The atonement in the doctrine of limited atonement in reform theology, I believe is understood as everything that is needed for God to receive a sinner and this includes negatively removal of the guilt of sin, and positively a righteous position fulfilling the requirement or duty of righteousness toward God.

Almighty God and Jesus Christ align themselves in our lives as good shepherds. This is more important than we think. Our Deity liken their followers as sheep and the laws of the healthy flock are applied to our lives...along with the highest science the universe offers. As the leaders of their flocks they are the Alpha Males. If we don't choose to be a part of that flock other, pretend alpha males will take over, using oppression, aggression, argument, distress, and worse, because they have no real interest in their horde...only a desire to make money out of them and use them for all the unpleasant tasks. That science, called Righteousness, carries all Jesus' promises for us...and 144000 instructors, in waiting, to guide us into that science.

The word limited refers to the scope of God saving work in terms of its actual application, that this work is intended to a selected group. This is a uncomfortable concept for a humanistic believer, but if they expand the scope to unlimited, then they must admit the degree of the work of God is limited, that God requires something else besides his work towards sinners, otherwise all sinners having received this work of grace they should all be accepted. There is nothing else required for their acceptance by God.
