I like that because it gives me an idea of his struggles and what hes gone through to make it to the top. In some ways it inspires me because once you find out what hes gone through and how much pain he carried and how much he suffered to get where he is now you come to the realization that just he is a regular human being at the end if the day and worked really hard to be successful and that gives me the idea that I can too achieve my dreams as long as I work hard enough. In sone ways he gives me hope to have a brighter future

"shadow" has to do with the Carl Jung personality theory, that is a part of us we repress or aren't conscious exists because we don't accept them or think people won't accept. So, the one saying "I want everyhting, I want power etc" is Yoongi's shadow that, in the MV, takes over him completely.

@@mev9752 The shadows literally represent the repressed aspects of our psyche that we don't want to identify with, but are there nonetheless. That could be fear and insecurities, but it could also be desires and aggression.

The walls seems to be inspired by an art installation by Anish Kapoor named Svayambh or “self-made” “O!RU82?” Is the name of the intro of that album yoongi sampled, the same way namjoon sampled intro: skool luv affair for his solo “persona” I guess you are kind of right? Shadow in Jung’s psyche are parts of yourself that are kept hidden. Yoongi has been vocal about his struggles and mental health during the years. I feel like this song is a really good way of explaining shadow using Jung’s psyche from his perspective and experience. (The album map of the soul used Carl Jung’s theory of the psyche to explain their experiences. Each of the rappers made a song of each section: persona, shadow, ego. The lyrics are related to those themes. Originally there were 3 albums but they made shadow and ego into one so if you read lyrics and pay attention to the songs you can tell how the album themes change while listening.) Yoongi has more solo songs but not all of them have music videos, you would be reacting to his sound and lyrics which I’m sure many would appreciate as well if you want to react to them :) Pd: i love the landscape in the background 💜

the wax in the door right at the beginning: it is most likely an inspiration drawn from a British Indian sculptor Anish Kapoor‘s installation art called “Svayambh” - which in Sanskrit means “self-made” or “auto-generated”. like you're molding yourself due the necessity to "walk through those doors" ; "you'll change because life will get in the way"... and of course by doing that you'll leave some part of you behind I'm not getting in details, but it's that.

The tape on his shoulder with a big Y: In small print, it says YD250. It's a reference to the shoulder injury he got from a crash while riding his Yamaha YD250 motorcycle. It happened back when he was still a trainee and had a part-time job making pizza deliveries. It caused him pain and mobility problems all these years until the pandemic gave him the then opportunity to had surgery. Thanks for another great video!!!

Yeah, just to give more backstory for others- he was working as a bike delivery boy while training for BTS because he left home at age 17 (his parents didn't support his career aspirations) to move to Seoul and be a songwriter/producer, and he supported himself (there was a video where he talked about having to choose between $2 jangjangmyeon for dinner or taking the bus home). On his bike he was hit by a car and dragged a little just before they debuted their first group performance. He didn't even tell the company about his injury because he was worried he might get kicked out (?) and has had shoulder issues ever since. Like you said he finally had shoulder surgery during the Pandemic downtime!

The more you listen to their music and finding out, not only the translations but also the meaning, you’ll find that the language difference is irrelevant to an extent. Of course they also inspire us to learn the language which ARMYs have learned to different levels, but when you listen to their music you get familiar with the words. It is said that there’s no language that can fully translate Korean words to the exact meaning so it’s down to interpretations, that’s why it you look up the lyrics of the same song from different sources they differ in some ways.

the song indeed touches on some personal topics: Suga struggled with depression (before and early after debut) and social anxiety. He received professional treatment for both. This is yet anothet song that highlights his experiences with his mental health mixing with something as big as fame. Very intresting. I think the video showed that too. Love your reactions btw! (You dont have to react to this on your channel, but if youre intrested in his story i recommend you listen to his solo song "The Last" in your free time. He pretty much explains everything there 💜)

