Really great review with both a look inside but also a great walk truogh of the usage in a perfect length! I do like a lot of things in this video and may have a tiny cringe:-) I do like that you sometimes used cut and other times did use fast forward, it did a lot when you "jumped over" the slow parts that had no really value, like fitting the two plastics together. About plastic, there should be some markings inside that tells you what type of plastic it is, like PA6 that is a type of nylon. About the Fluke, please correct me if I am wrong but when I read about the model 87, I get the thought that it is made for the hard working electrician, how rugged it is build, it's safety features. I do not think it is made for electronic at all, it is simply the fact that it has so bad a resolution at 6000 and do not go down to micro, and the low accuracy in the low numbers that make it nearly useless for anything electronic. I was glad to see that you decided not to remove the print from the HT118A, there are no reason for you to maybe destroy the meter, just to show a properly empty board-side. You may be right in that 9V do hold more power but everyone do own rechargeable 1.5 batteries and you can always have a set ready, while the 9V is nearly impossible to get as rechargeable and is fare more expensive to buy.The last part where you properly would make a thumbnail was funny but also a bit cringe because it was totally unedited and maybe a bit long, but LOL still funny. :-) IMPORTANT, you forgot to say that you have a patreon account, and maybe you should change your text in the description to a link? :-)

Fried Mule there are 5 87s. the 87 4 I think is the one you're looking for. in my own personal experience as a technician, when it comes to speed, the 87 1,2 and 3 are the best above the rest. no chinese or brymen meter can match them. whatever they say, branded meters will always be the apex when it comes to quality and features. for hobby or ethusiastic electronics work them generic multimeters will do but for people like us, a big no no. 87 1,2,3 and 4s are obsolete. the 87v or 87 5 is the one remaining in the market today. and for that 6k count, you can set it to 20k.

@@chrisblank9090 I do not know about how fast it updates, what I am talking about is if you want to know what frequency it max can detect and it's almost impossible low. But look at it, its a tank of a beast that guarantee that the man get hurt before the meter. That ruggedness is invaluable for an electrician, also the real safety up to 1000V. It's simply build to withstand the harsh environment and not for the electronic engineer. :-) While maybe the Bryman is more geared towards that market with it's 50,000/500,000 count and up to 20MHz frequency detector and micro capability, but fare from as rugged as Fluke. The 87 do also dye if it gets static electricity while the Bryman don't. :-)

Fried Mule the 87 4 does micro. and same with its siblings, the 189 and 187. with acceptable resolution and update speed too (but not on par with the 87 1,2 and 3) I'm an electronics engineer and my business is consumer/industrial electronics repairs. almost 40 years in using various test instruments and brands. in my own personal experience, keysight and fluke are the best choice of them all when it comes to quality and features pricewise. brymens are also good. but when it comes to that min max feature, it's not on par with fluke and keysight. it's a bit slower. that's another feature where the higher ends dominate the market.

Thanks for the excellent comparison presentation. I ended up with the HT118A. Non contact voltage detection is very good especially with low/high voltage indicator.The one thing I wish for , which most meters do not have, is an inductance measurement. Resistors and capacitors are usually marked, but inductors often are not. Although inductors are not installed in the same quantities as other passives, they often play critical roles. When experimenting, it is one of the components which you can "roll your own" so its nice to be able to check your result.

Thanks Dicky! I remember when my grandparents would come back from a vacation and find out that the items that they bought were made in Japan. We would laugh. But then Sony came at us with the Walkman - every tape player, no matter the brand, was called a Walkman! I think it says something when a country makes things themselves - instead of going to whatever country is providing low cost labor. I just reviewed the Hioki meter and it is really a nice meter! You are right - Fluke’s days are numbered IMHO.

Hi Eddie. Great video. You're using the probe master probes. Cool stuff, I use them since years and love them. Very sharp tips, very flexible silicon cable. Best probes ever. Maybe you should do a video on probes one day ... cheap ass ones up to the more expensive ones and what the differences and use cases are ...some come with banana plug type screws others have crocodile clips etc. ppa. ... lots of options available.

