1st - love your channel. 2nd, I'm a newbie and bought one of their spider bass guitars because I wanted a Thunderbird look without paying Thunderbird prices. To be fair, I can't complain too much about the fit and finish for what it cost. And to my inexperienced hands the neck is fairly comfortable and the bass itself is fairly comfortable to play: while sitting down. It weighs a ton and I can't imagine someone standing on stage with this thing for 2 hours over on their shoulder! But even my newbie ears can tell that the electronics are horrible (tone knob is almost worthless) and the pickups are noticeably inferior to my Gretsch $299 beginner bass. And Gretsch's fit and finish are far superior. I have to almost double whatever volume I'm playing at whenever I plug in the Hard Luck King. And, yes, it buzzes unless your fingers are on the strings. The thing that galls me in particular though however is that I emailed them to tell them how pleased I was with the instrument. I told him that I was interested in one of their Explorer body shapes they currently don't have in bass guitar and if they can make one. I received a one line reply, not acknowledging that I just spent hundreds of dollars with them or that I'd contacted them to praise their product. It was just a terse reply saying, "Yeah we'll think about that." I won't be buying anything from them again.
@LowEndLobster3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Gene! That's a bummer about your experience, especially that reply. Those Gretsch jet basses are no slouch either, great beginner instruments. Will be checking one out soon hopefully :)

Not too bad. The body finishing is a bit blocky. I'm not sure totally....but most of the hardware appears to be Fender. It's all black with maple fretboard...sort of Geddy Lee-ish. In fact it's got Geddy's signature on the back of the headstock??.....but the neck measurement specs match a P bass and not a jazz.... So who knows? I think you're right. That's how I try to approach instruments. I see folks say that you can replace this and that and this and that, but at the end of the day you'll drop hundreds of dollars on a shitty bass to make it less shitty.. It's like dropping $10k to mod your $500 Chevy Cavalier. I like to look at instrument through the eyes of someone who buys a bass to be "their" instrument. Once you pass the honeymoon phase where an instrument is "perfect" in your eyes, the flaws become visible and I try to point those out in an objective manner from the point of view of a "bassist's bassist" and a human being. Hardluck Kings should learn from Squier. My $200 Squier Short Scale Jaguar sounds _way_ better and probably feels _way_ more comfortable than this for much less money. I understand that Hardluck Kings probably doesn't have nearly as many resources as Fender, but if they're going to compete in this extremely competitive market, they must at least produce a decent product. AIO Guitars creates some really cool designs (e.g. their Tele bass and Wolf bass) which, despite not being as good of a deal as other bigger companies, are still worth considering if you want a good bass that looks or sounds a little more unique. And if Hardluck Kings is just trying to make a marketing play, then they're doomed: They'll be crushed by Squier and Sire, which are two of the world's favorite budget-friendly bass brands.
@LowEndLobster4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I think they're going for the quick buck rather than making serious instruments. There are much better instruments from Squier, Sterling, and Ibanez that are in the 2-300 dollar price range and are much better.

The truss rod is too tight and the torx wrench that came with won't even fit into the adjustment nut. Build quality is exactly like the $59 P-Bass I bought on a lark from the Wish website, only that one played better. Sloppy routing and build quality, finish flaws. A 'B'-stock Glarry at 1/3 of the price kicks this bass's butt. I could live with the baseball bat neck and "dick" inlays if the rest wasn't such cheap crap. Won't even bother plugging it in. This brand kind of has the vibe of musical instruments made from parts from a recycle bin... and the only reason the numbers are limited is they only have so many spare parts. They honestly seem significantly worse than the instruments assembled at the Chinese factory they get their parts from, not only that, but while some of the guitars have a charm or style, they all kind of look like they spray painted over an otherwise normal instrument. Suckers who buy stuff off of facebook ads...Speaking of.. I got this hat one time from a facebook ad that was way overpriced but I was a little uhh "loopy" and bought it anyways... anyways, the hat came like 2 months later and was like childrens size. It's actually the hat I wear in a brief scene of my Tiger King spoof music vid I did early on in the channel.