the order for map of the soul era: intro: persona interlude: shadow outro: ego
@rubabraja9207
@rubabraja9207 3 жыл бұрын
So this song is from Map of The South :7. Bts had 2 map of the soul albums bith were inspired by Carl Jung's theory on The Map of the soul. Where Carl Jung divided the soul into 3 oarts. Persona (rms solo is on that(, shadow (yoongis solo) and ego (jhopes solo is on that one).. Persona is part of ourselves that we want others to see. The good part, the part we pretend to be and w8shed we were all the time, and in a way the aprt that we look up to Shadow is the opposite the part we hate and hide, that we looked down on and dont want the world to see, the fear the mistakes etc also the unconscious darkness And Ego is our consciousness of ourselves and who we are. Shadow here is mainly about how it is so hard to handle fame. Bts have talked ALOT about how they felt scared and confused because nobody has had the achievements they have so they dont have anyone to ask advise from , they feel lonely here not sure how to process this all. And being on that "high" to speak they realize that the shadow also grows bigger. Because they have more money more fame its easy to go down the bad path. The lust, the greed etc is stronger. Not to mention it is stressful ti be a celebrity. These are the part of fame that nobody talks about . Them coming from a small olace thinking once they are successful it would be a life of party only to realize that they have new demons and problems.

You bring up a delicate point. There is a lot of amazing English language music. Non-English speakers must make the leap, or lose the experience. We can do the same - or miss out. There are subtitles. It is like learning to distinguish them from each other, and taking the trouble to learn their names. It is a matter of respect.

3:34 - Something that I recently just noticed is the way in which the camera changes position depending on what Suga is talking about. When he says "flying high is terrifying" the camera goes up and looks down, showing us what Suga sees as he "flies high". And when he says "no one told me how lonely it is up here", the camera goes down and looks up to Suga from a low angle, emphasizing that he is in this elevated position and that he is alone in that position.

Shadows in the sense of Carl Jung, which map of the soul 7 is inspired by. It means the shadow is part of you. You can only move forward once you realise that and make peace with it. Fighting your shadow or dark side will make you stagnant. And whatever that shadow is, is just individual.

The shadow's are the parts of himself that he represses because they are the parts of him that he doesn't like or doesn't want to look at. The message is no matter how much he tries to ignore them, they will continue to keep coming up to the surface until he accepts them as part of himself. The concept is based on the Map of the Soul by Carl Jung. The second part where it gets really intense and gritty is his shadow self saying you cannot ignore me because you are me and I am you. I think that is the point at which he accepts his shadow self and he is now complete or he can now move forward in his growth. "Jung came up with this term “shadow”-it’s original with him and is an image intended to refer to the parts of the personality of which we are not aware, that are behind our backs, so to speak. The shadow exists at the fringe of consciousness and is difficult to detect directly. You might also think of the shadow as the sum total of motivations, thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that one would not be proud of or for which one wouldn’t want to accept responsibility. It is the part of the personality that normally one will not or cannot acknowledge. The shadow is mostly shaped by a person’s subjective sense of the social world around them." by Murray Stein.

You can definitely sing along to korean songs. It just takes a bit to get used to the sounds. You'll pick up the words eventually, even if you don't know what they're saying. A lot of people look up the words romanized to help them learn. If you can sing along to the macarena or despacito, you can sing along to korean songs after time if you really want to.

those words (or word) on the green grid at the start of the video references an old album from the start of their career O!RUL8,2? the first lyrics also reference suga’s words in ‘no more dream’, but can also be seen as a reference to what he and the rest of the group were striving for when they first began (like most people). but now their outlook has changed and this was seen particularly during their collaboration with UNICEF. i think suga was talking about himself in particular in this song and i’d like to imagine it links to ‘daechwita’ and the concept of him killing his past self as he grows and evolves as an artist and a human

and about the use of colors, sections and etc: the song is pretty much about acknowledging your shadows and embracing them. The end of the song, with the distorted voice and all the red is pretty much his shadow talking. the lyrics say: you are me, I am you, now you know, we are one body, sometimes we will clash - meaning that his shadows and his dark side is also a part of him and there's no good in trying to disassociate yourself from your shadows. There's a lot of jungian psychology on it (and in this album, with persona, ego, shadow so it pretty much follows this line of thinking.) the scene where the shadows are running towards him and go slow motion, he says "pause"; like he is trying to freeze time and stop the shadows/worries/darkness/bad side of fame/bad side of him to reach out, but they do eventually ... and bring him down... and he falls on the stage where there's tons of people watching and recording him (and his every move) very closely

He is also one of the producers of "Respect" (unit song with RM from Map of the Soul: 7; there is live performance; SUGA and RM have an interview about it - "Answer: BTS 3 UNITS 'Respect' Song by RM&Suga") and he is the main composer and songwriter of "Telepathy" (from album BE; he has interview about it - "SUGA's BE-hind 'Full' story).

