When you first start your small scale business.
landscaping customers try to take advantage of you.
You're flat broke and terrified.
You apologize to customers too often, beg them for work, act like a slave and let them take advantage of you.
You run to them at the-drop-of-a-hat and do anything for them.
After several years. You're STILL showing up to their million-dollar-mansions in a rusted out pick-up truck.
They LOVE it!!
They Can't Get Enough!
And... they love YOU! "So You Think".
You're the most popular guy on the block and you think you're really "gettin-it".
One-day, after your truck breaks-down the 3rd time in a month. You start to wake-up and realize that you need to raise the prices or literally go out of business.
So you raise all your prices, just a little.
Immediately these customers start dropping you on your head.
You're confused and scrambling because you don't think you can replace them.
You are heartbroken because you realize that
You've been looking for love in all the wrong places.
You realize that you've been duped.
Case & Point: Letting people walk all over you is what broke people do. If you're broke it's Because you're letting them walk on you.
"Trust me I've been there,
longer then I'd like to admit"
But you're the the one sticking around.
You are the one co-creating the situation.
You are the one re-inforcing the pattern.
Did you know...
There's this thing called "Marketing"?
It makes your phone ring.
Have you heard of it?
Because If you knew that you could easily replace low-paying clients with high paying ones.
You wouldn't even sweat it.
You'd take a breath and brush it off.

Spot on Keith! I built a maintenance route and was making money and loving life. Then I got burned out.. I couldn't hire anyone with out raising prices. So I did, $10 each ish. I lost almost everbody.. all these people that were happy to see me, how's the kids and such. Thought I was ripping them off.. they wanted to help the little guy, stay little. So now I'm building a new customer base. Thanks brother!

Customer-"I know a guy who will do it cheaper" Me- "I know customers who are willing to pay more for my excellent service" Don't compete on price there is always a scrub willing to work for beer money or some bored retired guy driving the market value down. I sell quality not not a discount. The $20 mow guys are out of business after one season. And the retired guy doesn't care sell quality the right customers are there and are willing to pay. Thanks Keith love the videos love the passion.

Just had a lady in the neighbor hood that I mow 2 other lawns ask for an estimate for mowing. I told her 45 and she said can you do 40 because we are going to get other estimates . I said sure because I was already in the neighborhood and didnt have to move the truck to mow her lawn . So I stopped by the next day mowed and left . Within an hour she was calling and texting about blades of grass missed because we didnt move large branches and can you please come back and look at it . I told her i would call her back later due to being on the mower at a different property . When I called her back she didnt pick up ( mad because I didnt jump) so I texted her and said that I was on site and everything looked good , we do not move large debris unless arranged and there is a fee for that as it takes time . She called back and tried to make sense of me picking up her yard every week before we mow lol . I told her that I will NOT do that for the price of $40 and she should find someone else if she is not happy with our service . I gave her the mow for free and moved on . This was a new low paying customer trying to take control early before she paid a penny . Years ago I would have bowed down to her and did anything to keep this crap property . Today Ive taught myself if I have anxiety when you show up that it is not a client for me . Dont let people take charge unless they are paying you what your service is worth . Tell them to look on craigslist ! Remember that the economy is booming right now and there are plenty of people that will pay good money for your service ! Good video Keith!

Keith, thank you for taking the time to make this video. I was just thinking back on this same thing. I grew up in a low income home in Alabama without even air conditioning. I remember late nights helping my dad fix the car so he could go to work the next day. I am not complaining about it because I'm proud of where I came from because I was also taught values and honesty. But it's a hard lesson to learn that everything is relative. Everyone doesn't come from a background of monetary struggling. When I first began pricing jobs, hiring, paying taxes, and really running a business this very thing hit me like a ton of bricks. "Upgraded identity" wow! What a way to put it. Thanks man.

I grew up in a no money home too. I thought I was stealing when I got a job that paid me 50$ an hour... I just quoted and got a job for over 100 an hour and I have a few saws, and truck and trailer. Quoting more soon. Thank you for helping me understand I can do this stuff for 20$ an hour if I want to be in business. You are saving me and my wife a lot of the struggle you had to go through. Im genuinely thankful.

