In this video, Caring for Yourself After Low Back Surgery with Paul Marquis PT I discuss how to travel back home after your surgery, how to ice, how to lay in bed, how to sit, stand, walk and so much more! Be sure to watch it from beginning to end and watching it before low back surgery will help significantly after surgery. This video is not made to replace what your provider tells you to do before and after surgery but to be a guide to help make your recovery smoother.

This is one of the best informational videos I have seen on this. It’s ridiculous how little info surgeons give you on things like this.

I've been getting into the car this way for years in order to keep my back as happy as was possible. This is one reason that having a handicapped plate is so wonderful since most parking areas just do not allow enough space to open the door. I finally had spine surgery a few weeks ago but am told recovery from this one will take many months. Getting old ain't for wimps.

Thank you. Been 3 wks since surgery. You hit the most challenging topics I've had. Bed #1 problem as mattress is too high. A stepper helped solve the problem, OT provided guidance and assist. So thankful.

So I just found you. Thank you for coaching me how to get home from surgery. I’m having kyphoplasty in a couple of days. My doctor can’t enlarge my vertebra back to its original size but we are hoping to stabilize the fracture and get me pain free…I could come off Norco! Maybe not immediately…and maybe I’ll do some weaning, but darn I’m ready to gain my independence back!

@@judil3294 so you had a laminectomy decompression! I had that too last September. It was an easy out-patient surgery. It stopped the stinging in my legs. But I have a spondylitis lower down that needed fusion to help with the back pain.

Had the same surgery a week ago. How long did it take you to be able to walk at normal speed without pain? I walk about a mile a day but I have to go super slow and it's making the rest of my muscles sore because it's not my normal movement.

5/26/22 I’m 58 and just had a micro discectomy at L3,4,5 R. 9 days ago and wish I would have seen your video sooner Doctor. I have violated some of these like getting out of a chair which I used both arms and picked myself up from the arms on a high armchair. Getting in and out of bed I sat at the edge like you did but no pillow, then rotated to a laying down position. Twisting I tried very hard not to do and was successful for the most part. I know in general all the basic moves being I had the same surgery at L4-5 when I was 24 due to a work related injury. My question is, although my pain is getting better, I’m doing my 10 minute +/- walks and sitting as strait as possible and using a small pillow behind the lower lumbar if needed. I have had up and down days so far and as of two days ago I’m only taking one prescribed Ibuprofen and/or a muscle relaxer if needed. They gave my OxyContin to but I’m trying to stay away from it. In 9 days I only took 10 with the prescription saying 1 to 2 per day. My question: Yesterday I had almost no pain, I was doing my walking and was excited that things were looking up, today and last night not so much. Pain at L4-5 is at about a 3 or 4. There have been these types of up and down days but overall day by day I feel I’m getting just a tad better. The question is, is this fairly normal or common with some people. I’m a bit concerned being I could have been a little more careful in the first 3 to 4 days etc. I did read t my doctor’s directives twice and nothing mentioned about the chair or bed movements. I guess another question is, I would assume I’m heading to PT after te healing time. Will you guys work out the pains if any. Like I said I’m at the 9 day mark and the doc said it’s gonna be about 6 weeks. I go to see him for follow up in a week. Any info would help and thank you for your informative video. I assume it’s not to late and I’m gonna follow it to a tee.

Excellent idea. I've had 2 spinal fusions & that was recommended. I also use cotton sateen sheets ( silk satin is good too ) which makes it so much easier to slide getting in or out of bed & also making it easier to find a comfortable spot in bed. The object is to slide not jerk.
