How to Crochet Mermaid Tail for baby (0-3 & 3-6 months)

Yarn : fine weight yarn #2 (0-3 months), light weight yarn #3 (3-6 months)
Hook : 4.5mm (0-3 months), 5.00mm (3-6 months)
Measurement (0-3 months) : tail without fin 13 inches length, 16.5 inches waist circumference
Measurement (3-6 months) : tail without fin 16 inches length, 18.5 inches waist circumference
Pattern
Tail
---
Make loose knot / magic loop
Round 1 : chain 2, 12 dc into loop. Slip sts
Round 2 : chain 2, 2 dc into every sts. Slip sts (24 sts)
Round 3 : chain 2, * 2 dc, 2 dc into next sts * Repeat * till end. Slip sts (32 sts)
Round 4 : chain 1, skip 2 sts, shell sts (5 dc) , *skip 1 sts, 1 sc, skip 1 sts, shell sts*. Repeat * until you have 1 sts left and you should have 8 shells by the end of the round. Slip sts at chain 1 from early round.
Round 5 : slip 2 sts, 1 sc on top of the shell from previous round (place sts marker). Make shell sts (5 dc in each sts) into sc sts from previous round and make 1 sc on shell sts from previous round. Repeat till end. Slip sts into 1 sc sts at the beginning of this round.
Round 6-8 : repeat round 5
Round 9 - 13 : repeat round 5. Make 6 dc shell sts instead of 5.
Round 14 - 26 or until you reach 13 inches length) : repeat as previous rounds but make 7 dc for the shell sts. Slip 3 sts to start new round.
** add extra 2 round (round 27 & 28) OR make it until you reach 16 inches in length

Row 1 : 34 dc (start from the 4th chain from hook).
Row 2 : chain 2, turn, 34 dc (crochet into back loop)
Row 3 & 4 : chain 2, turn, 31 dc (crochet into back loop)
Row 5 & 6 : chain 2, turn, 28 dc (crochet into back loop)
Row 7 & 8 : chain 2, turn, 25 dc (crochet into back loop)
Row 9 & 10 : chain 2, turn, 22 dc (crochet into back loop)
Row 11 & 12 : chain 2, turn, 19 dc (crochet into back loop)
Row 13 & 14 : chain 2, turn, 16 dc (crochet into back loop)
Row 15 & 16 : chain 2, turn, 13 dc (crochet into back loop)
Row 17 : chain 2, turn 10 dc (crochet into back loop)
Once you made 2 piece, join both piece by single crochet them together.
Create ruffle for the fin by stitching & attach the fin to the tail.

This is by far the best tutorial/pattern I've been able to find for a mermaid blanket. I was able to make one for an 18-month-old by using a heavier weight yarn (Lion Brand Mandala in Troll - gorgeous colours for a mermaid tail!) and 10mm hook, I also upped the dc stitches to 8 and then 9 per shell to give it more width. Thank you for this!

Very well written pattern!! You did great. The only place I had to go to tutorial was to see how to attach the tail! I did do a 5th row of dc before starting the repeat pattern so the little baby could wear it longer! I also slowly increased the size of my hook to make it a little larger around the top...added about 3", if I recall. Started with 4.5, ending with 6.0, increasing 0.5 mm with each change. I definitely enjoyed this pattern!!!

Did you have 32 dc before beginning the shell row? At beginning of 1st shell, you do skip 3 stitches. But did you notice you only skip 2 stitches between each shell after that? Did you perhaps skip 3 stitches between each shell by mistake? I thought of that because is DEFINITELY something I would do... But I actually added another increase row of dc before beginning the 1st shell row, so it would be a bit bigger around. (By adding that extra increase row, I have 10 shells on each row. And every 4-5 rows, I even went 0.5 mm larger in hook size so hopefully baby can wear it a little longer. I hope this helped you figure it out!

I've made one of these from the original instructions and it was actually easier. Reason being is that you said how many stitches to count in between. On this tutorial, the newer one, you have a few rows with 6 Dc for each shell but and you say to sc in center. There is no "center of a six". So do you do the sc in the 3rd or 4th stitch of the shell?

You will find it very easy to do . At each end stop at the last 3 stitches . With muti-colored yarn in blues and greens , the fish body comes out “mermaid” like . It was fun to do .

Please how do you account the stiches in this way .First you beggin with 12dc +1(the 3sts) the total is 13 dc right? Then you increase with 25 dc I mean with the first high sts . So how do you account them in round 3 as 32 dc the total dc are 36 please tell me

HI Ali. Round one 12 dc only, chain 2 does not count as stitch count. Rond 2, make 2 dc in every stitches. 12 stitches x2 = 24 sts. Hope that helps

I did mentioned in the video on the yarn that I use. The brand of the yarn is Ice Yarn, fine weight yarn #2 and size 4.5mm hook. You only ned 1 skeins for the 0-3 months size. All info at the description.

HI Marcia. The stripes yarn I used is from Ice Yarn Brand, Magic Light. If you can't find this yarn, it is equivalent to Lion Brand ice cream yarn.