Same here, i thought it only happened to inmigrants. I did so much work almost for free becouse i honestly did not know how to do estimates . I also notice that starting up u get the worse of the worse clients , they are not only very cheap they are also have high expectations. Makes depressed only to remember those people, they know that they are taking advantage of you.

My advice would be for someone who just starting out. Have a base price on square footage. Example $60 4 a small lawn 1000 square foot for a one-time service if it's weekly lawn care service $200

Keith, this is the most scariest video you have ever made. This video hits me hard. I have been doing yard work on the side for years. I started back in 2006. I would mow a few yards on the side while I worked a full time job. I was charging $10/hr. It was just extra cash and I liked doing it. Now in 2019 I have been doing this full time for 4 years and haven't worked a job since!!! I love it. My rates have went from $10/hr to $15 and up. I am now at $35/hr for general work. If the chain saw comes out I am at $85/hr. If I am trimming a tree I am at $125/hr. Those are general rates that I use to price a job. I am going to be looking a a new rate because I have my tree trimming equipment and I took a class to learn how to climb a tree. I am dealing with old customers that won't pay. I have already decided that I am dropping a customer next year because he thinks everything that he wants done with his yard is part of the mowing fee. I don't make money and his yard is a pain to mow because he has planters everywhere in the yard and you can not get anything in his mulch. I look at my customer list every season to decide the new rates. I like my customers but if I drop a customer I can pick up 2 new customers before I get home. lol This video is so true and so hard hitting. Also I am waiting for Brian to announce that I won the free ticket to the event on Nov. 9th but if he doesn't say my name I am buying a ticket afterwards for the event. I will be up there for the event!!! Plus I want to finally meet you!!! Have fun next week. Today it is raining so I can not mow but I am able to personally secure my couch today!!!! lol

It’s fucked up, man. I feel you, bro. Last year I did ANY job just to get my foot into the door. I learned how to do so much, and I made $, but this year I know what I’m worth and I’m charging more. My customers usually won’t pay more than $500 for ANY job. I took down a 60 foot maple near power lines over a tree house for $600, and I spent 16 hours in that tree. At the end I was apologizing to the guy for having to charge him “so much”. Same as you; money is worth a lot to me. I don’t blow $1000 shopping for clothes, I don’t spend hundreds in entertainment. But my skill is worth a lot of money. Want me to climb 50 feet over your house with a chainsaw? $250/hour, all the way up. No deals, I’m too busy. I hope I get there before I go broke. Best of luck to all the guys in the same boat!

So well said. These clients will prey upon new businesses and start-ups pretending to be loyal and supportive but really they're ripping us off left right and centre. Its something I think any new business owner who didn't have parents/mentors that have also run businesses will go through. There is a point where you just crack it and say no more. Fire the low ball clients and charge what you deserve. Many clients will walk, but the really genuine and honest ones will stay.

I see what you are saying. I have so many customers that I want to drop because they are either barely paying me or are condescending and a complete ass to work for. The problem is that I need their money to live off of so I’m screwed. It’s starting to get discouraging when all my money is going into the business and all though I’m upgrading my equipment, I still don’t have any money in my pocket. It seems like the bigger my business gets, it just means that I will have to spend more money on equipment. It’s a never ending cycle

I understand 100%. I used to do the same exact thing. I remember charging a customer $50 for computer repair and feeling guilty for charging them at all! I was so used to being an employee and just working, the idea that I could demand a good price for my service felt weird. Now, I turn away the clients who can't afford me and I charge thousands of dollars for jobs that I used to do for a couple hundred dollars.

