Her writing "Yours is one of the nicest that I got" reminds me of two women I was "friends" with around this time (1989-2002). Both were born the same year as Rebecca Schaeffer, and I'm a year younger than Bardo. Those girls were very friendly on the surface but not likeable underneath that, but unlike Bardot, I was aware of that (somewhat at least). Females my age are nowhere near as polite on the surface, and I think that attracted Bardo to her - it was unusual for the women his own age he interacted with. But it's a mere surface-level protocol that has no substance underneath it - in fact they are more likely to be hostile towards non-mainstream ethnicities because in their era, those people had no societal power or status.

We don't even know if there was a second time. No one witnessed the encounter except Bardo and Rebecca. He claims that he visited her apartment twice that morning but it seems more likely that he just visited the one time and Rebecca opened the outer door and he grabbed her arm and shot her in the chest. He probably lied about going to the apartment twice. Apparently he had a photo he said he wanted her to sign in a bag and the gun hidden beneath it. Rebecca may have tried to close the door but he grabbed a hold of her and shot her before she could.
