On Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Spock and Nurse Chapel's romance was never meant to survive, but Ensign Boimler surely didn't help.
Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) and Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck) appear to have recently gotten together in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, yet the musical episode "Subspace Rhapsody" marks the end of the pair's romance. The roots of their divorce were seeded a few episodes earlier, in the Lower Decks crossover episode "Those Old Scientists." Ensign Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) is perplexed by Spock's more human-like conduct when he ends himself on Captain Pike's Enterprise. He makes the mistake of discussing it with Nurse Chapel, only to discover that she is the reason Spock has been exploring his humanity.

The problem with Federation-Romulans is written all wrong. I suppose it could be explained up until SNW because no one had seen a Romulan and no one knew they were an offshoot of Vulcans. However, once that became known it makes ZERO sense for Federation ships to be commanded by a human interacting with Romulans. It would have been far better for either a Vulcan ship or a Vulcan commanding a Federation ship to be the face of all interaction with Romulans. I dont know how Romulans would react to seeing Vulcans but I would assume that they would be less hostile and less judgmental to Vulcans than they would be to humans or any other unrelated species. Romulans and Vulcans had encountered each other but never seen each other or interacted with each other beyond warning them to leave Romulan territory. However, as both the Romulans and the Federation grow, encounters will be more frequent and it only makes sense for Vulcans to take the lead with interactions along the Romulan border.

Spock is only discovering his humanity (being fully human) because he is surrounded by humans. If Spock were on Vulcan or on a Vulcan ship or anywhere surrounded by Vulcans then he would be a huge problem. The way Star Trek is written, Vulcans are fine with interacting and trading with different species but Vulcans consider them all outsiders in much the same way Asians (Japanese, Chinese, Koreans, etc) are perfectly fine interacting with the outside world but fiercely protective of the outside world changes to their core cultural values. Im sure humans and other species are welcome on Vulcan but I would think intermarriage and permanent residency would be frowned on. Personally with all the species in the Federation, its why I think Star Trek is completely wrong that the Federation and StarFleet would be located on earth. A Babylon5 style space station located in a neutral area of space would be far more likely especially since I think earth would also become fiercely protective of human culture and values. Like Vulcans they would welcome visitors but frown on intermarriage and permanent residency. Thus for Spock its not just a battle for his Vulcan half and his human half but it means that there is also a battle for what planet and which culture will he choose. There is no straddling because on Vulcan he would be expected to be Vulcan and on earth he would be expected to be human. Its only the rank, structure and rules based cross - cultural intermix of species on a Star Ship that allows Spock a place where he doesnt have to chose.

In another time, their relationship would have been fleshed out thoroughly and even if they were destined to break up, it should have been done properly. No wonder Spock embraces his Vulcan side.

I entirely agree the break-up should have occurred over the course of an entire season...with more factors such as Christine's war trauma, and her knowledge of Spock's "better" destiny absent her influence on him.

It seems like truly poor writing to spend an entire season and a half getting two characters together, showing almost nothing of their relationship and ending it in such an abrupt and unsatisfying way, especially in a way that assassinates the character of one of them (Chapel has always been deeply compassionate to Spock). Yes, I think Boimler's comments were key, but the fact that Chapel communicated them to Spock suggests better communication than we saw in the succeeding episodes. SNW writing has mostly been excellent, but they dropped the ball here, especially when there was a huge portion of views invested in this relationship. It may have to end in the future, but this was the wrong way to do it.

I did not like how the break up was handled and hope we get a proper resolution because as things stand I can't stand Chapel now. A vulcan, sure he was half, let himself be vulnerable with her, and yet she comes off as entirely self centered thanks to that musical number.

She couldn’t help it the episode explained it he also instigated it, and from boimler telling Spock’s story to her she’s not even a footstep in Spock’s life, so she decided to go with her career even tho she loves him.

Also I the boimler thing I do think is contributing to the problem not the whole problem but it’s part of the reason most definitely.

They could have fleshed out the break-up far better than they did. They truly bungled this entire character arc for both Christine and Spock. Frankly, yes...Chapel learning that Spock has a very significant and powerful destiny that DOES NOT involve her and that her relationship with Spock is altering his personality and disposition in a way that could adversely impact that destiny should be a key reason for her pursuing her own path, away from Spock. I also think they could have expanded on Christine's own war time scars as contributing to her distancing herself from Spock.

@@victorpradha9946 yeah I would like to see more of her scars(sounds weird to say it like that but I like her character arc and how they added to her character seeing as the og Star Trek kinda just made her character ditzy) but I think it will eventually come out maybe next episode or next season. I do also think the show could’ve handled it differently but also we got some really good musical numbers so it’s not that bad.

Chapel's trip to Korby got cut off by a Gorn attack and a war that never happened in TOS. We may never actually see Korby.
