I didn’t think that tour would get to my town. Roger Daltry suffered severe health problems that pushed it back for months but they finally came, just one year after the original planned date. What a great show it was.

The Pete Townsend windmill is one of the most iconic moves in rock history. I've never seen Roger Daltry hit himself with the microphone. Keith moon wore the headphones to hear the backing keyboard tracks to keep in time. The tape was to keep them from falling off.

You want an on stage crazy story from the Who were somebody got hurt? The video is on KZbin---> Keith Moon was already in the habit of placing an explosive charge in one his two bass drums to detonate during Pete Townshend’s guitar-smashing at the end of each Who performance. But for their Smothers Brothers appearance, Moon packed several times the normal amount of explosives into his drum kit, and when he set it off, a gigantic explosion rocked the set as a cloud of white smoke engulfed Townshend and singer Roger Daltrey. Though bassist John Entwistle never lost his cool, Daltrey practically flew downstage and when Townshend emerged from the smoke, his hair was almost literally blown to one side of his head. Though the incredible explosion has been rumored to have caused Pete Townshend’s eventual near-deafness, credit for that should probably go instead to the Who’s pioneering use of stacked Marshall amplifiers as a means of achieving maximum volume during their live performances.

Pete has an amazing voice, and he wrote 95% of the bands songs, and after getting them to a certain level, he would present them to the group and let each member play it how they saw fit. So if you ever get to listen to any demos from Pete, most of the songs are totally different than what you get on the final versions. It's really wild to hear how they were written Vs. what each member brought to the table in the end, most songs take on an entirely different meaning when presented this way. But that was a part of the genius of The Who, and why they are one of rocks best bands of all time.

Keith had to wear headphones for two songs, this one and Won't Get Fooled Again, because both those songs are played along to a tape recording of the synthesizer part. Keith couldn't go off time to that or it would ruin the song so he had to listen quite closely to it. The duct tape kept them on with his manic style and head flailing around. At the end of Won't Get Fooled Again he'd tear them off because he hated wearing them.

Daltrey has stated in the past that the microphone swinging started because he was basically bored and needed something to do on stage. It rather happened by accident and evolved from there. There have been a few mishaps along the way, including the mic hitting the floor with a discernible "Thud"...but that's Rock & Roll for ya!

Townshend didn't invent the windmill motion on the guitar (he saw Keith Richards messing around with it) but that's like saying Eddie van Halen didn't invent finger-tapping. Still became the most iconic user of the technique. Daltry has never smoked himself with the mic as far as I know but Townshend did screw up his hand on the whammy bar once with the aforementioned windmill (still completed the show) You've reacted to Rush so it's worth pointing out that while many drummers today having Neil Peart as their favourite drummer, Keith Moon was the favourite of Peart

Lovely to see your reaction and smile. "Baba O'Riley" was to be part of a Rock Opera that was never finished. It was used as the theme song for the TV show CSI New York. One of my top favorites was another song from that unfinished Rock Opera ... " Behind Blue Eyes" ... "Tommy"... is the name of the Rock Opera that they finished and was turned into a movie with some of the biggest stars of the day. Songs that hit the top of the charts were .... "Pinball Wizard"... "See Me Feel Me". ... [ "Go To The Mirror"...includes See Me Feel Me. ] Elton John did Pinball Wizard for the movie.

I heartily recommend "Love Reign O'er Me" as your next song by "The Who." Roger's Daltrey's vocals on that song are as good as it gets in rock music. You can find some good live performances, but it's best to do the studio version.

No microphone incidents that I'm aware of - other than the Abbie Hoffman incident at Woodstock in 1969, but Pete (the guitarist) did impale his hand on his whammie bar (he was playing a strat, if I recall correctly) while doing a reverse windmill during the 1993 tour (I think it was '93, but I can't remember). The bar when right through the palm of his hand, and luckily enough caused no long-term nerve damage. They finished the tour, to my knowledge, as well.

Aileen - you might have this from earlier comments (TLDR). The Who:Roger Daltry (vocals), Pete Townsend (guitar / keyboard), John Entwistle (Bass), Keith Moon (drums) and later Kenny Jones on drums were part of the English invasion of the mid 60's (Beatles=good boys, Rolling Stones=bad boys, Kinks=poetic lyricists, Zombies=sex perverts, The Who= underground rebels). Entwistle - who had a piece of Nazi shrapnel in his head lodged during his birth (in a Blitzkrieg / London) - revolutionized the instrument (you can see RHCP's Flea wearing a skeleton outfit popularized by Entwistle). Moon provided the name of Led Zeppelin, and Townsend created the "Rock Opera" with Tommy (Ann Margaret, Jack Nicholson, Eric Clapton, etc...). They had been known to set off explosives on stage, to attack people on stage, set shit on fire, etc... . Zeppelin manager Peter Grant (former pro wrestler) lamented that he was thankful that "at least I'm not managing The Who". I would recommend "Who are you", "See me Feel me", and the biography "Full Moon". If you have time - the biopic "Thunderfingers". Time well spent. Love your reactions!

Bassist John Entwistle is considered the best bassist in contemporary music, and was the calm eye of that storm. Keith Moon drums, the head phones are so he can hear the sound mix better, as for the duct tape he probably broke them so they’ll stay on ,he was a crazy person who played lead drums basically , Pete Townshed is a very talented guitarist & composer, and Roger Daltrey’s singing speaks for itself

Their record Tommy was one of the first 5 albums I bought, about 40 years ago. I didn't know what it was about. I just love the music. Pinball Wizard was a song I've loved since I was in the back seat of my mom's brown Chevelle, and it was on the radio.

If there’s one band that makes me wish I was born 15 years earlier, The Who is it. But even amongst my generation, that of X, these songs spoke to us, notably this one. How that band managed to coalesce all those personalities, talent and egos into a band that didn’t end up killing each other is still frickin’ amazing. Wood, Entwistle, Daltrey and Townsend, I mean, come on, that’s just insane. This will always be one of my favorite songs to play live, my inner 16 year old rock-star-wannabe can’t be held in. Is there a reason for the Townsend windmill? Hell no, but it’s just damn cool and lets the guitar know you’re here and mean business.

I'm going to beg of you to listen to the studio version of the first track of their epic rock opera, "Tommy". The "Overture" is an instrumental preview of all the musical themes they play throughout this opera, and EPIC, BRILLIANT, and MIND BLOWING barely describe that experience. I remember listening to The Who with my uncle when I was about 12 or 13. He jumped down his basement steps while doing the Pete Townsend windmill move and broke his ankle. We laughed about that for years. RIP Uncle Mike.

They were huge in their time. In 1979, 11 people died at The Who concert in Cincinnati Ohio. It was so crowded, and people got trampled by the crowds of people trying to get into the building. It was tragic. My step dad was there, but he would never talk about it. I guess it freaked him out. They were definitely one of the greats in their day, and still are today. One of my fave classic rock bands.

When I saw them in Edmonton Canada years ago, Roger threw the microphone out into the audience stepped on the cord jerking the microphone back to him but it was a bit too high and sailed behind the amps and someone back stage threw it back out seconds later where Roger caught it and sang right on queue. Absolutely amazing.
