I took my father to see them for their 50th anniversary tour. They are his favorite band and he hadn't seen them live in 37 years. After the show he looked me dead in the eye and said "They still got it....their music will last another 50 years"

The Pete Townsend windmill is one of the most iconic moves in rock history. I've never seen Roger Daltry hit himself with the microphone. Keith moon wore the headphones to hear the backing keyboard tracks to keep in time. The tape was to keep them from falling off.

it wasn't really taped to his head, he formed a "cage" using a tape band in the front and in the back that held the phones in place better. you can see because there's different scenes where they're not laying the same way.

You want an on stage crazy story from the Who were somebody got hurt? The video is on KZbin---> Keith Moon was already in the habit of placing an explosive charge in one his two bass drums to detonate during Pete Townshend’s guitar-smashing at the end of each Who performance. But for their Smothers Brothers appearance, Moon packed several times the normal amount of explosives into his drum kit, and when he set it off, a gigantic explosion rocked the set as a cloud of white smoke engulfed Townshend and singer Roger Daltrey. Though bassist John Entwistle never lost his cool, Daltrey practically flew downstage and when Townshend emerged from the smoke, his hair was almost literally blown to one side of his head. Though the incredible explosion has been rumored to have caused Pete Townshend’s eventual near-deafness, credit for that should probably go instead to the Who’s pioneering use of stacked Marshall amplifiers as a means of achieving maximum volume during their live performances.

Daltrey has stated in the past that the microphone swinging started because he was basically bored and needed something to do on stage. It rather happened by accident and evolved from there. There have been a few mishaps along the way, including the mic hitting the floor with a discernible "Thud"...but that's Rock & Roll for ya!

Pete has an amazing voice, and he wrote 95% of the bands songs, and after getting them to a certain level, he would present them to the group and let each member play it how they saw fit. So if you ever get to listen to any demos from Pete, most of the songs are totally different than what you get on the final versions. It's really wild to hear how they were written Vs. what each member brought to the table in the end, most songs take on an entirely different meaning when presented this way. But that was a part of the genius of The Who, and why they are one of rocks best bands of all time.

Keith had to wear headphones for two songs, this one and Won't Get Fooled Again, because both those songs are played along to a tape recording of the synthesizer part. Keith couldn't go off time to that or it would ruin the song so he had to listen quite closely to it. The duct tape kept them on with his manic style and head flailing around. At the end of Won't Get Fooled Again he'd tear them off because he hated wearing them.

Lovely to see your reaction and smile. "Baba O'Riley" was to be part of a Rock Opera that was never finished. It was used as the theme song for the TV show CSI New York. One of my top favorites was another song from that unfinished Rock Opera ... " Behind Blue Eyes" ... "Tommy"... is the name of the Rock Opera that they finished and was turned into a movie with some of the biggest stars of the day. Songs that hit the top of the charts were .... "Pinball Wizard"... "See Me Feel Me". ... [ "Go To The Mirror"...includes See Me Feel Me. ] Elton John did Pinball Wizard for the movie.

If there’s one band that makes me wish I was born 15 years earlier, The Who is it. But even amongst my generation, that of X, these songs spoke to us, notably this one. How that band managed to coalesce all those personalities, talent and egos into a band that didn’t end up killing each other is still frickin’ amazing. Wood, Entwistle, Daltrey and Townsend, I mean, come on, that’s just insane. This will always be one of my favorite songs to play live, my inner 16 year old rock-star-wannabe can’t be held in. Is there a reason for the Townsend windmill? Hell no, but it’s just damn cool and lets the guitar know you’re here and mean business.

I remember listening to The Who with my uncle when I was about 12 or 13. He jumped down his basement steps while doing the Pete Townsend windmill move and broke his ankle. We laughed about that for years. RIP Uncle Mike.

Their record Tommy was one of the first 5 albums I bought, about 40 years ago. I didn't know what it was about. I just love the music. Pinball Wizard was a song I've loved since I was in the back seat of my mom's brown Chevelle, and it was on the radio.