Great video ! May I suggest another round of testing to examine suitability for in-circuit testing to measure low resistance range (1000 ohm or so) ? The output voltage of the DMM to measure resistance should be not be high enough to turn on PN junctions, which would falsify the readings. The output voltage of my $34 UNI-T UT890+ is over 1 volt. I am looking for a cheap alternative that could be used for in-circuit testing. Regards

Thanks for the great feedback! I agree, I wouldn't use any meter in a CAT IV environment - but then I'd also be dressed in full protective gear with gloves, head gear, and eye protection. But then the Fluke I pointed out wouldn't be used either I'll bet. People working in CAT IV are professionals who would be using more updated equipment, most likely purchased by their company - so cost isn't an issue. LOL, people get so offended when I show Fluke, IMHO, is not the best option;)

Hi! This is a great vid! I have a kid who is starting to get into this stuff, and I'm looking at multimeters for her. The problem is that she has high-frequency hearing loss. Do you know if any of these meters have a continuity test beep that is at a lower frequency or are they all at high frequency?

But then again, the HT118A at least had an additional light to show continuity. The light was slower than its beep though. Also, if it is just about the beep on continuity, then maybe you could try making a continuity tester yourself for yout needs. There is something that is called a "555 Timer IC. It is a small chip, that can generate sounds and you can choose the frequency that you like. Just look up a "555 Timer Oszilator circuit" and maybe a tutorial online, and then have it light up and make sound (so, you'll have to drive a buzzer and an LED on the output) when there is continuity (so, when current can run through the circuit under test, and thus powering the tester by the current that runs from one pole of the battery to the other through your continous circuit under test, the timer will create an oszillation/sound on the buzzer).

Great - so between the Astro and the 118 I have to choose between a 9v battery (which I hate) with decent buzzer or AA supply with a wimpy beeper (which I hate). Have seen that HT118a model sold under different brands with the same model number. Wonder if it's possible to soup up the beeper. Got tired of having to cradle the meter on my shoulder up against my ear just to hear whether it's beeping or not.

Thanks for asking. No the HT118A and new E model do not beep but they do show the breakdown voltage. It seems some people like the beep and some don't like the noise. It's a great meter for low AC frequency use. I found it stop measuring AC voltage above 2Khz, but can measure frequency to 79,999Hz. Whereas my HP 34401A can measure AC voltage to almost 900Khz and the same for frequency. My Craftsman 82061 can measure AC volts to 30khz and measure frequency to 37,999hz.

True - most meters are bandwidth limited to 1 kHz. Higher end meters will measure up to 100 kHz or higher even.

I have a astro ai trms 6000 multimeter,the backlight is my biggest issue as it only stays light for about 10 seconds. Is there anyway to modify it to where the back light stays on longer. Seeing as it's a $35 dmm I'm not concerned about warranty just functionality

Hi, is it possible to use a lithium cell (4,2V when fully charged) instead of the alkaline cells for all these 3V multimeters without damage for the card and the screen? or only with a storage charge (3,8V)?...or not at all?

Lithium works fine and higher voltage is okay. But lithium is expensive. Makes no sense for battery to cost more than meter.

I think we know these new low cost meters have more functionality than the old designs - but to look at the inside to see the quality of the parts is the real secret. Good review comparing Fluke with the cheaper ones. Much appreciated. Is the HT118A still working? That multimeter seems to be the most popular multimeter for the past year. Im considering the less expensive HT113B model. For my uses, not sure the extra $15 for the HT118A is worth it. That HT118A does look much cooler though... lol Have owned 2 cheap meters in the past so for me, they are throw aways and its just a matter of time when they get thrown. I've got the astro. Obviously I'd like to upgrade in the future. Only real complaint with the astro is when using it for long periods it keeps turning off/timing out. I'm not sure if there is a way to extend that time out or turn it off completely but if there is I can't find it. It's really annoying.

