I got a low clutch pedal on my 300Tdi Defender. Here's how I replaced the mastic and slave cylinders of the clutch hydraulic system.

That sort of job takes me days - I can't help but want to de-rust and paint everything before I put it back.

Agree it's hard to fight the urge to not do that

Totally agree. Unfortunately there is a propensity for many (most) Land Rover owners to turn a blind eye to corrosion and dirt. They then tend to bitterly complain when they have to spend money on fixing things that could have been prevented by a bit of tlc. Preventative maintenance is a much better approach.

Just did this job myself last week, I got rid of the hard clutch line, the flexi and the pigtail and just went for a 1 piece SS braided line. Brilliant mod.

@@RoverAddis so you noticed an improvement even though you already had a spring installed? The LOF spring must be a stronger spring then you think?

It’s a funny thing, the received wisdom to change both cylinders if one fails on the basis of higher pressure from the new part. The hydraulic pressure will be the same, and it’s determined by the springs in the pressure plate. The force required to push back against those only changes if you replace that plate and the new springs have a different rate. If the the old cylinders are of comparable age and are very old, or have been subjected to heavily contaminated fluid that could corrode or score the bores, then yes, replacing both is wise, but in 20 years of LR ownership, owning three vehicles simultaneously at most times, I have never replaced both together and never had a problem result from that.

Any thoughts on the hydraulic fluid turning a dark color relatively quickly? I have a defender with R380 and in the past 3 years of owning it I have replaced the master cylinder once and the slave cylinder 3 times. As well as fitting a new flex hose. After installing a new cylinder I flush the system and bleed it accordingly so I have brand new hydraulic fluid in the system yet after not long of driving I notice my hydraulic fluid has turned a dark brown tint. I’m using TRW master and Lockheed slaves.

Trw master cylindre are crap! I been thru 3 of them, they have a big grove in the cylinder bore that make no sense beside destroying the rubber on the piston. And they make the fluid turn grey or blackish mixing fluid and grease! Keep the original girling just change the inside components with the original kit from Land Rover and it's cheap 👍🏼

Funny, I went trhough at least 8 master cylinder in the last 4 years. I even converted mine to a japanese conversion on the master due to frustration and the master cylinder always shows a similar wear inside the cylinder walls of the c/m. Only thing I have not tried is buying an original LR part. I've also replace the slave and hose a few times unnecessarily. I also change my clutch pedal to an original LR as setting the pedal was already not possible due to worn parts due to age. This year I'm on my 4th c/m and im losing my sh*t.
