If the norm is mediocre work being done out there, a homeowner doing a mediocre install of their system is basically the same nowadays. Standards for “professionals” are much lower sadly it seems than it used to be out there. Homeowners constantly hear “I’m not going to reinvent the wheel here” or “it is what it is” as an excuse for poor workmanship and quality delivered. I would even say the average “truly mechanically inclined” homeowner is going to put in more effort to get their DIY system installed correctly because they own the home and have more at stake. The problem is most homeowners are not truly mechanically inclined or savvy as they think they are and get in over their heads. Greed and companies overstating themselves is the new norm. Most HVAC companies I’ve spoken to recently all say they are high quality, high value, which is why they are asking for high prices for installs and repairs. In reality only a handful of companies in each market actually deliver what they are selling. Good video Josh. Hopefully it sparks conversation.

I will install my own equipment next go around. I do all my own hvac repairs on my current systems. Tired of hacks and outrageous pricing.

I went through a 2 year, 11 core class program that included labs at our local community college. It was tough and I learned a lot that helped me understand why things work the way they do. Doing manual J calculations long hand is no fun!

That's pretty good but it takes lots of years to gain experience; so keep on studying and learning. These videos are extremelly valuable to learn!

…and the calculations were there to keep you paying tuition. The basic calculation can be learned in 30 minutes and then tell students to use digital and automated equipment…because that’s is real world. Pompous instructors and administrators are not serving the public. They are only creating DEBT for young students and families

This is a micro comment on the brazing pic: Keep the brazing rod away from the copper until you see that it’s ready to take it. The copper will melt and absorb the brazing rod as needed when it gets to the correct temperature. You shouldn’t preheat it bc it will throw off the effect. You can test it if you are unsure by touching it to the joint to see if it can melt and absorb it readily but then bring it away if it is taking more than a second or so…and keep adding in heat. If the copper can’t melt and pull in the joining metal you’ll have a leak/weak joint. Also, best to use staybrite 80 solder instead of braze. It has an incredible burst pressure, flows under a lot less heat so nitrogen is not needed just to avoid carbon, and you can literally use map gas!

That’s been my issue is the lack of being able to train where in the company I work for now. the training I get is just being tossed in the fire out in the field and then never getting to touch base on it more inside the warehouse whenit’s slower. Like I love that I help build this company for my boss when he was working pretty much out of his garage and we had no vans and we have a warehouse and 5 work vehicles now. I started off doing installs and have been for the last nine years but only been doing service for the last three and I feel I haven’t gotten better at my service work in the last year and a half two years. I’m 31 btw

I good HVAC company should offer a minimum of ONE hour a week for all the service personnel; every week. You may want to make a "suggestion" to the boss!

Some HVAC companies hire expert accountants in this business to show management and service personnel about overhead, profit/loss info. etc. which make employees realise not all income is pure profit!

I can't speak for every company...but a clown company I worked for hired this guy who literally looked like a meth junkie off the street...like he looked BAD. I don't care what anyone looks like, but I'm like how could the owner hire this guy thinking this was a good idea? This guy is going into someone's house representing your business...
