I started with a good HSGI battle belt and built up from there. In my teenage years I played a lot of Paintball, and just got used to having stuff at my belt line and hips. Padded battle belts give you a really good bang for your buck, and you can start adding backpacks, or chest rigs over that. The... Thing I feel like people tend to neglect is how your gear needs to be comfortable. Try getting in a car with your chest rig, backpack and rifle. Try sitting down and standing up, try wearing it around the house while you're cooking dinner. Try going for a walk with and without it and see the difference in how hot you get. Combat is 90% boredom and 10% adrenaline, if you're worn out and beat from carrying tons of crap around all the time, you aren't helping yourself or anyone else. That' being said, i agree with the general premise here that it's a better investment to get a skick carrier and plates that are multipurpose, i disagree (probably naively) that as prepared citizens we're going door kicking beyond a last resort.

In our variety of training, that was the only time I could ever imagine wanting the pistol instead of an extra rifle mag or two.

I only run two weapons plat forms, 5.56 and 7.62x51 so if I need long range or more of a lightweight more ammo situation I can just grab and go. Also I rarely use armor, for trekking through the woods or mountains or in high altitude or deserts I don’t see the point. If I had to be in a gun fight I am going to be well over 100 yards away, shooting then breaking contact to get far away. For backpacks I HIGHLY recommend hiking packs such as the Osprey Kestrel 38L. Osprey along with many other brands distribute the weight properly so there's never any weight on your shoulders. I've used a handful of ultralight packs that use dyneema fabric to shed weight but I'm always coming back to Osprey because they're so damn comfortable with loads between 20-35llbs.

If your backpack has a strip of nylon running down the shoulder straps, you can add a quick release buckle to it and just snap on a placard to it
@fubar12173 ай бұрын
OR....if your pack straps use buckles, you can clip them straight into the buckles on a placard. I'm able to do that with a Direct Action Dust or Ghost into a Hailey chest rig. The male/female ends of the buckles all work out perfectly. The top of the straps go into the top buckles on the chest rig (I guess placard since the harness is removed) and the bottom of the straps go into the side buckles on the chest rig/placard.
@SilentKnight6002 ай бұрын
Great video. I liked a lot of the ideas you talked about and I completely agree about backpacks. I don't think often enough we talk about what we are doing while we are wearing our kits. People too often get tied up in what is said not as what is meant in the phrase train how you fight. Even though I fall more into the placard route. Because I can just use it as a quick swap for whatever gun I am currently running. Most of my kit always works the same and can run radios and other things like that near my sides. That way I can keep immediate access medical radios or whatever else I might need to keep on my person. I can also do that in a low-vis or max utility format relatively quickly. The placard gives you of the ability to have a handful of placards set up to what your use case is. You can also have secondary build-off points like what you brought up with the Velcro on the front where you can just quick add a part to that. I also love the fact that you brought up that a backpack should be left mostly empty so you can throw stuff in it or use it as is necessary. That's why I love the idea of dump pouches but if you've ever worn them and went through foliage they're kind of a bastard. I would also like to add I don't like the idea of keeping medical in your bag. Extra medical like boo boo kits or a first aid kit makes sense. But the great thing about backpacks is you can unmarry yourself from them. You can stash gear if you need to move quicker or need to be able to lift or move something. So being without medical at least immediate aid medical seems like a bad idea. Or at least like you're taking away one of the best pros of having a backpack. I would also add the advice that you can always keep a bandolier with stretchy straps or whatever other mounting system you like on the top of your backpack or inside the top of your backpack so you have quick access to it and can use it for extra ammo storage that way you keep it off of your stomach. This prevents you from entering the use case where you struggle with bending over or going prone. You can typically fit about 90 rounds in front and be able to maneuver just fine. You can also use it for low viz if you have an overshirt. I think a good backpack is a great choice. Mystery ranch makes some great stuff so does vertex. I use their overlander as my STHF or general purpose bag and it does phenomenally. I think it's actually the best bag on the market for a 50 l bag in the regards to what we're talking about. However I think the idea of using a duffel bag for this is extremely horrible lol. I know you guys know what you're talking about obviously but you have to remember who your audience is. Yes for a quick grab and go it'll work fine. But even in that use case you're probably not packing your stuff correctly and duffel bags are completely unsupported in both regards to the structure of the bag and against your back. Which means you run a high risk of damaging equipment damaging the bag and possibly damaging yourself. Also if you've ever hyped any bit of distance with an unsupported back/packed your bag wrong you get how miserable that gets and how quickly it gets there. So I think duffel bags are an absolute no-go unless you have no other choice and then yeah they work better than using your hands. Also another tip. There are companies that make nod adapters for things like beanies., They also make counterweights that you can press together through your beanie so they quickly attach and keep your head balanced. You can obviously use skull crushers with but those suck And there are some good adapters that can go either over top of a beanie or be permanently installed that still provide support and if you're using an oversized beanie you can roll it over the cover and it looks normal. They are also surprisingly somehow better than the skull crushers. I've only just started experimenting with them but they make for an interesting option if you have nods and don't want to walk around looking like you're in battle rattle Also also I f****** adore the idea of keeping extra bits for your specific rifle. I carry around a multi-tool specifically built for ARs but there's no reason I couldn't throw in an extra bit set so that I can cover other guns in my group besides that. That is one of those simple things that some people (myself) just don't think about and I think it's phenomenal advice Also also also for the comments about being able to ditch armor. They make rigid airsoft armor that's dirt cheap and you can put in and still have the full utility of your chest rig with only a handful of ounces heavier than empty weight. It also keeps stuff off your chest and back which is nice. I know we all have a crippling addiction to ordering things online. So if you don't have enough money for an airsoft rig take a bunch of cardboard and cut it up to shape and then attach it and put it in your rig. Doesn't work quite as well but it will definitely still work and keep stuff off of you while keeping your rig mostly rigid
@SilentKnight6002 ай бұрын
Yeah after reading that back that's kind of an all over the place mess. My main points were sustainment should be based out of a backpack. You can make the placard thing work by keeping it thin and if you do add wings you can tie them down if you want to go over the top or as you said Velcro works well as well. Also if you are handy with a needle there's a lot you can do. I also think sustainment should be based out of the backpack and not based off of the rig. I think we have a habit of making rigs way way too big and then you are stuck with that stuff for an entire movement or whatever your mission set is. And finally I do like chest rigs but in terms of economics I think placards make way more sense and they take up way less space. One slick rig which I think is a phenomenal suggestion by the way. With Velcro on the front and three or four sets of placards will get you extremely far. If on the inside of the bands you sew in pouches for things like radios, medical, or whatever else is going to stay on each kit. And then on the off chance you don't use it you can just leave it empty or put something like water in it, which works well for cold environments. And if you need to unmarry from your armor you can always use rigid airsoft armor or use your crippling internet ordering addiction to make cardboard armor.