Interesting. I just got the Kaiweets HT118A ($44cdn from Amazon), and there are differences. They look identical, except for the name. One, it defaults to DC measurements, and the temp setting has Fahrenheit in the larger digits. Maybe a newer version of the board. Pretty cool for $44 cdn, but won't replace my Fluke's anytime soon!

Great point, I also have the KAIWEETS Digital Multimeter as a backup to my Testo. I too have owned Flukes, Klein, and other meters, the Kaiweets holds it's own, especially as a backup. When I have to use a meter in harsh conditions, or areas where the meter could get easily damaged or stolen, it's the $34 model every time. 90% of my work is low-voltage anyway, so there's not much compromise going back and forth. The reason I could never replace my Testo though, is the invaluable no-touch switching between voltage and ohms, as I am a low voltage electrician, primarily working on fire alarms and other systems. Being able to have hands-free switching is invaluable, thanks Testo.

I'd love to see a comparison video of klein, fluke, tektronics voltmeters. I have a klein cl900 I've used for about a year with almost no issue. It was the best all around trms meter I could find for work at an inexpensive "i don't care if I break it" price. I found flukes more accurate but also more specific to application.

I have both the Habotest 118A and the AstroAI, both are great bang for buck meters and work well - but like you said the biggest difference in high end meters like the fluke compared to the cheaper meters is in the degree of input protective devices that guard against surges and transients etc. making them much safer for use in serious work environments like factories and other places with serious power levels. As you said the cheaper meters are fine for home / DIY / hobby / bench use, but never use one for high current and voltage situations you would work around in factories & similar areas. I like both the Astro and the Habotest, I also have the Astro AI's little brother the DT132A and its also a good little meter with lots of functionality.

Yea this meter started me looking at other meters and ive become a bit of a collector -- ive really become fond of the newer UniT designs and their meters have really improved in recent years - two newer design meters I can recommend highly since I own both of them, also in the slightly more expensive category are both the excellent UT89XD manual range for around $25 or so and the really nice IP65 rated UT191T-pro auto range that runs anywhere from $45 to $75 depending on where you look. These meters both have newer ruggedized case designs, and a few nice little range features that I really like. If you want a really rugged well built meter take a look at the big brother to the previously mentioned UT191T, >the 195E< professional series, its also IP65 rated and extremely well made for a UniT and runs from $125 up depending on where you look, there are also different versions of the 195 for different applications, one has a range for testing electric motors I believe . I have both the UT89XD and the 191T and im very pleased with both - they have been great with no real complaints but for one, the 191T has an auto backlight that uses a light sensor but id rather have a simple on off button, but short time backlights and auto sensors have been a personal nitpik of mine for some time. You can find reviews of both these meters on Darren Walkers excellent mulitimeter review channel, hes reviewed more budget and better meters than most anyone one youtube.

I made a typo on one comment, the higher end meter I was talking about was the UT195E, its actually marketed and equipped more as a professional meter and costs anywhere from $125 to $150 depending on where you look - but the one I have the UT191T for about $55 or so is also a pretty darn nice meter with a bit less input protection but a lot of the other features including the ruggedized case and IP65 rating, mines been very accurate and stable, highly recommended.

I think some folks compare what is needed in a CAT IV meter to that what is needed in CAT II where most of us work - unless you are an electrician.

I have had the Kaiweets HT118 for less than 2 weeks, and I’m having trouble getting it to come on. I have to turn it on several times before it actually works. I know it has a three year warranty but you have to send it back and it’s really the only multimeter I have. Is this common?

Go to TME or Welectron and order a Brymen BM869 or 839. Fluke quality at less than half the price. Amprobe are good for the money too. These things I wouldn’t dare measure anything over 100v. No front end protection to speak of. A few PTC’s and no MOV’s. Look up Joe Smiths videos of him testing good meters to cheap ones. He highly recommends Brymen, matched Flukes in tests up to 16kv transient tests.

