Whenever I hear GnR, I think of the first time I heard them. I had just moved to LA in 1987 and was living with my cousin, an assistant music engineer. One day, he came home and played a song he had been working on at the studio and wanted to know what I thought. It was “Sweet Child O’ Mine.” I knew it wasn’t just another song-it was unlike anything else I had heard. Not long after that, it was all over the radio, and everyone knew who they were.
@stevehamilton88245 ай бұрын
APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION was a game changer for music in the 80's rolling into the 90's. We had all been glammed up and hair metaled to a point where the whole genre was watered down by commercialized bands created by the record industry. While the hair metal genre still had quality artists playing, there were so many bands that were just being shoved in our face to make money for the industry because they had "The look" but couldn't not cut it musically. This happens in most genre's of music. The comes GnR. Holy crap! Unlike anything we had heard or seen. Blowing are minds and ears with this incredible, genuine music. This album was released in 1987 and set the tone for what people wanted their rock music to look and sound like and it influenced a lot of veteran hair bands to follow. Many lost the glam style, wrote heavier songs and took off the makeup. They saw the writing on the wall. It was about the music and that had to be what was important. The Appetite album is iconic. Every song is incredible and the band just flipped the middle finger to the establishment and did it their way.

Great song off of Use Your Illusion 2. Civil War is another good one. If the original video gets blocked then you could try reacting to maybe a lyric video or something along those lines. I've heard that trick works. Some of Dave Matthews Band stuff gets blocked but it isn't the band that does it. I know they don't care if people react or listen. He actually wrote a song called "#41" about the issues he was having with his record label and the control they want and have.

Axl Rose was a big fan of Nazareth. Manny Charlton was asked to produce Appetite for Destruction. He did most of the work (25 songs) and left, leaving another producer to finish. I remember he said they scene was too much for him and he just wanted to get back to Nazareth. haha. Apparently the reissue of AFD has Manny's work as bonus tracks. I haven't heard them personally tho.
@martinwhite35595 ай бұрын
If you want Guns N Roses most epic song then try Estranged. It is part of a Ballard trillogy. Dont Cry, November Rain and Estranged in this order. They tell a story of love, heart break and grief. If you have not done You Could be Mine then it is a must. The main song to Terminator 2. Civil War is their most emotional song lyricaly. Comma is other epic song. Might be their hardest hitting song. They did not have a long period with their original line up. Duff and Slash have rejoined in the last 8 years but Axel is nothing like he was in the 80s and early 90s. Axel wanted to be as big as the beatles but Slash and others just wanted to do hard rock like their first album. This creative difference is a problem for a lot of bands but this along with drugs and alcohol played apart in many original members leaving the band in the 90s. Axel never stoped but they have never been the same. Kurt Cobain was also influenced by the beatles but he never wanted to be as big as them. 2 of my fav bands that are still important today but fame, fortune and drugs got the better of them all. That is why bands like The Rolling Stones are so legendary. They had such a long career despite all of this. When I was a teen my dream was to be a rock star but as I got older I realised that it was not an easy lifestyle. So many temptations and pressures. You can't stay at the top forever and the fall can be very tough. I would just like to experience what it would be like to be a big rock star just for one day. Slash (GnR and Velvert Revolver), Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters and Nirvana) and Chris Cornell (Soundgarden and Audioslave) are my musical idols. Each one of them have had a difficult Career. Slash lost band members to drugs, Dave has also lost band members to drugs and mental issues and Chris is no longer with us due to drugs and mental issues but they all made fantastic music that will last forever.

Have you not done "Civil War" and "You Could Be Mine" yet? Those are ICONIC. (I thought you had done them, and perhaps they've been taken down. But if not, those are absolute *MUSTS* .) Beyond that, "Mr. Brownstone" and "Pretty Tied Up" should definitely be hit, and if you want to dive into a deeper cut, "14 Years" has always been a favorite. (It features one of Jay's favorite instruments, hint, hint…) This is fine stuff. The only reason it isn't one of my top reccs is because they're too much competition. Was just checking out your vid for Paradise City by these guys: there you were saying that in the 80s everybody must have wanted to be a rocker. That reminded me that one of the coolest things about then was that everybody got a look in: we all wanted to be a rocker OR an athlete (Carl Lewis, Flojo, Michael Jordan, Hulk Hogan, Joe Montana etc etc) OR a rapper (Beastie Boys etc) Or a movie star...a bitof a free for all. Even being a karate black belt was great, or having a cool muscle car. The only thing that it wasn't great to be was a nerd. Ah well, the nerds are getting theirs now haha. Great times. My favourite gunner is Duff McKagan the bass player too, if we're talking favourites. They don't make 'em cooler than that dude.