Townshend didn't invent the windmill motion on the guitar (he saw Keith Richards messing around with it) but that's like saying Eddie van Halen didn't invent finger-tapping. Still became the most iconic user of the technique. Daltry has never smoked himself with the mic as far as I know but Townshend did screw up his hand on the whammy bar once with the aforementioned windmill (still completed the show) You've reacted to Rush so it's worth pointing out that while many drummers today having Neil Peart as their favourite drummer, Keith Moon was the favourite of Peart

Yes Keith Moon has his headphones taped on so he won't lose them when he is going nuts on the drums. Pete Townsend does do several songs as lead vocalist, in fact he went on and had a successful solo career. Rodger Daltry has always swung his mic but never heard of any mishaps. I used to photograph this band live and he never lost control of that mic. If you notice it is taped up really good with the mic chord doubled up or wrapped on the mic body undr the tape so it won't damage the mic itself or anyone else if it flies off. John Entwhisle is essentially a "lead" bass guitarist. He not only sets the rhythm and bottom tones but also uses melody to drive the songs with his brilliant skills.

No microphone incidents that I'm aware of - other than the Abbie Hoffman incident at Woodstock in 1969, but Pete (the guitarist) did impale his hand on his whammie bar (he was playing a strat, if I recall correctly) while doing a reverse windmill during the 1993 tour (I think it was '93, but I can't remember). The bar when right through the palm of his hand, and luckily enough caused no long-term nerve damage. They finished the tour, to my knowledge, as well.

Bassist John Entwistle is considered the best bassist in contemporary music, and was the calm eye of that storm. Keith Moon drums, the head phones are so he can hear the sound mix better, as for the duct tape he probably broke them so they’ll stay on ,he was a crazy person who played lead drums basically , Pete Townshed is a very talented guitarist & composer, and Roger Daltrey’s singing speaks for itself

They were huge in their time. In 1979, 11 people died at The Who concert in Cincinnati Ohio. It was so crowded, and people got trampled by the crowds of people trying to get into the building. It was tragic. My step dad was there, but he would never talk about it. I guess it freaked him out. They were definitely one of the greats in their day, and still are today. One of my fave classic rock bands.

The guitarist is the legendary Pete Townsend, the vocalist is Roger Daltry, the bass player is the late John Entwistle, and the drummer is the supernatural (late) Keith "the Loon" Moon. I'm going to beg of you to listen to the studio version of the first track of their epic rock opera, "Tommy". The "Overture" is an instrumental preview of all the musical themes they play throughout this opera, and EPIC, BRILLIANT, and MIND BLOWING barely describe that experience. No lyrics to interpret, just next level musicianship! This was great fun, thank you as always. 😂👏🌹😇

fun note about this song, since you've listened to a bunch of Pearl Jam - i don't know if they still do it, but there was a time where, at their live shows, Pearl Jam would do a cover of this song. the one time i went to go see them, they broke out this song, and turned on ALL of the flood lights (outdoor venue) so the whole crowd was lit up, and we all sang along together. it was magical.

In an interview, Keith Moon (drummer) said that he would turn his symbols up-side down and when people threw food at the stage, Roger's spinning microphone was slice it up and Keith could have a nice salad.

Funny you should ask if Roger Daltrey has ever accidentally hit himself while swinging the microphone. As far as I know, that has not happened, or if it did, it didn't result in a serious enough injury for him to even mention it. But...a very bad injury did happen to Pete Townshend (the guitarist). In August of 1989, when he was doing his famous windmill, he actually impaled his hand on the tremolo or whammy bar. The Who was playing "Won't Get Fooled Again" at the Tacoma Dome, in Tacoma, Washington when the tremolo bar pierced the webbing between the fourth and fifth fingers on his right hand. That was the last song before the encores, which Townshend missed, as he was rushed off to a hospital. I saw them a week or so later at the Los Angeles Coliseum and his hand was heavily bandaged, but he did perform.

Roger Daltrey has told stories about how he honed the microphone swinging to use as a weapon against rowdies on the front few rows. He reckoned he had no problem in bouncing it off peoples heads or noses.