Yes this needs to be talked about more especially in our industry. We all need to be able to refuse work, don't do everything , learn to say no. And yes raise prices, we too deserve the right to live a decent life and this work isn't easy. It may be low cost of enrty work but it's fucking LABOR and hard labor aint cheap is the way i look at it now. After I raised prices I got a much better client. I went from cleaning up dog shit infested, overgrown weed infested shitholes to well manicured lawns which requires much less work for more money. Keep it up man

I just finished doing a cedar soffit job.. 300sqft.. and trimmed out a post.. took me 3 trips including delivery of materials and a couple unknown things added to my time.. I charged 100 for delivery and 500 for the work.. that's only $200/day when you think about it.. or in other works 1.65/sqft.. the customer lives in a very big house in a nice neighborhood he's got money. I didn't charge enough. At first I thought the job would only take a day... So I look at it as a learning experience. And at the end of the day, I have a happy customer who will talk about me and potentially bring me new customers, which I'll make sure to charge more. So basically this job wasn't a loss it was paid advertising! In the best way possible which is Word of mouth. That's just my thought. Cheers

I think that there is not one individual on earth who likes being taken for a ride, I mean just the thought of somone robbing you right?! that said there is the other factor who can afford what? some people can afford the higher rates and they know they in return will receive that high quality for top dollar, but even top dollar earners you have to sometimes convince that you are not trying to get one over them in small ways, all in all life is and always will be a balance act, I believe ( in my heart) that most people are good people and not trrying to break your back or misuse you, it's just that balance thing how much will they pay for you to remove their conflict or pain in their life with your service and how much do they value that price to be? there will be times we as contractors will overprice and times we undercharge. This is a huge topic and bottom line I feel is that most people look for a great deal/steal when they go shopping , I know I do. the formula is and always will be give great service at great rates annnnnnnd you will always be busy guaranteed! MUCH MUCH RESPECT to you Keith! Peace!

I owe you lots of thanks Brother, was not long ago I watched your struggles and your overcoming those struggles you learned a lot along the way and at the same time you taught others to watch those same pitfalls. Yes I was paying attention and learned a lot and probably the biggest thing I got was that motivation side of it you screaming YOU CAN DO IT MAN. Never forget where you came from not as a way to keep you down but just as a reminder man to keep you goin strong, I remember about 28 yrs ago man just trying to run a fast food joint for my Pop new business in Brooklyn and waiting 20 to 30 minutes each time for someone to buy a .99 cents hamburger and drink, see that was golden money then a $2 sale or $8 handbag sale when i ran a shoe repair. Those lessons will never leave me and that will always keep me in check. All about the balance Bro, don't forget to let them ( your customer) know you care! remember 20 percent of your customers will pay 80 percent of your bills so treat them like G O L D, you worked hard to get those customers now work harder to keep them!. As always much love to you Brother I love all your vids and binge watch them over and over again! lol Peace!

I can relate to so many of your videos. To you and your commenters how do you get over the guilt feeling? I still feel guilty when I charge high prices for clients? I feel like you said and say “Sorry” to the clients for the fees but with all of the expenses of paying employees, taxes, bills I barely break even and sometimes hold off on paying myself.

Hey man what's up? I was wondering if you can do a video on when and how to use a scraper on a window? I've started a business and I'm incorporating window cleaning in it and I just want to make sure I know when and how to use it.

I personally don't use them without a waiver. Go on Window Cleaning Resource Forum. Tons of info there. Also I have an Entire course called the Window Cleaning Blueprint Course. www.keithkalfas.com

My new philosophy is try to get them to say no to the initial price then let them haggle you down 20% to where you want them.

Well they are going to get a rude awakening when I raise the price from $95 to $140 to $150. It takes me 3x the time of a regular yard.

Good video and a lot of true points. I started out doing things way to inexpensively myself.... The only thing I would say is I disagree with your assertion that you can't do it on maintenance alone. If your profit numbers are right it's just a matter of volume. If you can get one crew profitable, why can't you make 5 Crews profitable and so on until you reach your desired financial goals. The key is to find the perfect method for your Market... Then it's just copy and paste

Crews are impossible to replicate for a small business owner. Load your video proving me wrong. To many lazy ass people that want a free ride. Self entitled pieces of crap this day that called herself people.

ROYAL LAWN CARE not at all impossible and hundreds of companies do it including myself. It's not easy and I share some of your frustrations with help but not all people are bad or lazy. I recommend hiring from outside of the industry and training people from the ground up. The key is systems for everything
