This movie seems to be a 2018 John Hughes movie. Idyllic, upper-middle class, teen romcom. The 80's vibe of the soundtrack just completes the throwback. And who doesn't love John Hughes!

I saw it and very much enjoyed it all. Simon's two scenes with each parent was crazy emotional. And his journey via the emails and figuring out who Blue was so endearing. When he sent that one email and it was rejected because account was closed. I felt for him. Blue was Simon's shoulder to lean on and walk through this new acceptance chapter for Simon's life. And Simon was the same for Blue. I thought the ending was nice. And to reveal who Blue was and they both could final exhale. And how things went after that was right on. So many aspects to this movie can be related by so many that just want to live their lives as to who they are. I think Nick did a pretty amazing job at relating to those emotions and struggles of that journey. The anticipation..the anxiety...the emotional and the moments of being hurt and hurting those around you. But Simon writing the post on that site and just laying it all out there. Was well done and well written.

This movie is amazing!! I LOVED IT!! Yes, I'm a gay guy and as a gay guy I can say there has never been a movie that has more accurately conveyed what it's like to be a closeted gay kid in high school. It's also incredibly refreshing to see a sweet, funny movie about a good, gay protagonist with a cheerful ending - finally! This movie is important, special, and very relatable. Sure, it's a little cheesy but it's a romcom - that's expected. Love, Simon is not perfect, but it's damn close.

Great Review, as always. I loved Simon. * caution: spoilers* I have seen the movie 4 times, so far. The audience reactions are a big part of the enjoyment of the film. I must say, I like the way the movie ends very much. It could have ended at the ferris wheel, but instead we get to see a glimpse at life after the two meet. When 5 coffees come out the drive through window it just makes you all warm and fuzzy inside and that intensifies when Leah gets in the back seat and makes room for Blue to sit up front and Simon kisses him good morning when he gets in. It ties it all up in a beautiful, happy bow. Keep up the great work, looking forward to your next post.

Thanks for your review, i'll try it! Gay love stories are often my favourites as well. I wonder if this is because straight ones are too cliché, too sexist...I don't know, it bugs me.
@AJ-cq5pw6 жыл бұрын
SandKeats Can you elaborate when you say too sexist?
@SandKeats6 жыл бұрын
Ah, I guess that would be a long answer. Well let me see... There is the problem of every gender being in the same role over and over again. You already know, when you see a love story between to straight people, who is going to kiss the other one first, who is going to make the big declaration, who will be afraid of losing her virginity, who will be passive, who will offer some flowers, who may cry, who will make the other one laugh, who will protect the other one, who will spend an hour in the bathroom trying to be pretty... There is no surprise, and I don't see myself in those patterns. I'm a woman and I want to make big love declarations and ask someone on a date, and I need a man who will find it normal, you know? Then there is the problem of the female character nobody can identify with. That character is often very flat; it needs to have a profound humanity, some flaws, to be something other than ridiculously pretty. I rarely see myself in those romantic stories. Also, the man needs more vulnerability. And finally, there is the problem of possible abuse, or any form of violence towards women. Before I can immerse myself in a straight love story, a have to be sure that the man is feminist enough, that he will respect his partner and treat her as an equal. And I'm not saying that abuse doesn't exist in gay relationships, but it's not so systematic. So I have to look for any sign of dominance, of authority, of violence, I have to check all the time. It is so not romantic haha. So yes it's annoying. I still have my favourites straight love stories though! But it's hard to find a good one, even though there are plenty of them.

I think the scene where the friends go sour makes total sense. Because I think the movie is trying to show that even though straight people can be good and kind allies they’re never going to understand the fear of being outed even if people are generally accepting. I think it was an important twist on a typical teen movie moment. Also the movie almost got some tears out of me (I’ve never cried at any movie) but maybe it’s more affecting of you’re part of the LGBT community. Good review though!
@jacksonpoole136 жыл бұрын
agreed. As an LGBT person myself, this movie made me cry like five different times in one viewing. It felt so real for me at times. And that twist I agree was really important to show.
@abushenob3 жыл бұрын
The friends going sour had nothing to do with Simon being gay. It was because of how he treated them. Nick liked Abby as much as Simon liked Blue, but Simon told Nick that Abby was taken, knowing that it was not true. Simon told Leah that Nick was interested in her which set up both of them for humiliation - in fact, this is the sort of trick that the mean kids play on someone in movies about bullying or "mean girls". Simon threw Abby under the bus by setting her up with Martin, whom she disliked, to save his own ass. Once they understood what he was going through they forgave him. For his friends, it was never about Nick being gay. I have seen many comments in many places saying that Simon's friends were bad friends. It was Simon who was the bad friend; his friends only reacted to how he treated them
@pauldelgadillo18276 жыл бұрын
The friends turning against friends in the third act doesn't really happen in the book Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda. It was contrived to isolate the guy for dramatic effect but, the set up of the movie with Leigha being in love with Simon is also a change in the plotline. Leigha also lives in an apartment, like Abby and her mother is a single legal secretary who works in nearby Atlanta. For a movie that is set in Georgia, there weren't any y'alls or folks with southern accents.

