My brother suffers from schizophrenia and he lived on the streets until we got him treatment. He told us that he was completely content living on the streets and that he had street friends that felt the same. He was angry with us for getting him treatment but now he is living on his own and taking care of our elderly parents. Behind every homeless person there is a story. We have to remember that he or she is someone's son or daughter but there is no cookie cutter solution for the homeless. Each case must be handled differently and the person treated with respect, something society in many cases is not willing to do. It is a shame that Mr. Latt was gunned down after dedicating time to helping the homeless and was killed by a person that he was trying to help.

So sad I lost all my childhood items and many valuable collections. The last time I gave money to a homeless man to go see his dying son I saw him in the Fred Meyer (store) buying a half case of high end beer with the money I gave him. I will never help a homeless person again with shelter or cash. I will give blankets, coats and take food to them. But from everything I have read approximately 80 percent are on drugs or alcohol and many are there by choice.

Homeless people are homeless for a reason. I was homeless for a time. I was also a drug addict and thief. I wouldn't allow me at my worst to stay with me in my own home now. The people who are actually normal people down on their luck generally stay on someone's couch or in a shelter for a few weeks while they get on their feet. They change their clothes and bathe and you won't be able to spot them anyway. Visibly homeless people are different. You can talk to them or hand them a dollar if you use your discretion, but don't trust them, and accept your money is very likely going straight to keeping them out of drug withdrawal. Nonetheless, be weary.
