Sewing can be great but also daunting!
In this sewing vlog I am sewing the Aura Dress by Papercut Patterns and talking to you about why you should still choose to have a go at sewing even when you’re scared of getting it wrong.
🌸 You can subscribe here: bit.ly/3e9EP9g
And you can follow me on Instagram here / alexandra__burnett
Perfectionism in sewing is a dangerous mentality that will only leave you paralysed and will stop you from picking up a sewing project.
I am changing the way I am sewing and I encourage you to do that same.
Instead of focusing on the end result, focus on the beauty of sewing, the journey, the craft itself, and leave the end result alone, because by trying and doing your best, you will grow in your sewing skills and you will learn more than if you were stuck, frozen, by the fear of messing up.
How many of us have stashes of fabric and patterns that are untouched because we can’t get ourselves to pick something and just have a go?
My sewing videos have hopefully proved to you that messing up is an integral part of sewing. And it happens to the best of us.
But it’s better to get it wrong, to have some sewing fails, pick yourself back up, and learn a ton in the process, rather than be stuck in a vicious cycle of not wanting to give it a go, because of fear of ruining patterns and fabric.
Aside from the talk, I will show you the process of sewing a beautiful wrap dress, The Aura Dress by Papercut Patterns.
I sewed the pattern in size 3, and the fabric is a light weight viscose that I bought from an Instagram seller.
For this project I used a sewing machine, scissors, rotary cutter, cutting matt, clipping shears, seam ripper, iron, pins and interfacing.
Everything is filmed and edited by myself.
Hope you enjoy this Sewing Vlog❣️

@@AlexandraBurnett WoW!!! You are too beautiful.. whomever see you should believe that God is true and real.. and whenever I see you I feel like Iam in a dream.. And when we wake up we will all realize that all this life was nothing but a dream and that only God is whats true and real.. ❤🌷😘 Even if let say I never seen your lovely beautiful radiant cute baby face nor touched you in any place nor smelled and kissed your wonderful neck and breast.. nor heard your lovely soft warm voice you still know that you exist, & Its true that we dont see God but we all know that God exists There was a teacher who did not believe in the existence of God, he said to his students, do you see God? the students answered no we don't see God, so the teacher said if you don't see God it means there is no God. then a smart student stood up and said to the other students hey guys can you see the teachers brain? then the student answered no we don't see the teachers brain, the student then said the teacher is crazy he has no brain :0) the universe science says was not always there it had a beginning point the big bang meaning it was begun initiated in other words created, thus there should be a creator, there must be a God, we don"t see God and we don"t know the essence of God thats a different story, But we see how things in the universe obey rules and we see some wisdom in things indicating he is knowledgeable and wise, and we see different things many verity of things and creatures and that indicates the capability of God, and we also see that all things are made of almost the same thing for example everything is made-up of particles and energy and space or vacuum, meaning they share a similarity some how indicating unity Which proves that the creator of all things is one One God for all of us And God is the creator of space and time and time and space came together they were created together Meaning that God is not found within the space time dimension And is greater than to be contained within space and time frame and borders, also whatever was proven to exist-the universe proves the existence of God- but was not proven by scientific facts and evidence-&not by logic alone-to not have had a beginning point it means that there is a possibility that That thing may have existed all the time and was not begun or created and thus has no creator,, the universe proves the existence of God but God not proven by scientific evidence & not logic alone that he had a beginning point, so God may have existed all the time, yes God existed all the time if God proven to exist but had no beginning point also that means he has no creator. God initiated everything and he repeats things too, and thats clear we see many cycles of things, water cycle, animal and plants food chain cycle, God created this life and it is only a temporary sample or an example of a coming everlasting one which could be either in heaven paradise or in hell. If we try to be good humans in life and try to obey God and his messengers and those whom rightly represent them, then we will go to heaven/paradise, if not we will go to hell fire and burn in it forever.

You’re so right. You can’t learn without allowing yourself to make mistakes. I get precious about my fabrics and buy less expensive ones to experiment on but then still don’t get on with it. It’s a theme that runs through other parts of my life. Fear of getting it wrong, but I’m learning to let go of perfectionism.

Dear Alexandra, I have turned 70 this past year and I get perfectionism. But I'm finally over it. I cut out a shirt but I realised ( to late) no instructions. It was a thrifted pattern. So I ended up not sewing in front yokes but I realized I just needed to take things out and redo. I can fix this. I did ,and so glad. Shirt is beautiful. Thank u Alexandra for your inspiration.

Beautiful dress. Such a triumph. My motto is always “ I’ll give it a go” . I became a bit obsessed that you didn’t eat all the biscuits. You changed your clothes and there was still one malted milk biscuit in that little bowl on the table. I really wanted that biscuit. X

Yes, to you motto! and yes to your incredible attention to detail. It was so sunny in that corner that my wool wrap cardigan was a bit much. I went upstairs and the only thing I liked was that dress and so I put it on, and completely forgot about the biscuit haha! I get like that with sewing sometimes. Hyper - focus! But anyways, I am rambling, you can 100% have the biscuit!

I laughed and can completely empathize with @6:19 "...then that's just anxiety" 😆 My new motto with my sewing the year: if it fails this is an exercise in learning how to be good at being bad at something. I think the older I get the less comfortable I am being "bad" at something because a) perfectionism and b) I am out of practice! So now I am actively trying to be more comfortable being not perfect at things 🙂

I love this reminder so much! Here's to trusting that whatever we make out of our fabric is their best use. It's beautiful to think of our fabrics as a precious ressource - but not so precious that we are too afraid to make something with it. Let's let our fabrics live their best lives (outside the fabric stash!) - they want to roam around and see the world with us! Much love to you, Alexandra!