I dont think you got the ending then.... His main fear was everthing changing, and by the end of the movie it comes full circle with his life exactly the same, only he is truly happy and himself.

This, for me, is a spot on review. The movie did exactly what you said at the beginning. Accessibility. For me, as someone who relates to Simon's character well, the movie lacked depth in terms of the emotions experienced and expressed on screen. I kept feeling as if they only touched the surface of fear, depression, anger, suicidal ideation, timidness, etc...that couples coming out. I definitely enjoyed the film and there were several moments that i connected to - mostly out of a desire to have had the same experience (specifically re: the mom and her reaction) - but I often consciously noted how surface-level-only the film was able to arrive at regarding it's portrayal of the character's experience. Love your reviews!

Love, Simon is not the first studio film directed by Greg Berlanti. Berlanti directed "The Broken Hearts Club : A Romantic Comedy" in the year 2000. Love, Simon is now avaiable on Amazon streaming. I purchased the film in early April and I watched it twice yesterday. All in all a good film but I find that the antagonist Martin, didn't get enough punishment for what he did. The goon sin the school cafeteria weren't as hurtful to Simon as Martin was. The movie has Martin sort of redeeming himself by purchasing another ride on the ferris wheel when, in the book, none of Simon's friends nor Simon speak to Martin outside of anything having to do with the school drama club. What Martin did was cyberbullying and the school sponsored the website. I know Fox was going for the teenage dollar but by making it Simon's senior year and not his junior year, like in the book, the studio shot itself in teh foot. On April 24th, the long awaited sequel to Simon vs The Homo Sapieans Agenda came out. "Leah on the Offbeat was an immediate best seller and I read the book. Simon and Bram come out as the most adorable couple at Creekwood high in Leah's book.

05Sun08OlympiaLuna As a gay man, you should definitely make it a priority to see this in theaters. If films like this don't receive the support of it's target demographic, studios won't care about producing them. Hmm. I want to be exicted for this, but the trailer makes me cringe. I'll probably wait until it's on Netflix or something. It's still amazing to see stuff like this happening, but it's kind of been spoiled for me by seeing SKAM season 3: 4 hours worth of a Norwegian TV show that looks and feels like an indie movie and somehow managed to be the single best gay coming out and coming of age story I've seen on screen. It's so beautifully written and shot, it's such a shame so few people outside of Scandinavia will get the chance to see it.

Loved the movie, hated the review. Nah, it was a decent review. The power of this movie is that people have needed this story for decades. Everyone who has been pushed out of the closet, or who has come out in some way, can pretty much recite certain scenes from the heart. It may sound dramatic, but I do believe this movie will bring families together, and will give some people in the LGBT community the validity they have sought.

@AJ-cq5pw6 жыл бұрын
K Smith why did you almost walk out? That movie was amazing
@k1988smith6 жыл бұрын
Aliyah Jordan I found the movie incredibly boring and I didn't connect with the characters at all! I didn't like how the movie would fade to black and a new stage of life would start for the characters. I found the time jumps to be jarring, not to mention confusing. I felt completely unclear on all the storylines too, I'm getting angry just typing about it. Many things happened off screen, it made me think of that whole show don't tell rule - it was broken! Last but not least, the movie boast the exploration of sexuality but it's only mentioned in like two scenes EPIC FAIL on that front for me. These are just a few of the reasons I didn't like Moonlight and wanted to walk out. However, I appreciate people enjoyed it so we can continue making strides in diversity for our entertainment. I'm really passionate about my hate for that movie. Thank you if you read the entire comment!

K Smith Well movies like that aren't for everyone. I love movies like that where you kind of have to figure out the message. It was really expressing how hard it is for black gay men and that's why I thought it was really good.
@k1988smith6 жыл бұрын
Aliyah Jordan That's another reason I didn't like the movie. I didn't feel Black's struggle at all not one bit. I can't think of any movies with black men but the movies "Freier Fall", "Being 17" one of the characters is half black I guess, and "Die Mitte Der Welt" are wonderful movies that explore the struggles of navigating human sexuality. They're also all not English films but so worth a watch.