I have the WH5000A and I've used a Fluke 179 at work where one of the things we do is repair control boards on the payment module on vending machines. I see absolutely no reason to ever shell out the vastly overpriced sum for the Fluke. Will the WH5000A last as long as the Fluke? Maybe, maybe not. I have been using the WH5000A for six years now with no issue and if it died tomorrow I would Amazon myself a new one rather than shelling out for the Fluke. $40 or so every six years vs a new Fluke every ten years or so? Easily worth it. Does the Fluke have a tiny bit more precision in a few places? Maybe, but it also has less capabilities and if I really need that precise of a measurement I have my Rigol scope for that.

The Kaiweets HT118A has a capacitance function and has ceramic fuses. The lead locating lights are real nice to have to help avoid those 'OOPS' incidents. Alot of functions with the Kaiweets meter and I feel it's worth sincere consideration. The link provided by 'Kiss Analog' will describe the details. I do wish the 'beeper' was louder though, it's not very audible.

Thanks for the feedback! I think that's changing from the feedback I hear. Redfish is a great meter, and I hear Fieldpiece is a popular option. You still get the safety but more features at a much better cost, e.g. free bluetooth connections and apps. If ya had tested further on tghe habotest the LED also works with continuity and the backlight turns red in higher voltage tests like AC -- also has a good diode range, wish you had done all the range tests to tell everything about the meter, I have one and its got more features than youve shown, watch Darren Walkers review of it he shows all the functions and features.

That was pretty comprehensive! The HT118A looks like good value for money. I note that you didn't do any measurement comparisons between them - do you find that accuracy isn't an issue with these tools anymore? I've had excellent customer service from Fluke - really excellent - so I would lean in that direction just out of loyalty I guess. They are expensive and feature poor when compared to less well known brands (a problem Agilent seems to have as well) so second hand is the best source. Extech seem to do some good meters at a low price - I think I picked up my Extech EX330 for a similar price (in GBP) to the HT118A and it looks like it has the same features, apart from the flashlight. Just to round this off, everyone needs a minimum 4 meters on their bench, ignore what the wife says :) - Incoming V and A and outgoing V and A. At $35, or $140 for four, the HT118A looks hard to beat.

Yes it is and makes a lot of sense, the Habotest is a great bang for buck meter with its myriad of useful features. I learned about it from Darren Walkers meter review channel, highly recommended for anyone interested in meter reviews, mostly budget meters but many others as well. In fact I think the Habotest won his 10 best budget meters of the year shootout. He features lots of newer UniT stuff that I like much better than their older meters. Certain folks criticize these lower priced meters due to their minimal input protection compared to Fluke and the like, but people should be made aware meters in these price classes arent intended for or equipped to perform serious high voltage work no matter what the CAT ratings say. Even reading 120v could be dangerous if one was unlucky enough to encounter a surge or transient while in use. I feel these sub $100 meters are mostly for home/hobby-DC/bench/DIY electronics use where one never sees anything over 120v - if you need a meter to trust with your life then get a fluke or similar by all means. But far as accuracy many of these lower priced meters are capable of accuracy equaling much more expensive meters, they just dont have the input protection for serious more dangerous areas so those criticizing budget meters should choose meters accordingly, not everyone needs a $500 Fluke for hobby or home use, like any important tool one should select a multimeter according to the job at hand and take note of any possible dangers that job may hold. But again, far as accuracy ive got meters that cost as little as $20 that show amazing accuracy even when compared to very expensive meters, and these make great low voltage electronics DC bench meters as most electronics are low volt designs by default - this kind of work just doesnt need a $500 Fluke for accuracy.

Great question! Unlike the old days where there were a lot of discrete components - these new meters have microprocessors like your TV and Phone - so they don't drift near as much and stay on point for much longer. Unlike meters designed 20 years ago - like the ones people have so much faith in - these are the new tech that just work and keep on working.