So I had been watching all the big CosTubers for a long time now and somehow I got it in my head that if I don't meticulously hand sew all of my hems or daft a corset pattern from extant garments or be as close to historically accurate as possible or use expensive fabric made of natural fibers then it isn't worth making. I got into a huge sewing slump because I was overthinking all the details to try and be like them. But this year I say screw it! lol I am currently making my Renaissance Faire outfit completely by machine because I am going this weekend haha and it is coming out so well! I haven't sewn in so long that I forgot how far my skills in sewing have come! I appreciate this video and the message of just going for it. Mistakes made are great lessons and can teach you more than doing everything perfectly

I appreciate your video. My husband died almost 9 years ago and I have not sewn since then. I recently pulled out my sewing machine and serger and have started with very basic easy projects, such as burp cloths for gifts, feminine pads etc. I have bought some lovely linen and some patterns and I am trying to determine what to begin with and to get over my fear of sewing clothes. I am “plus” size so it’s even scarier to find patterns that fit. I like your philosophy of “just try” and don’t worry about making mistakes. Everything is progress. I even joined a “sewing box of the month club to also get my juices, flowing and watching lots of videos. I am really enjoying yours. Thank you!❤ PS the dress turned out fabulous and you have such a perfect figure for it. Beautiful work beautiful color beautiful you 🌺

This is such a wonderful video! New to your channel, I have been thinking about learning a hobby like maybe sewing so that is how I found your channel. Love this style of video with uplifting and supportive words! Would love a video discussing how you schedule sewing. I seen some people schedule life and hobbies different ways For example, some use theme days like Saturday- chores and Friday- self-care and Wednesday- work on hobbies. I also seen people divide the day into three or four time blocks like morning, afternoon, evening, and night. Some use a daily planner/list and others just a weekly list or a weekly list with categories. JashiiCorrin on her channel has ideas like a self-care bingo. Maybe some people only need a monthly calendar. There is also the pomodoro timer method. What do you think of these different methods like theme days, daily or weekly lists, hourly schedules, routines, bingo, pomodoro timer or just a calendar? Thanks!

Such a lovely comment! I currently don't have a sewing schedule. I just squeeze sewing in. When I can or I make time for it, in and around life and work. I am not so organised with my life, yet, so I wish I could reply with a fancy organised plan, but at the moment, it's very much about seizing the moment for me, as a working mom, who runs a KZbin channel, and has not just one hobby, but many, and also aims to have a social life, and stay healthy! haha! I am the same as you. I have so many patterns I have collected but I was paralyzed to start any just because I was afraid to do something wrong. I started as well by sewing a vest. I just thought if something is not as perfect, I learn from it. I was intimidated about not understanding where all the pieces belong. But I won’t give up and go on . Just want to thank you for your video because everything you said I was going through as well. You gave me the feeling of being understood and not being the only one who encountered those problems. Your dress is really beautiful. Sending you a big Hugh😃

So much to say about this video. First thing I'd like to say is OH MY GOODNESS ALEX YOUR DREDS TURNED OUT SO BEAUTIFULLY ❤️ What master piece. Secondly wow. You are such an inspiration. You are so right. What's the use in having all the patterns and all the fabric and just telling yourself you can't use them incase you don't get it right. Better to try and fail than to never try at all 🤯 I need to take a leaf out of that book for sure. You also made me laugh when you felt like you weren't sure what was going on with that long strip and you were tying it round yourself saying you knew something was up with it. Then as you said later... Trust your gut. I love your content always but I'm really loving these videos lately. I'm learning about sewing but also about the bigger picture of pushing one's self out of their comfort zone. Thank you for all the lessons ❤❤❤ Oh and I absolutely loved watching you look so pleased with what you'd made 😭 honestly made me a bit emotional. You queen. You looked blooming gorgeous ❤

From a faithful viewer like yourself, the comment about this video, means SO SO SO MUCH!!!!! Thank you for being such an encourager!!!! I feel like sewing is a metaphor for life, so I feel like it's cool to talk about sewing things that apply to so much more than sewing - that part excites me a lot!!! I must admit, I think I also looked blooming gorgeous hahaha! Sending love Demi! All the love!

The way I was so stressed for *nothing* during the whole video because rayon triggers my perfectionism nerve like nothing else and I make sure to stabilize it and not stretch out the pieces as I go I handle everything with such precaution with a knot in my stomach and it takes me forever when working with it and I was like nooo don't put this piece around your neck it will lose its shape!! but your end result showed me how wrong my anxiety is because that dress looks so so nice and it fits you so well and I was so happy for you because that's a big sewing win indeed and those feel so good! Also I wanna say that your sewing vlogs are one of my fav thing on youtube these days, they're so calm and reassuring and I love following you along your journey on your projects it's so cosy

I learned a lot from my mistakes😂, when studying design and textile arts...I really really learned from mistakes and that brought me the security that as bad the sewing or printing situation gets, it finally will turm out great. So, don't fear! Another tip: as I am refashioning as well- cutting clothes you don't like anymore can help to overcome the fear of cutting fresh fabric😅 and it may turn great as well...
