Considering that `Love Spreads` is basically a hard rock track, it shows you how Reni could never lose his groove. Strangely, `Sally Cinnemon` is my favourite Reni piece. Man, that dude could make anything swing. Worship him....he is a musical God.

What is it with You tubers talking shite? No one has ever under rated any of these guys except maybe pre solo career, Ian Brown would have been considered the weak link (obviously he put Squire in a headlock with their respective solo work) and that was simply a reflection of his awful live vocal performances (thankfully he figured out how to mask his voices failings from his home recordings and becoming a little clever how to put subtle effects on his voice) he was always respected lyrically and he was cool as fuck.

I do love the slide guitar, but the drum groove is what snagged me and made me buy the record when it came out. As a wannabe drummer, I tried but could only manage a very squared off version. I could never emulate that cool laid back pulse . So glad to hear this isolated recording and finally realize all the important snare ghost notes. I like the full song but I am perfectly entertained by this isolated track.

The song is a standard blues 12 bar with iffy singing. Then he gets on the kit and propels it into the stratosphere. I like this version more than the other one with instruments and vocals. Masterclass.

Nah, can't agree to that......when they reformed he turned into a total cheeseball, overplaying and showing off for the plebs in the crowd. Same as John Squire really.......they were hamming it up and being really corny, like a bunch of old farts that apparently forgot they used to be the coolest band in the world. Squire's live version of Fool's Gold was such a disappointment......all those cheesy Beatles and Chic riffs, and Reni with his constant fills and flams, god it was all so naff!

Love Reni as a drummer His style is 2nd to none. Gave the Roses something extra, but as a band you can’t have one without the others. Mani, squire, brown and Reni made the band what they were.

I would say he is underrated by the general public. If you go around asking people to name some of the greatest drummers of all time, you most likely wouldn’t hear one person say Reni even if you did it all day. Now drummers and musicians’ musicians who are in the know, they know where it’s at.

Reni doesn't appear in most of these best drummer polls and isn't featured much in drummers magazines etc. I'd say Reni is underrated, best indie drummer by far and one of the best groove drummers of all time.

Chris Scott I agree, but 'indie' is a bit of a narrow term. I'd say just rock music in general - the entire history going back to the 60's. What would be his competition if you were just talking about indie? Most drummers you would class as being indie would be very conventional and lacking funk. Reni grew up in pub bands playing in all different styles. He was actually a big heavy metal fan before he joined the Roses, the only one of the four who was.

I have to play this for my 8 year old son. He's all into John Maher (Buzzcocks) who is fantastic, definitely. But he doesn't get Reni because he doesn't play "fast enough." This should show him "fast" doesn't always equal "good". Reni's just pure class....

The reason that no "best drummer" exists is that we all develop a varying sense of pocket based on our musical backgrounds, and the interpretations of each drummer are valuable as they are unique and cannot be found anywhere else. THAT is what the purpose of percussion is and THAT is why percussionists exist.

@blurry67 You are right. It is not as cut and dried as some of us fans presume it is. Even after all this time we still feel sad at the lost opportunities of what might have been, I guess. History has pointed the finger of blame at Squire and, the likes of myself, have been happy to go along with that. In the end, everybody lost. You fools we cry! I miss Reni the most and still cling to the hope he might drum again one day, somewhere.

According to John Robb's book about the Roses, in the early days when they were just gigging around Manchester, way before they signed to a label, people who knew of them would mention them as that band with the really good drummer.

I was there.. It's true, I spent more of the time mesmerised, transfixed by the amazing grooves Reni poured out.. He was using a super basic kit at the time too mostly working over the bass/snare/hh/ride.. but it sounded expansive because of his musicianship..

The greats are those who have gained a vast understanding of "pocket". I see pocket as the collection of ideas that will complement a given piece. To be a pocket drummer is to be a drummer who can improvise around the given musical boundaries (pocket) of a piece while accessorizing the piece with individualized nuances and a unique sound.

@jakeenan The end of the Stone Roses was a sad event not just for fans, but for music too. They were the greatest band to come out of Britain since the Beatles, IMO and they could have gone far. Unfortunately they threw it all away. But maybe their greatness remains intact this way. They didn't have time to burn out and become predictible like so many other bands have done. Shame it should end on a bitter note, but I don't point the finger at any specific individual. All 4 had a part in it.
