What people sometimes fail to take into consideration is that Emerson knives are made in the USA and pay a livable wage to their workers. They even have an indoor gym for employees. When you buy an Emerson knife you are supporting a very good and responsible American company. Also the wave is amazing.

I think people misunderstand Emersons. To me, they are field knives, work knives. They aren't meant to be super smooth pocket candy, like most knives. They are rough and ready knives. The steel is a slightly lesser steel for easier sharpening by non-knife guys in the field; the grinds are one-sided, again for ease of sharpening in the field. The pivot can be opened with a simple coin, anytime & anywhere, and the blade removed for cleaning out the pivot area. The rest of the knife can be disassembled with a basic phillips, easily found almost anywhere in the world. The pivot isn't designed with smoothness as it's top priority, it's meant to be reliably opened when dirty and with old or no lube. They are just simple, dependable field knives made by a small American company.

Maybe you've done field stuff and I'm out of it but I have a mechanical engineering degree (with understanding that what we design and predict in a lab doesn't always apply in field) so when I think of a smooth action, I thing of two factors of why a smooth action IS a reliable action from an engineer and physics point of view: 1) It means the materials surfaces are finely polished and smooth enough that they consistently open and close the same way every time without snagging and failing when you're in a shitty situation 2) because the surfaces are finely polished and smooth, they maintain closer contact and more consistent contact, again adding to the consistent opening and closing, but also preventing any particles from getting in meaning you don't have to lube it or clean it that often. If the action isn't smooth it means that the surfaces aren't smooth and have small gaps or ridges/voids where things can get in and wear out and gunk up. I seriously can't physically (like literally based on physics and my knowledge of engineering) understand how a knife design that isn't smooth could be more reliable than a smooth one. It's the same thing with a pistol, the barrel and slide interfaces should be smooth. A gun barrel finished with a stone wash and not a smooth finish or coating would be snagging on the slide and not cycling correctly and physically I see that being true in a knife pivot and any contact point between two materials really. To be clear I'm not insulting you, but I think you may be making things up that aren't possible because you like emerson knives and there's nothing wrong with liking them. I just don't understand how a not smooth action could be viewed as reliable in any way but again maybe you've been in the field working an emerson and I'm the one missing something. Other than that and the fact that there are a lot of better steels that can be field sharpen these days just as easy as 154cm, I agree with everything else you said and I can see those working.

​@@projectblitz7290 If you're basing "smooth" on a primarily mechanical standpoint, you're correct. But humans have various perceptions of term smooth. For example, I prefer a hydraulic feeling action and consider this smooth, while others want the knife to literally drop to the closed position with gravity. Both are smooth feeling operations in hand. But one is mechanically smoother, if that makes sense.

All I'm saying is everything about Emerson's design is fine but I'm truly struggling to understand why anyone would think smoothness is an indicator of unreliability. And for these mechanical and physical reasons of reliability, I'm not sure why Emerson doesn't use Phosphorous bronze washers over his nylon/Teflon or whatever washers. My only conclusion is that it's not economical to polish the washers/liners/blades to get that good mating surface but he doesn't want to do what pretty much what most other brands do and ship em out unpolished for the customers to break in because short term an unpolished bronze washer setup could be grittier but smoother after the surfaces break in and mate. And because phosphorous bronze is harder, it should prevent crud from getting in vs nylon/teflon and be more reliable long term, short term during the break in it might not be as reliable if the surfaces aren't flat.

@@projectblitz7290 He uses Teflon because that material will naturally work debris out of the pivot much better than bronze and you don't need to grease them. A thin film will form from use and it will become smooth. It's smooth enough for the "Wave" feature to work flawlessly every time. Also, bronze doesn't do so well in salt water. And Bronze needs grease/oil which means debris tends to stick to grease/oil. The CQC-6 was designed for a navy seal team. They actually contacted him in the 90's to design a knife for them and they had certain requirements. It's a lot of the reason his knives are built the way they are.

They are folding fighting knives, they do not need super steels or locks that can get gummed up. They are designed for the singular purpose of defending your life. For the intended purpose, they work to the highest tier on the market. Don't buy one if you only carry just one EDC pocket knife. Use it as part of a system for which it was designed. If you use your defensive knife for opening boxes, when you need it, it will not be as sharp as you want no matter what steel you have. The wave deploys faster than even the best auto knives, the edge geometry leaves nasty wound channel cuts, the lock is simple and reliable. There will always be higher grades of steel and new lock designs coming out. But I for one am glad to see a company that understands what it does well, and one that stays with that.

The grind is for solders in the field. Single sided (chisel/V-grind) make it so you can sharpen it on a Rock, Cinder Block, car window quickly in the field.

