@gears5336, that's what I think. Between his performance here and his maniacal acting in "It's a Mad Mad World" I've often wondered why he never became a major star. I guess he was successful in Las Vegas, but he wasn't prominent in many movies. When he's in his room with a girl dancing in their bathing suits while Ethel Merman is calling him on the phone, he asks the girl, "Do you hear bells baby?" I start to lose it every time. Ethel Merman wants him to go over to the park with the big W and find the $300K, but he won't stop to listen. Crying and yelling, "I'm coming to save you mama" at 100 mph suits him better.

I cannot agree with you more. I was an usher on the Westend premiere of the new musical (2005) in London and Nathan lane and Mathew Broderick played the leads, and Mel brooks came in and brought bagels for everyone in the theatre lol and whilst it was out of this world perfection!!!...hitler in the play was played by the gay director rather than this Charlse Manson hippy (who was written out of the script). strangely conlith hill (the British version of the gay producer) managed to be equally ridiculous as a gay director as well as hitler - not small shoes to fill.

The new film with Broderick had a few good scenes and moments. Tiring at times. Keep it Gay was a laugh riot. And Will Ferrell doing the replacement for this scene was actually entertaining, a nice break from his overacting.

This is the best scene in “the Producers”. Dick Shawn is absolutely hilarious as “LSD”. I love the part at the end of the song,where he collapses on the floor,peels a banana,tosses the fruit aside then hugs the peel while sucking his thumb. Too bad he never really became a major star. He only had the starring role in one film. “The Wizard of Baghdad” in 1960.

This is the most 60s song ever, captures the self indulgent bullshit of the flower power movement. Just love how he caresses the flowers. If we followed the trajectory of LSD's later life he would have been into disco in the 70s and doing fitness videos in the 80s.
