I am not a mechanic! I have, however, turned my share of wrenches. I am glad you did your diagnosis first, because in the first clip you gave to us, I would have immediately replaced all of the belts, then we would go from there (they have to be replaced anyway.) Great job, as always!

It just amazes me who tough these Detroit 2 stroke Diesels are. This remind me of a person in a bagger Harley electra glide he came into the shop I was at complaining about a rough running engine. Turned out he had a broken connecting rod and the wrist pin. The piston forced the rod down and the other forced it up. The Mechanic was amazed. The person with the bike was also amazed when the mechanic rebuild his engine in 2 hours. It took longer for him to pull out the engine than to rebuild it.

Do you have a spin on adapter for those sizes of fuel filter threads. Allowing you to remove the filter. Spin the adapter on. Hook up hoses to a fuel container. To check for max flow rates. If that does not exist your machine shop buddy could knock you out one quickly. My friend had a nurf ball with a hole for an air nozzle to pressurize fuel tanks to prime diesels. But that could also check for max flow.

@chrisstoddard11442 ай бұрын
I wholeheartedly agree. If the engine speed is up against the governor, it's not the engine that's holding things back--it's the drivetrain.

Never heard the engine lug down, are you sure the torque converter or trans isn't slipping ?
@BusGreaseMonkey2 ай бұрын
The turbo boost is way lower than it should be by like 50%. Yes the torque converter will let it keep up pretty high rpm but not go anymore. A bigger run at it let it up shift into higher gear then lug back down to torque converter.

Wrong boost gauge. It's a combo vacuum/boost gauge for gasoline engines. Diesel's don't see vacuum... at least they shouldn't.
@andrewdonohue1853Ай бұрын
i actually wasnt aware of that. i am a truck driver and i own a diesel sub compact. i always thought they produced vacuum, it's higher compression no spark plugs and a different fuel but i assumed the vacuum was created by pistons moving up and down. they are still "air pumps" arent they?
@erikkovacs3097Ай бұрын
@andrewdonohue1853 I suppose if you want to be anal, you could see a slight vacuum with a dirty air filter going downhill and engine braking, but you'll never see the vacuum that a gasoline engine with a throttle plate sees. That's where the vacuum comes from; a restricted intake path when the throttle plate is closed and the pistons are trying to pull air in. Diesels have no air restrictions (although these detroit diesels have an air cutoff plate for emergencies).
@andrewdonohue1853Ай бұрын
@@erikkovacs3097 i think i remember that now. diesels simply regulate the fuel, where a gasoline engine regulates the fuel AND the air. for example i look at my little kubota 3 cylinder, the throttle linkage hooks up the injection pump and nowhere else. is this why you never hear about a runaway gasoline engine? it simply cant happen because the throttle plate is regulating the air charge, and it would simple go extremely rich and stall? is diesel runaway still a thing on modern diesels? you dont hear about newer diesels running away anymore.