I have done a video addressing the issues with Emerson folders. Emerson is still making the same knife they did in 1999/2000. What was cutting edge in 1999/2000 is not cutting edge in 2019. In fact Emerson's build type is actively avoided in 2019 due to known issues with wear. No other makers continue to make Ti linerlocks. Ti linerlocks are among the worst wearing locks available. Emerson is way behind the curve on materials, features, quality, etc. In fact, a $50.00 Chinese made Bestech is a better knife than any Emerson folder.

The reason Emerson knives have a chisel grind is for soldiers out in the field who don't carry sharpening stones with them and only have access to just a rock and they only have to worry about sharpening one edge and not both edges and dealing with angles and shit like that.

The ZT 0630 is an Emerson collaboration with ZT knives that has a "normal" edge bevel with a frame lock. A great alternative but in S35VN steel.

You completely missed the point of the Ti liner lock; the lock stick is a feature, not a bug. A steel on steel liner lock can easily disengage when bumped; Emerson's will not. By the way, Spyderco has a Ti on Steel linerlock on their K2 for the same reason.

My first Emerson was a Super CQC-8. Carry it on my left (weak) side so I can pull it out without opening it "Wave-style." Love the hell out of this knife. Perfect blade shape for me (thrusts and slashes equally well), great handle ergos, and very pointed pommel (for "less than lethal" blunt impact applications). Such an awesome, old school, "built like a tank" folder.

The edge is like that so it's thinner behind the edge. This will make it bite into and slide Through material easier. By you going back and making it a V you'll make it not cut as good 100%.

Great review! I have 3 Emersons. The sheepdog flipper, which I love, and 2 of the new Appalachians. The sheepdog is smooth as silk and the Appalachians both have terrible blade stick, to the point of needing a screwdriver to push against the lock bar to release it! Should I send these back to Emerson or keep on breaking them in? Thanks!

I have 2 emersons, an original cqc-7 ,and a cqc-7 mini with the wave. I regularly carry the mini ,the handle fits my hand perfectly and the g-10 gives me a great grip. I like the chisel grind tanto for what I use the knife for .It makes a great scraper , light pry bar and opening bags of construction materials ( sand ,concrete etc.) and cutting heavy plastic strapping. It is an excellent tool . For light duty tasks and food prep,( cutting apples for lunch etc) . I use my swiss army knife.After over a year of heavy use/ abuse The lockup on the knife became loose and sloppy,I shipped it to Emerson, Got it back a week later , Lockup was perfect,blade resharpened and came with a note thanking me for being a customer all at no charge! Emerson is a great company that stands behind their product.

Aside from the comments posted on forums ( by people who now actually own and post pics of their cold steel knives, after swearing that they'd NEVER own one lol!), Is there any actual proof of stolen design? Unfortunately, there IS actual proof of Emerson stealing Fred perrin's la griffe, then eventually paying royalties after being confronted about it. People use other people's designs. Sometimes it's public, sometimes it's not. There are only a few legit NEW designs in the history of knives, so everyone has stolen from everyone else! To blindly accuse someone of theft online, or to hate on any brand based upon accusations of theft of a design that isn't even yours sounds stupid. Cold steel, Kershaw, zt, and tons of others make way better knives than Emerson. If you like it, buy it. If not, why troll someone with a contrary opinion? It's your $, spend it how you want.

I have been carrying a cqc 7bw for about ten years now. It has the best balance between strength, capabilities, ergonomics and carriability. The sticky ti liner is also a plus for me as it adds just a little extra reassurance to the lock. That been said, I never recommend an Emerson to any new collector. The value is undeniably low for your average people. I also have the Endeavor, which is like a medium size cqc 10, one of the few Emerson knives with thumb hole. It's more suitable for edc and deep cutting. If you want something similar, keep you eyes out for the waved honey badger knives from South Africa. If you check their website, they do offer off hand pocket clip screw holes-for a $25 fee. That really grinds my gears sometimes.

As far as the crunch when unlocking the knife to be closed. Take a pencil. And when the knife is closed. Put a thick layer on the blade lock face. Put on a layer. Use the knife and repeat several times. The crunch will go away and it will be smooooooth

I think Emersons grow on a person. I don't believe they are a good beginner knife. But, after messing with hundreds of different knives for 65 years, the brand is about my favorite, cuz it's a known quantity, generally easy to work on, and to maintain. In a pinch, I grab one of my Emersons, generally my A100 or CQC7. Just like I would grab, say, a really good brand of 1911 .45 acp pistol.