SUGA is a producer, so he knows how to put his ideas into songs that will make you feel some type of way. You said yourself that you felt the emotion when he changed the atmosphere. And, trust me, he is an expert at that. So, this just proves that music knows no barriers. I bet most of the people watching you are NOT english native speakers, and yet, we grow up listening to song in this language, not knowing what they say but enjoying it. Also, music is one of the easiest ways to learn a language, it was throught it that I learned english. I am brazilian but I listen to reaggaeton, french indie music and got into SUGA/AGUST D/ BTS because I simply love hip hop. What a surprise I found with Yoongi songs. This is just an advice, don't let this hold you back. I sing the english lyrics and mumble my way when the korean comes up but now I know some words because of how much I listened to it, leading me to sing along. Don't be afraid, it's good fun to challenge yourself once in a while 🖤

your point about wanting to sing songs-im the same way! with english music i always listen over and over until i know the lyrics enough to sing along; however, that’s actually something ive found i like about kpop! i tend to get sick of the songs way slower when i haven’t memorized the words, and its almost like it feels fresh every time. plus, like you’ve said where you can feel the emotions even if you don’t understand-if the music is done well, i LOVE that i can completely feel and understand the feeling conveyed even without/before knowing the words. they serve different purposes & moods in my music library for sure!

It is them lucky number: they are 7, 7 years,..so in them álbum "7" they look into the past while disciphering the analysis of the individuation: persona, shadow and ego. So in Persona (RM solo inside "7" album) they connect with them 1st album "2 cool 4 skool". In Shadow (Suga solo of "7") they connect it to them 2nd album "0!RUL8,2?" If you see the teasers you will see straight away what we will talk about. J Hope done the "Ego" solo song but I will not spoil more the info. My interpretation of shadow is the two sides of fame, how the higher you fly, the bigger your shadow, aka achieving your dream comes with doubt, pain, anxiety, guilt, depression, distrust and all those horrible feelings Suga refers to as his “shadow”. Those terrible feelings that seem to grow and follow him like a shadow as the height of his fame increases are represented in the figures and hands who seem to constantly follow him in the MV, trying to catch him and hold him down. I also like the imagery of glass, mirrors and phones. The glass and mirrors represent internal reflection - the shadow is inherently a part of himself he can never escape - and the phones represent how visible he is due to his fame and how suffocating that visibility can feel. I love Interlude: Shadow a lot, especially the end of the song where the perspective shifts to Suga’s shadow and the music becomes darker, almost predatory, to show the power the shadow holds over Suga and over every one of us, and how the shadow can hold us back and instill fear and doubt but we can never escape it.

This song is amazing. I was looking forward to your interpretation of this specific video and I agree so much with the things you said. There's a part with the mic breaking glass and for me I felt like interpretated how they have broken a lot of "glass ceilings" in music industry today. The first kpop group to do a complete sweep of MAMA and MMA (asian awards show), the first Kpop band to win a billboard, the first Korean act to top the Billboard hot 100, they've just had a lot of first. BTS recently was on a variety show in Korea called "You Quiz On the Block" and i really liked it because each member kind of had an intimate interview where they spoke about some issues that they had. Suga (the rapper of this MV) spoke so raw and unfiltered about how the night they went home after performing at their first American debut performance at AMA's he was in his hotel room crying. He didn't want this thing so burdensome and knew that everything was just starting for them and there was gonna be more. He also questioned "Is this really what we had hoped for?" This MV just did a great job reflecting that.

There are a lot of little details (i.e the doors in the hallway being closed, then being opened by the shadow figures, then being closed when Suga is going back through the hallway) that I never noticed before. I really appreciate your attention to detail from a film maker's perspective. I also like that you listen to the music and read the lyrics off-camera, so that you have an idea of what effect the videographer/director was going for.

would love to hear more about your music perspectives too! I don't speak Korean, but the connection of understanding the song feels way deeper for me than just being able to just sing a song, like spring day by bts, damn that song hits me deeply even before I read the lyrics. (plus u can always attempt to sing it privately in your room and butcher the pronunciation yknow hehe)

This reminds me of Ingmar Bergman's film "Persona" (1966) ... especially when the image of Suga is divided in two. Besides "Shadow" which is the interval, there is Intro: Persona by RM and the outro: EGO which is by JHope. There the three parts of the human psyche are completed. This is a solo within BTS but Agust D is his artist name outside of BTS.

