This instrument is called a Khaen, [ ca-uh-n ] it originated in the country of Laos and northern Thailand. the Khaen is Laos national instrument. The Khaen might look easy, but you must learn how to play the instrument non-stop while taking breaths, it was developed to play non-stop.

When I first heard this instrument played I heard it through a Lo-Fi beat, and I genuinely thought it was just some computer generated noise, a good one but a noise from a computer. I fell in love with the sound but when I found out that it was an actual instrument making this sound that somebody was genuinely behind this instrument this sound I fell even more in love the fact that this is an ancient instrument that creates such an unusual and unique sound that you cannot mimic anywhere else absolutely thrills me. I'm a first generation Lao-American being the youngest of four children of varying ages and I always remembered the certain sound khaen's had. There was this American guy named Johnny that used to show up to all the family gatherings and had a natural talent with the khaen. I don't remember anything about him though other than he eventually moved to Laos, but Hal definitely made me and most of my family and their friends remember Johnny. I miss hearing all the laughing and cheering at gatherings as a kid. Where all these Lao people would drink, bust out a keyboard, maybe a guitar, and a small khaen would eventually make an appearance.

Not true. It's native to Laos and northeastern Thailand, because northeastern Thailand is mainly populated by ethnic Lao people. Its just as old in Isan as it is in Laos. Northeastern Thailand is also not the same as northern Thailand.

Isan people are essentially Lao people so I see it as the same thing as originating from Laos. But you were right about northeastern Thailand being different .

There’s not a single word in the dictionary that describes the feeling I get when I hear this song. The first time I listened to it, was during 2020 peak covid and it was just such a vibe and the type of song you’d listen to in the car at night. I’m now graduating highschool in less than 2 weeks, and every time I hear this it’s a reminder of how simple life was back then. We all take childhood for granted, and we don’t realize it until it’s over. So to whoever is reading this, I hope you find your path in life that allows you to continue being a kid in someway because there’s no reason that we shouldn’t all still be able to enjoy life through the lens of our younger self…

I usually feel connected to one part of a song. A line, a melody, a phrase, maybe even the chord sequence. I have never felt so connected to any song like this ever before. I feel like I've known this song my whole life, yet it is such an original sound that I have never heard before. In his performance, he is so passionate and is making a beautiful sound that seems seamless. I am so grateful to be able to hear this. So, I guess this is a thank you. For all the hours of hard work and practise that goes un-noticed. For posting the video. Thank you for this beautiful sound and this moment where it is just me and this piece of music.

This sounds like the perfect song to listen to when you’re in your own little world doing something you love. I would put earphones in my ears and blast this as I dramatically skate around the ice rink while the rink slowly becomes empty with just me left by myself at the end. I can imagine myself just skating, having fun, sweating from all the fun movement on the ice and just vibing. After, once the rink becomes empty, I’ll go to the centre of the rink and just bow to a crowd of emptiness. And that’s how I want to listen to this song.