I was watching it and thinking "Huh, seems like it would make more sense to divorce armor and LBE so you can scale up or down". Glad to see that I was not the only one to have the thought, and I totally agree with all your points. For prepared civilians this is the way as you can adjust your covert to overt level without much headache. Now, granted this makes less sense for an organized military force, as there the SOPs and equipment is standardized. You're not worrying about swaping to different platforms or having to go from blending in to being ready for a firefight. But, that's also not the target audience of this video either.

This system is more flexible, smaller and you can use it as a law enforcement officer, member of the military or as a civilian. In case of a civil situation this system is more low vis as a chestrig. You can wear it under a jacket, with or without a plate carrier. The velcor on the back of the panel is just for more grip.

I learn a while back that trying to get chest rigs like Haley Strategic X Chest Rig, Heavy Chest Rig and Velocity System UW Chest Rig Gen IV which allows the user to go from Four AR15 Mags, Four AR10 or Four AK mags. Since I have increased the number of rifles and I also wanted to have dedicated Chest Rigs for each rifle I own getting both Surplus USMC TAP Rigs for setup for Designated Marksman and Shotgun Breacher with a Rifleman Combat load. I have also added two Eagle H-Harness and set them up in a similar matter to the way NAVY SEALs used before and after Sept 11, 2001. I have also purchased a couple of Original SOE Shotgun Micro Rigs for my Beretta 1301 Tactical Mod 2 that I have customized and one Lever Action Micro Rig for my SW1854 44mag rifle. Setting up H-Harness with Twin Double M4 Mag Pouches it also allows them to be use with AR10 Mags. The H-Harness is a great choice when you want to have a Rig that is extremely modular and can also be used over a clean plate carrier. All this Rigs are allot better than the Assault Vest Type units that I used during my time in the US NAVY while serving in a Security Squadron that had both RIB Boats and Helicopter Assets and we used a custom order Vest unit from London Bridge Trading Company from VA Beach VA. similar to Blackhawk Omega Elite Vest but much more heavier duty that our Parachute Riggers added harnesses onto the Vest for EVAC and also had emergency floatation and allowed us to carry up to 6 M4 Magazines and 3 Pistol magazines plus had pouches for extra gear like lights, flash bang and radio but these vest were done for us back in 2004-05 and I ended up giving mine to a buddy that was heading to the sandbox when I was transferring out to another command.

