It's pretty cool to see this kind. You're much more hesitant to go head long into your opponent.

There is an almost inverse relationship between what is "safe" and what is "badass". While we all know safety is of paramount importance, we didn't start practicing historical fencing because we wanted to feel "safe". This is awesome, man. Keep it up!
@iantheduellist3 күн бұрын
Safety is always better, but please do keep in mind that a lot of us who live in shit holes (Like me, I'm Mexican) we don't have much available. So low gear, sparring is the only thing we've got. Also, money is tight so no steel swords and of course a looooot of control, healthcare is either terrible of pricy where I live. Also, with those ultralight sabers I can't imagine needing a lot of protective equipment, so this is not that risky if you have good control. Except for thrusts of course, those are risky without jackets.
@notgiven397115 сағат бұрын
You could use foam swords instead for much safer low gear sparring.
@iantheduellist14 сағат бұрын
@@notgiven3971 Yeah, but its dificult to get a lot of people into HEMA with foam swords. I have a small HEMA club and I want to keep growing the thing, so I do have to take into account that foam, as safe as it is, won't attract a lot of people. Not to mention that its too light.

You mention a "Why, and philosophical application" of low gear sparring. Could you elaborate on that? This is lowkey some of the coolest shit you've done tho.
@ClockwerkMan3 күн бұрын
I can give *an* answer, though maybe not *his* answer. The first is the training mind set. It's very easy to get stuck in ego, and the goal of "winning". Doing so is when the worst injuries can happen. The point is to practice with a goal of learning, not winning. At this high of a level, they aren't training control any more, they have it. Using that precise control, they're training their eyes, their speed, their reflexive planning. One of the big reasons to spar low gear is emphasis on fearing the sword. Fighting defensively, and with consideration for their sparring partner. They could probably do crazy stuff and force doubles if they wanted, but the more real danger for both participants encourages responsible fencers to be more measured and considerate in practice.
@jonthestick76062 күн бұрын
@@ClockwerkMan ok, so this is less of a tournament/sport thing, and has more to do with "real swordsmanship." For lack of a better term. Thanks for the response. It reminds me visually, of the ritual duels that the German nobility would do in the early 1900s.
@ClockwerkMan2 күн бұрын
@@jonthestick7606 I'd say it's useful even for tournaments. It increases your odds of scoring a blow while defending an after blow, and puts the emphasis on practicing specific techniques rather than point scoring. A lot of newer fencers will take attacks that can get doubles. That's not a great way to practice, either from the more martial purist perspective or the fight sport perspective. From the martial purist perspective, you're basically practicing to instantly die. From the sports perspective, you're practicing at best to tie, not to take engagements where you score safely.

I think you are being overcautious and your comment is huge generalization... In Belgium, a lot of HEMA clubs train in tshirt most of the time. And no, they are not doing, and not getting serious injuries either. They learn to adjust their strength to protect their partners. The main problem with that training is not injuries. It's the lack of realism. To avoid injuries you need to slow your cuts and thrusts at the end of your action. If you only do that, you don't learn to fence at realistic speed. That being said, it's entirely possible to practice quite a lot with just a mask and a pair of gloves and learn your manuals just fine if you also use your full gear regularly. That's what most of us do here. If i'm just sparring my students at the end of the class, i'll usually bring a plastic plastron, forearm protectors, gloves and mask. That's all i need most of the time. Yes, i'm getting a small bruise from time to time but that's about it. If you are a beginner, you can also do that if your class is teaching you control. One of the club in Bruxelles practice 90% of the time in tshirt. No plastron no vest. Half of them don't even own a vest really. And you know what? They rarely get injured. This club does not care about competition at all so they only do friendly sparring with other clubs. Of course, if they wanted to compete, they would need to gear up to be able to get better at full speed fencing but a lot of clubs don't care about competition at all... At my club, we just do a mix of historic martial arts and more competition oriented drill, and we also practice in full gear sometimes and minimal gear at other times. Been teaching for 2 years now (military saber / broadsword) and worst injuries i've seen are a few big blue bruises. That's all... What you propose is totally viable, but the way you present the risks is not realistic imo and some clubs do it just fine.

The biggest reason for my caution is because of my reach on the internet. Im very cautious about normalizing this to 10s of thousands of people. You and your people may be doing it right, but I do not want to influence a person in their backyard to do something that may result in an injury or worse.
@JeremyRoyaux2 күн бұрын
@@FalseEdgeHEMA ok that is a argument i can understand and respect, of course. Sometimes, it can be hard to handle such a way of training with some people that got no self control or want to play at "showing they are the best" so there are some potential problems to handle if if you don't, it can get dangerous indeed. And if two noobs are starting alone in their garden, that's a real issue as well :)