I love my Emerson mini cqc-7. But when I first received it, the action was by far the worst knife I'd ever experienced. It was so gritty I could literally barely open the thing. Had to take it apart and clean so much metal shavings and dirt out it was unreal. Cleaned it, lubed it, put it back together and lucky it worked fine then. Just could not believe the lack of care put into a almost $200 knife. Would never by another one, but mine works well now and I do like it.

I have a CQC-7B, Mini Commander, and a CQC-10. There just something about the feel of an Emmerson, you either get it or you don't. I recently picked up a Pro-Tech version. If you think that auto Kershaw is good, the Pro-Tech is on another level.

I have some older models without the wave, just the thumb disk, and the profile is visually cleaner. That said the advantage of the Wave prong is the ability to open without loosening grip on the sides of the handles; you still have to pinch grip, but it's more secure than taking your thumb off (disk opening) or using your index finger on a flipper. But you have to insert the Wave back into the pocket to open, if you simply swipe down against the lip of the pocket the blade doesn't clear properly.

Also why do you think that everybody uses they steal lock bar insert on their titanium frame locks and liner locks? Well because titanium is soft and wears what's faster than steel ever would plus with titanium u get lock bar stick... Just a bad situation with Emerson.

I keep 8 Emersons strictly as fighting knives which is where they shine for me. I don’t leave the house without my flipper karambit. Having said that, I will concede that they are probably an acquired taste. If they fit your lifestyle and fighting system then they are a good way to go. I like Hinderer for utility work 🤷‍♂️

Really nice fair review!!! For your second Emerson, may i highly highly highly suggest the tiger?! Ive owned and reviewed quite a number of emersons, and the tiger still remains my favorite. Its basically the iconic cqc8 blade, but lower slung, more in line with the knuckles, with the cqc13 handle, making for excellent retention in hand, and a very utilitarian blade for everything from food prep to camp tasks, or even combat. Only other model that comes close IMO is the commander, but that recurve, while sexy and effective, is maybe just a bit more of a task to sharpen. Anyways, thx! Great review!

For me, the break in wasn’t too bad... once I start using them they break in. When the knife comes, the lockup is really tight and the action is a bit gritty, but this is so the knife wears well and breaks in. After a few months the lockup is very nice.. super strong, but a lot easier to open. The action really smooths out, as well. Don’t take it apart and lube it, imo. Break it in thru using it, not thru opening and closing it.

Emerson’s are for the people that need or want the capabilities that the knives have. If you’re not interested, or not excited by the knives or the designs, and the fact they are made in the USA, I would skip out and maybe try a kershaw Emerson.

I know this is a older vid but go watch super steel steves vids on hard use knives. He couldent break the emersons folders and its made him a believer. He broke a strider smf doing the same tests. The steel is exactly what it is intended for. Also the washers are nyletron and should never be oiled. The oil makes the lock stick even more. They always have a little stick but oil makes it worse. These knives were not really intended for edc unless you dont mind a crude folder. They are weapons. Make no bones about it cause ernie doesant. Its like trying to use a delica as a demolition tool. Just wont be great. Same thing here. You cant test these blades as edc blades for which they are unintended. I love emersons but when i need a edc blade to slice, i dont reach for an Emerson. That being said, when i cant carry a handgun, i carry a emerson most of the time.

5 years later... I have a fix for your lock-stick. Take a pencil and with the knife closed, colour in the locking surface on the blade. Repeat until your lock-stick goes away. You're welcome.

Little late to this video but it need to be said those kershaw emersons are in no way stronger than the standard emersons. Watch super steel steves video on a head to head on these two knives.

I had received a Emerson as a gift (glad it was a gift) and I had to return it bcuz of QC issues and I swear they returned it in Worse condition! So I bought a Kershaw cqc-7 but when I tried to switch the clip for a lefty the screw holes are way too big, what's up with that? #mailbag as of now have you seen/used anything New for a good cross over edc/outdoors folder or are you waiting to do a best of 2019 video? Not an Emerson fan. Can't stand the chisel grind on any blade and even past that the rough assembly just doesn't fit the price. It should be a lot less expensive for what you get.

Single edge lazy grind, bad locking mechanism not stable lock, can't survive splitting wood for fire making, poor fit and finish, overpriced with cheapest steel.. Made in China made we knives or any brand 10x better than this one.. Never ever buy this knife for sure..

You aren't too good at that one handed close huh. That's Probly how you cut yourself Probly why you have such an issue closing it in general. This review makes me question your reviews of other knives that I have less experience with. The materials aren't what makes these knives what they are. Think you really dropped the ball here .if you like it or don't whatever but your comparisons and usage make it seem like you don't get why people Like and buy these. You might as well compare a balisong to a traditional folder and say that the folder is a better knife for the money because its the same steel but less money. To be fair the fixed blades you've recommended that I've purchased are great.