Lumbar packs would make great food/medical/comms packs since they're usually for comfort while hiking long distances which is a context where you'd be more in need of those types of extras. So a three-part system of chest-rig, backpack, and lumbar pack hits all the contexts without need for any shuffling of gear. Adding attachments for the lumbar pack to connect to the chest rig to help hold it up (like suspenders) could be a good option to tighten things up.

I recently moved to New England, and decided to invest in a more appropriate hunting rifle. A Ruger American in .300blk ended up being a great pick for me because the mags/ammo are compatible with my .300blk 10.5 AR and I can swap suppressor between both platforms easily. Plus, a suppressed .300blk bolty is just stupid fun to plink with.

The standard issue fighting load carrier for the army is usually around $20. If you take the clip in the front and flip it around so it clips on the back, then do up the zipper you have a ton of realistate for molle attachments on the front and sides. That also leaves the back free for a pack.

I’ve switched over my daily load out to fit this style of thinking. I used to have a safe life carrier with all the pouches directly attached and it was bulky and hard to store In my truck. So I stripped the vest completely so it’s low vis and stores easy in my truck and made my own chest rig prototype to throw over it similar to a tap rig. So far I’m very pleased with the combo and I’m looking to potentially make and sell these chest rigs in the near future.

Taps, LBV, and my personal recommendation, the Helikon Tex Guardian can all be configured to take various sized magazines. For instance, cut out the divider in the guardian and it can now take 308 mags in addition to already accepting AR/AK. My point is that a well configured chest rig can do it all for you. Sure, you have to switch out all your stuff in the pockets if you're changing platforms but for ballers on a budget, don't feel like you need a chest rig per. Also, you don't have to fill up every pouch. Being able to plus up/down is nice but we tend to look at open space as needing to be filled - it doesn't.

Specifically with the issue of swapping out mag pouches all the time, I made a super cheap solution that can turn any plate carrier or rig with a kangaroo type pouch. rather than buying an insert for it with all the bungie cords and separated containers, I 3d printed a plastic insert that can hold any mag through tension. works with 5.56, .308, 9mm, even funky p90 mags. If you want to do this, all you gotta do is make a hollow rectangle with the dimensions of your kangaroo pouch thats a nice tight fit for your largest mag, wrap some cloth around it so it doesnt scratch up your mags and adds extra tension, and shove it in the kangaroo pouch. Make sure that the insert is less than 3 inches tall, it helps with flexability and leaves plenty of room

The Spiritus Spud Pouch is my best friend for making any of my plate carriers or chest rigs Modular 😤

Regarding the placards. Buy the Beez Sidewings system. You can build out a chest rig, and switch out placards.

Im a big fan of Shaw concepts. Both their inserts and ARC suite. A modular placard that can scale up to a chest rig with wings in seconds.

Tbh, soft armor with a placard and a pistol caliber PDW under a flannel sounds really good. That and a small bug out duffel bag might be my ideal low-vis vehicle load out

This is where cutting costs is hard, but Mystery Ranch is awfully hard to beat. I have so many different sizes for different tasks...from camping to larping to training.

Underrated but old school idea, run a molle mesh assault vest or FLC or similar LBV over a low vis carrier for even more carrying and fighting capacity then even a chest rig, plus you can get all mesh breathable ones with no material blockage, easy to unbuckle, unzip upfront on and off, can run them as a breathable light split rig.

Being "prepared" for most any situations is the bane of the idea, especially in utilizing the real estate you have on your carry gear

Have definitely leaned more towards low-vis/low-key stuff the last 10 years. Overt or Covert; you just have to be realistic about your capabilities and expectations.

