MTRUNK you da man! That's a project I keep putting off. Glad you went over it in good detail.

The control arm bolts - on both the upper and lower arms should never be torqued until the arms are sitting at the normal ride height. Put the arm bolts in finger tight, then adjust the ride height by adjusting the torsion bars and with the truck weight on the tires, torque the control arm bolts to spec. This will prevent premature bushing wear or even failure.

Could you remove the lower control arm without removing the brake caliper?
@mtrunk8570 Жыл бұрын
Maybe but it’s more stuff to deal with.

Nice job, and a pretty decent video. Thx for the details. I am pricing lower control arms for an 02 Z66 Avalanche and the prices are running over $300 each. Uppers near $100.

So I took this on yesterday and today. I only did one side. I pressed old bushings out and new in. 2006 Duramax. The paint on the torsion bolt is genius. The torsion part of the job went well. Getting the torsion bar out of the control arm was a nightmare. I used a behemoth 2 jaw puller and a 3 lb hammer. I also had to disassemble the whole suspension. I have 4 wheel drive so had to do CV axle also. Pressing them large bushings out was also a nightmare. Couldn’t use my 20 ton press to get old bushings out so had to press a little and cut off excess and go back to pressing with ball joint press. Did this 5 times until entire large bushing was out. Front small bushing was easier. Pressed small one in with ball joint press and did large none with 20 ton stand press. It went in like butter. Used silicone past and prepared the openings when old bushings were out. Cleaned up the chamfered edge and had that greasy as ice. Happy with result but what a job it was. Used the 129 ft lbs on CA bolts. Did this on the ground. Torsion bar went in very easy as I used a wire wheel on bar end and CA opening and in the well. Put transmission fluid on it overnight. Greased you bar and hole and went in easy. I was surprised. 12 ton jack stand, old triangle steel jack stand, (2) 3 ton floor jacks. My sway bar link was loose causing me noise. Tightened that up on reassembly and the other side. Used Moog bushings. They come as a kit per side. These things are large. Thanks for your video, it helped me with torsion bar. A first for me. I have had this front end apart before just not the control arm. I bought the same torsion bar tool as you. $20. It did a good job. I lubed up the threads.

Shouldn’t you torque these bolts with weight of vehicle on the new bushings? You will tear new bushings

DELPHI TC1846 ball joint is $12.97 and MEVOTECH GK6658 bushing kit (both sides) is $8.01 from RockAuto (then subtract their perpetual 5% off discount code). Any reason you didn't just spend the $21 plus some sweat and tears to just replace those parts instead of paying $147 for the entire assembly?

Read my post and you will see why he just bought new arms. I just did this to one side over 2 days. About 15 hours. Yes 15 hours. Several hours was trying to get bushings out on the truck because I couldn’t get arm off of the torsion bar. Also making tools and plates for ball joint press due to spacing. Couldn’t use 20 ton shop press to remove old due to arm orientation but could to put new in. Spent 5 hours taking old out and 30 minutes putting new in. Enjoyed the experience and yes I saved $160 on parts and $700 on labor. It was frustrating at times and I broke a few tools in the process. Threaded rod isn’t for this job. Too big of a job. Need ball joint press and shop press. I knarled several bolts and rods trying to remove old bushings. Grade 5 bolts.
