I may be reading into it too much, but maybe his “friends” are his insecurities and what’s plaguing him mentally. Each verse refers to these, and it’s either his way of coping with loneliness, or he has schizophrenia. The jolliness of the song is a way to juxtapose the severity of his mental state.
