Hmmm... as a decades-long career logistics professional specializing in Customs and trade, I'm commenting on your comment about supporting companies who support US labor. People often overlook the millions of people employed in the logistics industry. Our numbers far exceed the numbers of manufacturing job gains, and many of these roles are high paying and/or union backed. What happens to us if we tip the balance too far the other way? That's not to say there shouldn't be US manufacturing, but the reality is that it costs less to make products using foreign labor. This is why Reagan encouraged the big labor migration of the early 1980s, with the auto sector taking much of their manufacturing offshore. Now, we lack the sophisticated infrastructure, and the investment to bring it back would be significant. Tariffs, in a normal world, are negotiated based on impact to US business. For example, because we want to protect our steel industry, there were already healthy tariffs on steel before 2016, and there were already additional tariffs on China by way of antidumping offset duties and limits on how much steel can be imported. Or....auto makers in the US often utilize triangular trades (parts from the US and overseas shipping to MX for subassembly build, which ships to US plant for auto assembly). The foreign content in the bill of material for the subassembly has to meet value constraints (along with other qualifying elements) if the auto maker is seeking reduced NAFTA tariffs. All of this, for me, means that the Trump tariffs are a bunch of drama meant to bamboozle the typical US consumer. It was working fine...don't mess with it. Last time he did this, he lost us the soybean markets and we are STILL subsidizing farmers as a result.

This guy who is a contractor that sales particular “contractor only” brands stating that DIY brands and other less known brands suck raises questions to me. Cutting out the middle man or middle men in a sales supply chain can always reduce cost and there are many components that are used in HVAC systems like the coils, pipes, fittings, pumps and electric components that are sourced from the same companies that the cheaper DIY companies use so some of this is BS. I worked at Whirlpool making cooktops and ovens, the highest level (Kitchen Aid), middle grade (Whirlpool), economy grade (Roper) and other company brands (Sears - Kenmore) were all made on the same production lines, a lot used the same metal, coatings, heating elements, glass, screws, hinges, etc… The higher end products had more bells and whistles, color options, Stainless steel covers, nicer knobs but used a lot of the same parts. Take this guys info with a grain of salt. Do you think that he would like the DIY mini split HVAC market to grow so his livelihood is diminished?

First, I’m not a contractor anymore and still feel the same way about this topic. Second, if some better companies with higher standards move into the DIY space, I’ll change my opinion. For now, most of companies producing DIY equipment are taking advantage of the ignorance of homeowners and how things actually work.

@ I bought a Carrier mini split as my brother in law was an HVAC contractor and then went to work for the Carrier company. I replaced a mini split with the “Name Brand” Carrier unit after I couldn’t get a computer board for a mini split that I bought years ago. A centipede crawled across and shorted out something on the board and it sucked that I couldn’t get that part for it. So I was able to get a Carrier brand mini split for a great deal however he stated that it was very likely that I wouldn’t be able to get parts for that model either as they tend to change the design and therefore models pretty frequently and they can’t or don’t offer a lot of replacement parts and most of the time you would likely have to buy a new outside unit vs replacing a bad computer board. On the flip side my 1st cousin is still an HVAC contractor now and he has mentioned that you can get parts for some of the Diken and Mitsubishi mini split units but in some cases the cost of the part could be nearing the price of some of the cheaper mini split units so in some cases he feels that it’s better to replace the complete mini split with a cheaper unit as even the so called better brands have issues as well and you can’t always tell which way is best for his clients to go with when their budget is really tight but they need A/C here in the South. Oh, another thing is my so called better Carrier unit has a very slow leak somewhere and has never not needed refrigeration top off every 12-15 months since it was installed but my lesser brand I had prior never had a problem until that centipede shorted out the computer board. In short, I have two different close family members that are in the HVAC business and some of my opinions have been shaped by their honest comments on which way to go when it comes down to getting your AC and heating going in a home. But I will go listen to your mini split video and see what examples you make of why the cheaper brands are so much worse than the dealer only brands.

I have 2 Senvilles Aura 18,000btu from 2016. Eastern Canada brrr. I heat the living room one at 22c all winter and the basement one at 18c. I get ice buildup outdoors everytime it snows so I set the living room one at AC 17c for a while and it melts the outside unit. The basement one though, since it's already only 17c in the vasement, never defrosts even if I do the AC trick. Today I set the basement temp to 24c Turbo and will see if the AC trick will work later today. Nice units, but looking for tips about that.

Some of the response have hit the nail on the head, it’s called American greed manufacturing has sent jobs overseas for more than 50 years under the guise of lower labor cost it’s BS. Manufacturing makes more money at the cost of jobs in America, companies contribute some of the profits into politics to obscure what’s happening it’s time to wake up.

It isnt an Opinion that tarriff pass on costs. It is a fact. Tarriffs are to be issued at the beginning 1980s to stop others from getting an unfair competition. China alteafy has the power, thus, the costs must go up. If an AC Cost 1k in 1980 and china wants to bring them in at $200 then you issue an $800 tarriff equalling the cost to slow the grow. When it is 5k there NOW, and 8K here, you buy there, now impose a 30% and your costs are forced at 8k period. Americans are so dumb

How can you say you are not political when you are directly talking about the actions and effects of a president? You mentioned Trump many more times than Biden. Unfortunately America has bigger fish to fry. Like making America a major producer of goods again and protecting its citizens from bad guys from outside of our borders and from inside of our borders. Our government has been going downhill for decades. And now because of that China has us by the balls and it’s going to take someone with balls to unclinch them. What you should be concerned about is the EPA and all its mandates that change the refrigerant every 5-10 years raising the cost of refrigeration equipment to astronomical costs. Sometimes you have to fight fire with fire. I’ve been in the hvac business for 24 years and government mandates are the worst cause of inflation in the hvac community. Also you can’t find anybody who wants to actually work anymore thanks to all the government handouts. There is much more to be concerned about than just tariffs.

If people think an HVAC system is costly now, once trumps tariffs take effect, the cost will double or more. It's not just a simple 25% it's 25% on in coming goods plus 25% for parts and more. Just wait until the mass deportations take effect. The cost of labor will jump a minimum of 50% or more in the coming months. Wait until Trump can't afford to buy a stake to impress his Maga friends. Even Elon Musk won't get his rockets off the ground by this time next year. We will be in the biggest recession our nation has ever seen in its history. We will all be able to personally thank Trump and his Maga Republicans for everything for trumps absolute stupidity and his tariffs... Thank you, Trumpsters.
