Sire U5 Review: • Sire U5 Short Scale Re...
Hey Everyone! Today we're revisiting one of my favorite short scales from Sire, the U5! This capable little bass provides a great set of tones while also providing the player with a familiar playing experience in a short scale package. It's been over two years since I reviewed this bass originally. How does it stack up? Let's find out!
This bass and all my other basses with rounds are strung with SIT Foundation Nickel Plated Stainless Steel 45-105(125) unless otherwise noted. Check them out at sitstrings.com/

Thanks for this newer video on the U5. I am in my early 70's and have played bass guitar ever since I bought a 62 jazz bass and bassman amp in 1964. As an old geezer, I currently play Stingray 5's and they are now a bit heavy. I had a Sire V7 5 a few years ago and it was an excellent bass but weighed over 11 lbs and had too many damn knobs so I sold it-I much preferred the 5 way switch on the Stingrays where I could quickly and predictably change tones instead of fiddling with knobs which is unprofessional at gigs. I saw your first video on the Sire U5 and ordered one and waited months way past when they were supposed to be in stock but never came in. The Sire U5 is backordered NOW in all colors and not available to buy. I don't know how it would be going from a powerful active 5 Stingray HH to a short scale passive bass but I sure would like to shave a couple of pounds off my shoulder and I think this is a pretty cool little bass. Shaving a contour on the body where my right arm would rest on the body is a no brainer as well as lightweight tuners. I have also heard that the figured top on the natural and sunburst finish is paper thin. Thanks, Lobster.

Pro tip guys; short scales are the ducks nuts for pit work. Most musicals, you're rarely going above 12th fret and can usually get away with a 4 string. The shorter scale is easier on your hands, and lighter on your shoulder for those longer shows Also no one can judge you for playing a baby bass in the dark

Yea which ones? ;-) The La Bella Mustang flat wound through the body length (La Bella 760F-MUS Deep Talkin' Bass Stainless Steel Flat wound Scale Bass Guitar Strings - .043-.104 Light Short Scale Through Body) were too long as U5 body insert string end barrel stops go in deeper than the Fender Mustang almost to the surface and La Bella 760FL-S Bass Deep Talkn Flatwnd Short Scale 43-104 Lt strings are not made for through body so had to run them straight through on top like the U5 came stock. Really like the La Bella flats best but bummed I couldn't run them through the body. U5 needs it's own through string length to use La Bella's flats it seems.

I’ve had a U5 ever since your first review and love it. I got the Tobacco Sunburst version - never really liked the blue one. The only thing I didn’t like were the strings it came with. I put LaBella flats on - top loaded. I’m not young or small, in fact just the opposite on both counts. I wish people wouldn’t say shorty scale basses are just for the young and small - they are ideal, but I love the compact size. I do play guitar as well so I suppose the size is part of the attraction. But no one would know from the sound it makes…

Hey there, I Really like U5 from what you shown in your videos and how versatile it is, but I am a bit in a conundrum here, maybe you can help? I am looking for my first bass and I can't decided between the Sire U5 or Squire vintage P-bass 40 anniversary. I am mainly looking for a P bass with some versatility hence U5 got my eye, I also like its size but I am worried a bit if a short scale is good for a beginner. I do also worry a bit that the loser strings of a short scale might mess my learning, since I do like to dig in to the strings. I am also interested if Sire U5 has a good P-Bass sound overall. Kind Regards Rokas
@Waggel86
@Waggel86 Жыл бұрын
There's nothing wrong with a short scale. It produces less higher harmonics compared to a full scale bass, so it sounds a tad more thumpy. If you want crystal clear highs a full scale is probably best. String tension is easily solved with some thicker strings. Note that because of the higher tension on bass vs a guitar, the risk of stress induced injury is higher. It's better to play light with extra volume on the (pre)amp. Always play with amplification. Solid body basses tend to be quiet acoustically. You'll compensate by playing harder which leads to injuries. As a guitar player turned bassist I found the transition from 25,5" to 34" to not be that bad. Yes, there is some stretching but it isn't nearly as bad as I feared. So if that's something keeping you from full scales, you might want reconsider. It will certainly give you more models to choose from. As for P vs PJ. Personally I run my PJ either P solo'ed or both on full. My J is rather subtle so messing with half or three quarter volumes isn't worth it , YMMV though.

@@Waggel86 Thanks for your reply, I am not only interested in short scales but U5 did cough my eye a lot, the only issue is there is none of them close to me for trying out in person or any Sires at all. I guess I just wanted to find out should I go for a Full length Squier P or this short scale since the squier was one I could try and also like somewhat. But I just keep hearing from some people that squier is trash and that Sire is really good for the money. Plus lobster has now two videos of this bass parsing it. So I just wanted to see what he thinks would be a good choice. But thank you for your advice, I am personally leaning twords the Full length squire. Sire U5 atleast in this video kinda had a metal buzzy sound to it, but maybe its because its new strings ?

If you're a normal sized adult, I would go with a full 34" scale bass. That being said, I would go to your nearest guitar shop and try both short & long scale. That's assuming they have a short scale. For me, it's definitely 34" but my 10 year old daughter prefers short scale (with light gauge strings for better string tension).

I bought a cheap short scale Mitchell bass from Guitar Center during the Black Friday sale. It's probably sacrilege to say, but I'm actually finding myself playing this little short scale bass more than my standard length basses. It's just so much more comfortable to play and I don't really find myself noticing much difference in the tone. I have a ten inch handspan so it's not like the size of a larger guitar is necessarily a problem but when I can cover 6 frets with a little microshift it makes playing a breeze.

Overall length I can't get since I'm on vacation, BUT I can tell you spacing at the bridge is 19mm as most fender style 4 strings are. I have one and if I string it through the body, I use medium scale strings. It works great

How is the tension of the low B string on a short-scale bass? Wouldn't it be floppy & go out of tune often???
@Ronofthedead07

@@jugglerj0eplenty of 5- and 6-string short scales exist, but the good ones tend to be quite expensive. So…there seems to be a way to get a good B on a short scale…

Might be cool if you tuned it EADGB with light gauge strings. Tuned standard, I imagine that low B would be flopping around like a hooked fish.

If you lose track of the fact you are doing a video and start improvising on the patterns pretty quickly, it's easy to know it will be a good review ;)

Welp, got mine after you reviewed it. Traded it for a player mustang, bought it back, put some flat wounds. My only regret is I got the tobacco burst one with maple top instead of mint one. Also, would you care to test the fretless version? I was trying to get my hands on a replacement fretless neck, but no luck in the part of the world I live in.

I've a mint green one like this; ok, good sound and finish but bad ergonomics... no rounded body (suffering forearm) and neck dive. 👎🏻

Our fellow bass players of the female persuasion might like the powder blue on this one. That being said, you don't see many of our lady comrades sporting basses with girly colours.

At least all the sire slobberfest content breaks up the Harley Benton slobberfest content. Love you, Lobster, but except for the fender gold foil update you’ve become stale. How about just 10 minutes of you playing on a fretless? No talking, just being creative? I’d watch that. Your joy with the fretless is beautiful and infectious and your playing goes up about a dozen notches. ❤