@@KissAnalog For a bench meter, I generally agree with you, however, even there you still can be affected by the tolerances of various sensors used or resistors used to make voltage measurements of current. For a field meter, accuracy over temperature can vary a lot as almost all semiconductors have significant performance variations with extreme high or low temperatures. And the high count BGA and similar packages can have solder failures after a number of temperature cycles. Simpler chip packages in less featured meters often are more reliable than the dense chips used in the feature laden devices. Just something to think about when buying a meter that may be used in locations beyond a room temperature workbench.

Those that show a bunch of resistance and voltage measurements are useless- especially when the reviewer attempts to show references? The reviewer never shows what the actual tolerances are. When’s the last time a reviewer ever proved a meter was out of calibration?

37:53 why is that interesting? shouldnt it go down to zero ohms? with the fluke you would have to subtract the 3 ohms its reading from whatever your measuring. if your measuring resistance of a circuit you dont want the resistance of the meter to factor into that.

Great question. Most meters read the ohms of the leads, so you just subtract that out as you suggest, or you can use the relative mode like what the Astro meter has that zeros this out. What’s interesting is the Habotest seemed to zero the reading automatically.

It is a nice upgrade 6000 count, true RMS, capacitance readings up to 100,000 uF and temp reading, plus dual display. I think you will like it. Despite the comments here, this video has a few flaws for us plonkers trying to get the inside track. The Habotech 118A is not completely disassembled. Secondly, there are way too many multimeters on that bench. I would highly recommend complete disassembly the Habotech 118A to show off the opposite side of the board and bit of zooming in when identifying components for us newbs . . . as for having to reassemble it, just have a giveaway and send the meter to a viewer/subsriber/patreon in a draw of some kind if you don't want to be bothered with reassembly. Just put the whole shebang in a ziplock freezer bag, stick in the box, and write the url of the video on the box or ziplock so some poor schmuck can reassemble using your video tear down. Give aways are always of interest to new viewers specially for a nice 118A that is a step above the cheap-Os on safety with those two ptc thermistor resistors, fuses, and other on board items.

I've used Fluke multimeters over the years.. but to be honest, these days I see no point. I have a Fluke laying around somewhere, but for 99% of everything I need a digital multimeter for, a cheap Chinese one will do just fine. I bought lots of them and keep them here and there so one is always available where I do various stuff. They cost next to nothing and do the job just as well as a Fluke does, for all the 99% stuff. When that's said, I would maybe supply that with an HT118A, just for that 1% case. Possibly. The Fluke I have can stay wherever I once put it.

I grabbed that exact AstroAI mm recently for $30 and I really like it at that price. The one knock I'd give it is something you noticed, too: The continuity is a bit slow. It's not immediate to sound-off. However, once it gets going it speeds up so I'm not sure if it's a resistor or cap issue or if it's designed that way?! I'll tap a nail and it'll take a second or two to sound. Then, it'll sound immediately from then on so I assume it's a feature and/or issue with changing function. Not sure.

Here the fluke looks like the crappiest, i know its probably a better meter for some reason since they can sell them for more monkey. But im loving the meters being produced by the ODMs, they are really crushing it on price idk how you could offer all that for anyless. Its awesome that anyone can afford a tool which does so much. just the fact its auto range at 30 bucks is amazing then u realize its got NCV. auto shut off that lets you disable it if you want? whats next a speaker instead of an annoyign buzzer that plays a pleasent calming sound. just a gentle reminder that you forgot to turn your meter off. that would really make my D go from 6 oclock to midnight, I got a transistor tester that does all the other components for 10 bucks which is super cool cause it has a display that is dot matrix and pretty big and prints images of pin outs and stuff i love it.

Yes, but you guys that need the low frequency filter - that is handy to have, but even many Flukes don't have that. The best cost/value is the Amprobe AM570 IMHO (owned by Fluke).

