The energy of the wind is converted into electrical energy in the turbine's alternator through the aerodynamic forces applied by the wind to the rotating blades of the wind turbine. Therefore, aerodynamic calculations are important in wind turbines. Wind turbines, like most machines, are based on different energy recovery concepts.
People have been using the power of the wind to propel sailboats and propel ships for at least 5,500 years. Windmills have been used in Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan since the 7th century for irrigation and crushing grain.
In July 1887, Scottish Academician Professor James Blyth built the first wind-powered windmill and received a patent in England in 1891. In 1887-88 in the United States, Charles Francis Brush produced electricity using a mill that was larger and more engineered than James Blyth's mill. He provided electricity for his home and laboratory until 1900. Thanks to the experiments and research carried out in the wind tunnel on wind turbines by the Danish scientist and inventor Poul la Cour in the 1890s, a significant amount of knowledge was accumulated on the way to today's turbines. As of 2015, Denmark generated 40% of its electricity from wind, and at least 83 other countries around the world supplemented their electricity grids with wind energy.
In the 1970s, with the increasing search for energy sources other than fossil fuels and the pressure of environmental activists, the first modern wind turbines began to be produced in Denmark. These first wind turbines had a power of 20-30 kW. As of 2015, 7 MW wind turbines are being developed as prototypes, and the first applications have started to be made in various parts of Europe. Today, wind turbines are used in home gardens, parks, mini systems with battery storage; It has begun to be implemented at every scale, from medium-sized systems that provide electricity to factories and transfer the excess electricity they produce to the grid, to power plants that provide electricity to cities.