Aside from all the known interpretations of this music video/song. For me, it always boiled down to these themes: the dark side of greed/ambition. Losing contact with ones identity due to that greed. Min Yoongi (Suga's real name) the person vs Min Yoongi the performer/artist. Wanting to be in the spotlight vs. Fearing the spotlight. This song is basically one big self-reflection where he acknowledges his own duality. I feel like he plays a lot with this duality as he does in deachitwa (greedy, ruthless king vs righteous peasant). He has talked numerous times in his songs about how success made him a monster or how success affected him negatively, while still wanted to desperately pursue it. So this is definitely a concept he likes to bring forward in his work. As someone who does art and who struggles with mental health, this song means a lot to me. Of course, only Yoongi knows for sure what he exactly wanted to say with this song.

Suga said he cried alone after they won awards and became successful because he was afraid of success and maybe of the expectations to top what they have achieved. So while he wanted success he also wanted the old Suga and BTS. The higher you go up/grow, the longer is your shadow. Of all the members I think Suga was the one who struggled most. While the family of other members may have supported them e.g. music and dance classes, Suga was discouraged which is understandable from a financial POV. He fought for his music, was criticized when he became idol. When u struggle hard then become successful, you experience doubts first, is this real, momentary?, before you accept your success and savor the fruits. I love Yoongi..

The writing is “ORUL82?” which means oh are you late too, it is the name of the 2nd album in BTS’ school trilogy (their first releases). Each solo from the rappers in the Map of the Soul series samples a part from each of the school trilogy albums. RM- Intro:Persona and Skool Luv Affair Suga- Interlude:Shadow and ORUL82? J Hope- Outro:Ego and 2 Cool 4 Skool.

To put the theme of the song simply the yoongi in lighter clothes is his humble side who only wanted to make music and reach people but yoongi in darker clothes is the darker version of him who wants everything the world has to offer. In the starting the shadows are shown standing outside but when the door opens they actually come out from the inside showing it is not something that one thinks they don't have, the shadows are there and they will come out. One can control them till a limit as they need to be let out once in a while or the darkness will consume you whole. That's why near the end the tone changes and he says 'I'm you, you are me, now do you know', showing that light without shadow/darkness and shadow/darkness with light do not exist.

I knew you'd say "That's a beautiful shot!" a lot of times in this video! 😆 I really admire Suga a lot, especially about how much feelings he put in his song. And how in his solo tracks he takes care of every detail, composing, producing, etc. I have a cat named Yoongi 😅 Yes, Suga has more solo stuff but I don't think the videos would be relevant for your channel. Maybe you could try Agust D "Agust D" if you want to do a video just for fun. It's a pretty simple one but maybe you'll find interesting the place where it was filmed.

Hii just for some context about Jungian Psychology, which this mv (and 2 others) are based on, Carl Jung is a neo-Freudian. His analysis of the self is adapted from Freud, if you are familiar with the ego, superego, and id. The ego exists in both theories to represent the conscious mind (jhopes mv). Jung then divides the collective unconscious into several archetypes, one of which is the shadow. The shadow parallels the id in Freudian psychology, there to represent suppressed primal and subconscious instincts (as seen in this mv). Another archetype is the persona, the social personality or "mask" we wear, which is comparable to the superego in Freud's original theory (as seen in RM's mv). There are a few more archetypes in Jung's theory but these are the ones mentioned. The general theme of these mvs and this era is analyzing the identity of bts, and they do part of this through Jung's theory.

Also if you notice, the first part of the song where he starts off, the colour scheme is mostly red. Then when hes on the stage, its blue. And on the second part of the song, the colours are mixed. It literally shows the mixing of his shadow and his real persona.

Oooo I've never been this early! This was such an interesting live performance as well. I love Yoongi's work. This video ties into Namjoon's "Intro: Persona" and Hobi's "Outro: Ego" and they all revolve around Carl Jung's concept of the self and the shadow self. Those words at 2:03 are a nod to their earlier album O!RUL82
