A good agent:
-negotiates a better fee for your performance that you could have on your own
-works on your behalf and has your best interest at heart
-knows how to effectively communicate with you, and the venue
-gives you all the details necessary for you to prepare for a great performance (may include things like sound gear, audience demographic, wardrobe, hours, location, etc…)
-is transparent about what the fee is, how commission is paid, and all other relevant paperwork
.
I’ve used 15% as an example - this can vary from 5% to 20% depending on the situation, and how much work the agent is doing on your behalf (there can sometimes be a blur between the agent’s and manager’s role early on in your career).

With 'One Minute Tips For Singers' I offer practical music business and performance advice for singers in one minute or less. I’ve been singing for a living for 30 years - everything from rock bands to mounting theatre productions on cruise ships, to singing in royal palaces and headlining international jazz festivals with my own music. I’ve learned a lot from putting my own bands together and touring around the world, and now I'm sharing little gems of useful information I've learned along the way.
