Hi , Great to see native hedgerows being planted , thanks for the video. I have been planting hedgerows for a long time now however I seek to disturb the soil as little as possible . I simply slit the soil with a knife or sharp spade and insert the bare-root tree./plant. If there is a lot of grass nettles etc I simply mow before planting. I never use weed control fabric and have found that the trees planted in this way survive drought periods much better than those where the ground has been cleared before planting. Each year once or twice I "rescue" the plants from any overpowering brambles etc but I never clear the ground , just cut back a little the offending plants. After about 4-5 years the trees and other plantings will smother out the weeds and you will have an effective and natural native hedge with minimal soil disturbance and intervention. The added advantage is faster planting with no backbreaking working of the soil 😃

I've already told her she's not allowed to have her own social media because I won't be a slave to putting up photos for her millions of followers 😹 I hope that hedging takes off in the US too!! I'm always struck by harshness of fencing opposed to a living boundary in photos some of my friends share on FB. Apparently, HOAs are to blame too. But just imagine how much more bird life would live in neighborhoods with hedging for boundaries! Blackthorn is a barrier in itself but if you wanted to, a hedge planted against a chain link fence would secure the perimeter :)

Great job - I can't wait to see how your hedge develops! We have several 'Maggies' on our property: a cow called Nike who regularly breaks out of the milking pen to munch on my hedges and baby orchard trees; a herd of calves who get their horned heads stuck in fences trying to munch on establishing windbreaks; chickens who like nothing better than to dig up a freshly planted raised bed; oh and my children, who seem to accidentally stand on/fall on/kick a ball onto every new plant I raise or buy and plant out ;)

Ha Ha Ha Maggie! My two cats are indoor so I don't have that problem. But I grow catnip for them (which turns out is a beautiful/pollinator). It got big so I gave some to my neighbor. She planted it and her cat ate it to the ground killing it. So I gave her another clump. Same thing happened. We now have an understanding. I will be Princess's "Dealer." I will grow it and meet her at the back corner of the fence at night under the flood light and give her her "fix." :)

Love this idea! Did you consider a two platform terrace for the berry bushes? It would help with runoff and create a small pathway for ease in harvesting. It is a cat's world and we are allowed to live in it!

I had been thinking about it but will instead be planting the lower area with a mix of native wildflowers. I have foxgloves and evening primrose already growing as small plants in the greenhouse. I'd also like to sow wildflower seeds once I have the rest of the nettles and dock removed :)

Wonderful progress! Maybe the flatter top stones can be used as stepping stones inside your hedgerow to make a path for foraging? That's the kind of thing we use our larger stones for, but I don't know if yours are flat enough. And I am also wondering if they might be too slick when wet for that purpose?

I love this! Your hedgerow plants are amazing. That top driveway must not belong to you? I can't wait to see what you do with the ridge of your new hill. (And the beautiful quartz boulders...) In our state we have a Nature Conservancy in each county and they sell bundles of native plants each spring. Such a great resource.

I'll have to ask my dad about it. (He used to be a private landscaper and also owned his own nursery.) Can't wait to see what your hedge looks like this summer and fall! - Kim

Not sure where you are in the US but in my state (MN) most of the counties offer bundles of bare root trees and shrubs for around $1 apiece. You have to buy them in bundles, but it’s still very economical. Maybe try searching for your local county or state DNR. Also, some of my neighboring counties have different offerings so I usually check those too. ☺️

Hi Tanya! That poly tunnel area looks great and no doubt your new hedgerow will be a joy to have in the months to come. I see you two are providing for drainage at the bottom of the slope as well, a wise idea. Here’s a wild thought….I wonder if some of your quarts rocks can be cut into smaller or brick sized like pieces? To my eye the quarts would make for an attractive herb spiral someplace close to the house.

Yes, we're repairing old seep-away tubes as well. Being on a slope means heavy rain can send us a surplus of water at times! Lovely idea for the quartz 😍

I'm really curious to see how this grows on and fills out. If it was me, I would have tried creating a bit of a swale or flat portion of the hill to lay the hedging into first. Clay soil on a hill with a rainy climate means we have excess water in the soil. So there's no need to retain water in a swale on the bank...we're actually putting in drainage to help move water from that area a bit quicker.

I’m really fascinated by the wild pears, I bet the blossom from them will look amazing. I assume you’ll lay it in a couple of years to thicken the base?

I'm interested in them too...along with everything else! Laying hedges is more for creating living fences for livestock and field boundaries. We won't need that as much so I think I'll just keep on top of pruning the tops when they reach the height we're after and giving the sides a haircut from time to time :)

My opinion on Dock is that the root is, I guess, some kind of medicinal root used by Asians. I know it is edible. It is a bit potatoey and a bit carrotey, but kind of a boring flavor, but able to soak up other flavors in a stew pretty well. I think it is kind of higher calorie, but less than potatoes. I have tried it, but I don't think it's worth it, but it's nice to have as a famine food in case you are somehow foodless. Another thing to consider... is not to forget small things like planting catnip for your cat and for bees. Oh and back to the first thing, you can use burdock, or "dock" as a biomass accumulator. They have a deep deep taproot and are hard to remove entirely... but if you don't want to work too hard, you can have burdock grow at the base of your fruit trees to have the long term effect of mining deep deep minerals with their taproot to keep a regular supply of fertility at the top of the landscape. You can mow this burdock or scythe it, and just leave it to break down. After like 1-3 years of breaking down and turning into worm crap, you get more fertility. I have always thought of Dock as like some kind of ugly bastard cousin of Comfrey that can do a pretty good job at the same task, because what I described above ^ is what hippie gardeners in America use to regularly supply the fertility in their orchards for berries and trees.

Oh dear you're going to need to Maggie proof those bare roots, maybe a fine mesh around them until they are established 🙂 I have a young orchard with different fruit shrubs and I have been using a mesh around them all until they are well established as rabbits and deer would bring them down to nothing 😀
