The MLPH gene codes for a protein called melanophilin, which is responsible for transporting and fixing melanin-containing cells. A mutation in this gene leads to improper distribution of these cells, causing a dilute coat colour. This mutation is recessive, so two copies of the mutated gene (or "d" allele) are needed to produce the dilute coat colour. The mutation affects both eumelanin and phaeomelanin pigments, so black, brown and yellow dogs are all affected by the dilution. However, this effect is more pronounced in black dogs. A dilute black (BB or Bb) dog is generally known as "blue," though names do vary for different breeds, such as "charcoal" or "grey." A diluted chocolate (bb) dog is often referred to as a "lilac" and a diluted yellow (ee) is known as a "champagne."

I breed Pekingese. Only had 2 litters by 2 dams. Both dogs had concerns that resulted in a spay. You mentioned several of these concerns. I have babies coming around Labor Day. Thinking positive, but we may need a C section. The momma is small. The ‘Baby Daddy’ is large.

Great advice! I wouldn't breed a dog that many times (age 1.5 to 5 would potentially be 8 litters) though. I feel that 5 litters is enough servitude for any of my girls :) And after that time they can still have a wonderful long life with a new family, should I decide to retire them.

So about the C-section as long as the scars is not too bad and the mother's nipples and health bounces back after the pups you should do a 2Bree to wait heat stop by age 4 what I have seen dogs past the age of four still breeding with C-sections some believe not to have more than 30 or 40 pups from a female and you want to wait start breed the 3rd heat so about 1.5-2yr old

All depends on the age of the female size of the litter and how healthy she is if she’s crated all day and not in good shape. A healthy female dog with small to medium litter could be breed 2 times a year untill she’s 6 then once a year until 9 (depending on breed) a dumpy overweight female that’s kept in a crate year round with no exercise an poor rations shouldn’t even be Breed yearly as it will shorten her life span and create a chance at a loss of life of mother n puppy’s in utero.

I have a female that I am wanting to breed possibly 2 more times. She is an excellent mom, delivered 2 litters natural and has had 2 c-sections. My Vet has checked her over after the last 2 litters which were the c-sections and says she is in excellent health. I would like the last 2 litters to be delivered by c-section as well, and of course each one will depend on her health before we begin inseminations. My question is, do you think that 4 c-sections are to many or that 6 litters are to many? She is 4 years old. She was bred 3 litters back to back, took a break, and bred again.

In old bitches, CoQ10 may help increase the oocytes viability. Anything that increase blood flow to the ovaries during the weeks before ovulation might increase the number of eggs released. (High dose vit.E and L-arginine, O3's fatty acids) Ensuring enough antioxidant nutrients such as selenium, vit. E, Folate, may help avoiding unviable eggs. And essential fatty acids might also help with the quality. Beta-carotene increases progesterone during the heat cycle, which might help with embryo attachment by improving Uterine environment.

Everyone says to skip the first heat, but wouldn't the same reasons not to skip heats be also relevant? The uterus would still be damaged from not being able to shed the lining during whelping. And, if breeding every heat is what is natural to them, it seems to me the same would apply to the first heat as well, or their body wouldn't have began the process. Do we observe wolves, dingos, and other canids skipping the first one? Seems like their uterus would only be become vulnerable from the start as a result of skipping.

What’s considered a large litter?
@Tanouuuu
@Tanouuuu Жыл бұрын
It depends on the breed. A large litter is a litter that is above average, or the maximum this breed can have. I breed pomaranians, there litters vary from 1 to 5 puppies. Average is 3 puppies. So then 5 would be considered a large litter.

GSD - bred my mama dog for the first time after 4 heat cycles, very healthy and active, took to the breeding well, great behavior in pregnancy, smallish litter (5), recovered very, very well (she looked even better than before her first litter, I'd say). She had a very, very hard labor. She killed her last puppy. I was there in time for the 5th, grabbed it from her when she went to bite it's head, and she snapped at my hands to get the puppy (she didn't do this for any of the others). I lowered it just to make sure I was understanding what she wanted and yup, she intended to cull it. I could see nothing wrong with the puppy. I took it away for 20 minutes and reintroduced it. She let it alone. I had to stimulate it and put it on her nipple for that first night. That same puppy was then picked on by its mother until it went home at 9 weeks old - completely blew my mind, honestly... A mother dog holding a grudge againgst its own puppy just for the mere act of causing her stress and existing... Poor thing got abused for just living, pretty much! Just like a Disney film, it was the most beautiful. I personally loved the breeding and the work of caring for the mom and pups - and it was work with her not feeding them unless I made her every 2 to 4 hours for weeks. I decided it must've been too much for her and waited, even though she was physically and mentally sound after they left. Very eager to work and exercise. Big mistake, I thought. Progesterone went through the roof and it was as if I had bred her all over again. Nipples enlarged, she enlarged, didn't want to work, looked absolutely pregnant. Missed the show I had planned to skip a breeding for anyways because of her condition. I bred her again (so a year later) and absolute disaster in her mood/behavior after pups. She did not kill them, but she did attempt to chew on the stillborn she had......... Just wild. Much, much better about nursing (it's night and day not have to feed them for the first 4 weeks!!) and still great about cleaning... But... She glares at them often, and I swear sometimes it's like she's plotting murdering them! It would sound crazy if I hadn't seen what I have already. I actually caught her biting one's head just last week and corrected her from doing it again the next day to a seperate puppy. It was barely 3 weeks old and back off, trembling, into its littermates, and I noticed her and the other puppy she had intended to bite seem so overly fearful. I cuddle them more than most probably do, sit with them on my lap, carry them, and I now bring in my dog's "best friend" to interact with the puppies. She shows the puppies real love - licks their heads, their bodies, gently plays with them, and watches them with such a kind look in her eyes. It makes my heart melt but then I remember how the mom treats them and... it's just sad to watch. I am seriously considered spaying the mom. She is such a superb specimen, but I just don't think she's a "good" mother, and if her progesterone is just going to spike crazily like it does and there is a high chance of disease, it may be safer and smarter for us to call it quits on breeding her. She is my only breeding female, and I just started my dream kennel, but I have already been putting my eggs in other baskets and considering other breeds, too. But I just wanted to write this so everyone who stops by here can see that you can have the most healthy, perfect looking and behaving dog, but they just don't make it through like you might expect.

I can pretty well promise you that a dog in full blown heat only wants to get pregnant. If you’re giving your girl a break for any reason, especially if she didn’t bounce back great or had issues with her last litter, you’re doing her a favor. She won’t think about how she might need that break, so you do it for her.

Funny even when it comes to humans, those families that have 6 to 8 kids back to back seem to be doing alright healthwise. Not saying it's a good idea to have kids or puppies who wont be given a great life growing up, but whether it's people having kids they can actually care for or a dog who has pups that will end up in awsome homes, I am not seeing the problem. Healthwise he addresses this to a decent extent, if the mom struggled in any part of the process, probably best to stop, if not then what's the problem? For the horror puppy mill people, they just suck in general, anyone just leaving a dog pinned up in a cage all the time is pretty crap, whether they breed back to back or not. But living with a dog pack that is a main part of your life, the mom getting pregnant isnt really some terrible hard on her type of thing (unless something else is wrong).