Here's a thought on a low vis get home loadout: Vertx or other brand clutch belt for edc pistol, mags, other goodies, medical fanny, vertx commuter sling with armor, mech-tech rifle conversion for edc pistol, high vis safety vest to cover clutch belt gear and to look like a construction worker, bluetooth range ear buds instead of large ear pro headsets, maybe a in-hat universal bump cap insert. ect.

I got a GCS Warrior Chest Rig in the Air Force tiger stripe which I dyed Brown, I also zip tied on some three mag Alice pouches to hold my .308 magazines, there's some medical on there and a dump pouch. Also, I use a concealable plate carrier from tactical scorpion gear. About $70-80 for all of it. I'm a buba running a century arms c308 and my camo is m81 woodland.

For budget stuff a British PLCE, SADF P83 Battle Jacket (a little wonky with AR mags but doable) o just an old US LBV are hard to beat. If the LBV has belt loops on the bottom than adding water, food, and medical to the back and sides is a breeze while the front is all about ammunition.

The 3 mag standard thing is absolutely crazy to me. That is not enough for ANYTHING outside of larping. A basic combat load is the BASIC combat load you should have at a MINIMUM. Period. 210 rounds. Minimum. Full stop

I'm waiting in the P84.v2. I dont have an AK or a 308 gun, but the ability to run those mags in the pouches is pretty appealing because id like to get a 308 in the future.

Low vis is the way to go and the modularity of a setup helps to keep costs low. Although the point of train as you fight stands out here bc if you have to much load outs you have to train with too much gear. So stay simple
@krypticsouls68113 ай бұрын
You can also get a blank molle placard and slap on pouches and it will translate to a lot of other tactical gear you run.

I like the Modular gear myself because 90% of the time, I want it plain and clean under a flannel, sweater or jacket. SHTF, I want to look like a civ most of the time. If I need to get in the woods I want a split rig and a backpack. The only time I really want a plate carrier full of mags and shit is range day. I never plan on being an attacker as an honest citizen. I do t have the training or firepower crew to attack anyone my split system can’t handle. The mag in the gun and belt is more than enough as a civilian defender unless true civ war breaks out. In that case, there will be dead bodies to pull gear off.

I use this setup in cold weather environments... i wear a slick carrier under my jacket and a chest rig over the jacket that way if the jacket needs to come off its easier to unclip just my rig than it is to unclip the rig and slick carrier just to get the jacket off or on..

My second adaptation of running gear comprises of a First Spear slick plate carrier and a TAG 6 magazine chest rig. Very light weight.

Placards are pretty effective in this situation. Though I do like role specific rigs personally. But the placards are really challenging that methodology for me personally.
@paulmorang83403 ай бұрын
What I’ve come up with… 1st Line (EDC or “battle belt”) -Handgun -Handgun mags 2nd Line: Chest Rig/PC (tactical, hunting, backpacking, etc) -Mission -Navigation -Comms -Tourniquet Line 3A: Ruck Lid (Can be removed from ruck and worn as Fanny pack/sling bag) -TQ & IFAK (moved to cargo pocket for any context) -Sustainment for 12 hours Line 3B: Ruck (lives in truck toolbox so that anywhere I go, I can live out of it) -Sustainment for >12 hours I’m not going to carry any 2nd line gear with me. Maybe a hill people gear rig to put my EDC in to be easier to carry my ruck with the waist straps and a Garmin In-Reach. I want my GPS & radio in a faraday bag when not in use, I don’t want to carry a rifle in my truck to get stolen, or have to get out and take it with me just for the sake of not leaving it when maybe it’s too overt for the situation.

At 12:40, you are discussing long range accoutrements. That's great info. Every damn time I hear the word 'accoutrement', I think of the movie "Winnebago Man". A 2009 documentary movie that is seriously hilarious to watch. Check it out when you can. There are lots of KZbin short clips to give you the flavor of the humor. No kids. Hard R rating.

Search "Winnebago Man" for the KZbin video titled The Definitive Winnebago Man. A 7:28 video. At the 4:22 mark is his rant about 'accoutrement'. It's better when you you watch the whole 85 minute movie. 'Accoutrement' is forever etched in my brain from this movie. Enjoy.

Bandoleers are cheaper than chest rigs. If you keep your general stuff on your 1 LBV/chest rig/plate carrier, and your weapon specfic stuff in a bandoleer or 2, you can save a ton of $. $5-15/ea for surplus bandoleers, depending on how lucky you are, and provided you run somthing that fits in GI surplus bandoleers.