@@KissAnalog That AM570 sure looks good. However, I am not quite familiar with the modern tools. But about 20 years ago when I tried to do such measurement at customer's facility with some company provided $50-60 AMPROBE it just froze up with strange symbols on a display. FLUKE 77 offered by customer couldn't do the job either. But my own TRMS FLUKE 76 handled that task just fine. BTW, it (she :)) still works today with the same accuracy and reliability as on day one. I paid about $200 for that made in USA meter (with a pouch and alligator clips) but I've never ever got any single regret about that decision.

Just discovered you . . . pleased. DMM's ----- I could a book on. No question paying for fluke quality but no way I can. So that leaves thousands of cheap oriental choices with all about the same features and quality. What is funny, and puzzling, is the names. Why not hire someone that comes up with a name that's pronounceable ? (names like: Wangdoo/Lickatit/Pukemarestor/Eleliktrfytor) It's almost a deal breaker for me. Wish a company offered a basic model with a choice of features. I'm shopping again looking for LO-Z and/or low millivolt AC; power and backlight that I can choose; a fast and loud continuity feature. Already have a good LCR meter, don't test motors or HVAC or cars. Not much choice. Just saw that Amazon makes a series of DMMs do you know anything about them? Thanks.

You should test the HRC fuses as well, maybe it's not filled with sand? Maybe it's filled with some cost saving or inferior material that can't extinguish arcs and the molten fuse wire, for example, does not sticks to such material. I'm sure Fluke would not cheap on that, since their CAT ratings are genuine. (and board design is made with the ratings in mind as well)

They do cut corners, at least a bit on the Chinese made ones. They are not cheaper just because the labor is cheaper. The build is a bit different. The 15 and 17 models . I watched a tear down comparison.. They are still much better than most meters, but not quite as good as the US ones. I've been shopping for a meter for quite a while. Can't seem to make up my mind.

@@coon-si3ce Starting from the year 2000, Chinese labout got more expensive, but then again, China is still China, I dropped Fluke few years back, and I'm on my with benchtop DMMs anyways. Handheld stuff is bit of a toy. I mostly use Keysight's products. I would recommend you the same, or some US made second hand Fluke and one of those "new" fangled Russian component testers, or just a LCR meter alongside it.

The best Multimeter is the one you have in your toolbox when you need it. Fluke meters are looking a little dated now.

You missed a feature in it. If you are on continuous backlight and and you test AC voltage with probe, the backlight turns red as warning. 🙃

An older tech once had a joke about my Fluke meter: "if you ever get an accurate reading with one it must be a fluke!" Evidently he had something better (not sure what) but I thought Flukes were supposed to be decent for most stuff so was surprised to hear that, tho may have just been a joke, not sure. The guy knew his stuff and worked on more sensitive equipment than me, but was also kind of a nut always saying crazy things so not sure, lol.

Thanks for this feedback! I think one reason was that since they were always expensive people would buy the lower cost meter like a 77. The problem is that the 77 is still expensive but is an average in meter - not TRMS! So people could get the wrong reading on a dirty power system. But people knew Fluke was supposed to be good so it was a joke - it must be a Fluke. At least that’s the way I took it.

This is like comparing a Lexus LQ to a Ford EcoSport. The Lexus is very expensive, $80K and filled with great features while the Ford is quite cheap $20K. They both take you to the same places, etc. These meter comparisons are the same. Sure, if you are a technician, you should buy the one that is more reliable and "expensive," but if you just use it sparingly, why spend more money?

Thanks for that great feedback. But, like the Lexus, there are plenty of competition that is between the Ford escort and above the best Lexus. At better prices too;). But, it is unfair to compare Lexus with Fluke….it would be more appropriate to compare the Fluke to the Cadillac. The Lexus comparison is closer to the Hioki;)

In this case, the fluke would be used as a precision reference only because a fluke with a Chinese multimeter of $ 40 is incomparable.

Thanks for your feedback! Yes you are right, and at close to 10x the price you do get better precision, but then we are talking fractions of a percentage point.

The best multimeter (cheap or expensive) is still old style analogue one.
