name a couple. Later on he went on to produce THE MARY JANE GIRLS, SMOKEY ROBINSON, EDDIE MURPHY and TEENA MARIE. He also discovered and created bands like THE MARY JANE GIRLS. The man was everywhere and did so much. Unfortunately, he got swept up in a lifestyle of hard drugs and alcohol and his life ended far too soon.
