Low Blood Sugar, Birthday Party & Family Fun

Day in the life Saturday 2/2/13
We have been struggling with low blood sugar for two weeks now! Even after decreasing his insulin for all meals! Very exhausting! Just a normal Saturday for us! Having fun at Henry's friends birthday party & out to eat with my brother and his family!

#1. The stationary was 25 cents on the clearance rack. #2. My kids have never eaten M&M's. #3 Type I diabetics CAN eat sweets just like everyone else.

I put myself in your shoes and think about if it was my son who had diabetes. It just pulls at my heart what you have to do to that little guy to keep him happy and healthy and feeling good with diabetes. You 2 are amazing parents and Henry is so lucky to have such loving and caring parents.

What great parents! My mom and brother at both type 1 diabetics. My mom has had a pump for years and my brother just got one this weekend after going into DKA over the holidays. It's been such a struggle so far, even with my mom having 10 years experience and a pump for over 5 years. You seem to be doing a great job with it :)

What a brave and smart little boy! I started out watching your sewing video and wanted to see if you had any more sewing videos and saw this adorable little boy with a glucose meter. I wanted to watch him do his sugar levels by himself. At 53, I just received my insulin pump a little over a month ago....yes, alot to learn about these but my numbers have never been better! I wish Henry everything good for his control! You both are so involved and its a treasure to watch ~ Hugs to Henry! (& Evan)

The 40s are significantly low! Lows are as bad as highs. His basal rate needs to be reduced by up to 30% when he exercises. Bad idea to remove the pump in the first place. Turn the basal rate down before exercise and for the hour following. Turn it back up and test before dosing again.

Poor Henry with all the low blood sugars. I know my friend who has had diabetes for 30 yrs since she was a little girl says the worst is forcing herself to eat when she doens't wnt to.. That gym looks so fun, love the trampoline and soft pit to jump into!

Thanks!!!!!!!!! Hard is true. Our dr suggest pump but I think it was too soon for us to grasp a new thing, it was too soon. Go back in March..well a couple of weeks and we will talk about it soon. I went back and viewed some video from when your son just got diagnosed and hopefully soon I will see how he transitioned. My baby girl has good days and bad days.

Gosh josh pump looks so good still. Lol Leaim's looks so beat up. Leaim's is green but the paint is coming off. He wears it in his pocket. Not sure y the paint has worn off. I was expecting Henry to get less insulin for carbs than Leaim. Lea gets 1 unit per 30 carbs.

What happens if he goes through a growth spurt? He is almost 4 isn't he? Maybe he is getting ready to grow, and that could be throwing off his blood sugar. You are trying your hardest, so ignore anyone who tries to make you feel bad. My friend who is 36 has had type 1 for 18 years now, and she suddenly started having lows again. Things can change. Dont feel bad. xxx

Man that is a lot of work I just had a friend have her 4 year old son diagnosed with type 1 diabetes that is so tuff!

Has there been any thought or discussion for possibly getting a dog for Henry that can help alert you guys to blood sugar issues? I personally do not know anything about it but I have heard it can be very helpful and also help parents feel a bit more relaxed during the night.

Thank you for sharing. We became part of the type 1 community just this past sept. It sounds strange but I'm glad to know someone else out there is battling lows. Our daughter isn't on the pump yet. It's true about lows=exhausted parents.

We got it from a John Deere Implement. Our house is full of John Deere toys. You can get them at Fleet Farm too. Not sure if you have that place where you live.

Which Gym did you guys go to? it looks very similar to the one we like called Eagles Nest in new Brighton. Its such a nice place, and they have an under 3 area, which works well for our 15 month old :) What a fun day!

Is the pump to raise his insulin levels or lower them or both. In other words since his insulin has been low does that mean his body is processing carbs better? I know type 1 diabetes doesn't go away and there isn't currently a cure. I just thought maybe as he got older he might need less insulin when he eats is that what is happening?

I'm sorry--I knew that; I just thought it was funny, because the conventional "wisdom" about diabetes was "no sweets" for so many years. Of course Type 1 diabetics can have sweets nowadays, in the age of multiple daily injections, and insulin pumps, and tight control of blood glucose, through blood glucose meters with memory, and continuous glucose monitors. I'm sorry if I offended you; I think you're doing a wonderful job raising your sons.
