This song is pretty straight forward. It's about someone who feels trapped and manipulated in a Sanitarium (Nut House) to the point where they want to snap and fight back.

I've always thought the entire album was about power. Master is about the power drugs have over you. The Thing That Should Not Be is about the powerful Old Ones. Sanitarium is about institutional power. Disposable Heroes is about the power the generals have over their soldiers. Leper Messiah is about holding power over others through religion. And the titles of Battery and Damage Inc. speak for themselves. I might be splitting hairs though since control would require power.

but a sanitarium is not a nut house. a sanitarium is where people go to get well from their illnesses. they could have some mental but not crazy mental. people can leave at their own free will from a sanitarium. . a sanitarium is an establishment for the medical treatment of people who are convalescing or have a chronic illness
@tob.meister3 жыл бұрын
@@itstheotherwhitemeat Did I say it was a "nut house"? No. I could visit my mother's place of work freely, my sister has many times. The people won't kill you on sight, a lot of them are schizophrenic and drug addicts, and can act like "normal people". As I said; my mother works at one, so I'm fully aware of what it is. In Denmark we have two places for people with schizophrenia, my mother's place of work, which deals with drug addiction, mild schizophrenia and mental disorders and then there's a place that deals with severe schizophrenia and mental disorders. Explanation from Metallica Wiki page: a man who is trapped in a "sanitarium", which in this song is described as a mental asylum. He dreams of breaking free, and later in the song, there seems to be a mutiny of some sort in which the people trapped in the sanitarium rebel against the officials of the sanitarium, and James says he has "got some death to do" and that it "seems the only way of breaking free", probably implying that he is likely to kill the officials and break free

BradandLex, It's couched in those terms so we can relate to it better. By seeing how it relates to military vets we can safely empathize with them. But the more we are able to relate the true meaning back to ourselves the more we see that, to some extent, we are all living in a self-imposed sanitarium of striving to reconcile actual, objective sanity with functional, subjective sanity and living with the choices and bargains we make.

All my best to you both🤘 As far as the ‘Metallica’ name is concerned, Lars (drummer) was chatting to his friend, back at the dawn of the 80’s, who was a magazine editor. The editor was putting together a monthly magazine dedicated to rock/metal music. The only thing he was missing was a title. He asked Lars what he thought about naming the magazine Metallica. To which Lars replied, ‘terrible name! It’ll never take off’. Then proceeded to steal the name for his new band. And the rest is history ☺️
