There is something to be said for mature technology. I also think there is a bit of an aspect to it of the P-Bass defining what a bass should sound like, so the P-Bass always sounds like a good bass.

I like the fact that mostly inexpensive instruments are in the top 3 (except for Darkglass Stingray). I ordered a Sire u5 and told a 2 week wait-that was over 4 months ago. Yeah, I would have probably gotten a Sire by now if not for the supply issues. Not many companies offer a fretless P bass, and Sire has one such option for the P5, though I just can't bring myself to buy one if I don't know WHEN exactly I'll get it.

I absolutely agree with your choice on the Spector. I was drooling over that bass when it came out and had my money to slap down on it. But after playing it I noticed the same issue with the preamp. Plus the finish on the bass (black with red highlights in the grain) was wearing off onto my clothing and right hand. Normally I wouldn’t mind electronics being sub par as I mod almost every bass I get my hands on but typically those basses are half the price or less than that Spector.
@Maht252 жыл бұрын
I've owned a Legend 4 (from about 2010, as they change between years) and a Euro 4LX. I love Spector a ton, but it feels like the NS Pulse series are just fancified Legends. I couldn't recommend a Euro LX more, but the Tone-Pump JR is just a weird preamp and the full Tone Pump is certainly much better because of the trim pot. For those reading, if you like the Pulse, just get a Legend, or spring a little more for their higher-tier'd lines with improved electronics.

I was heartbroken over the RSD basses :( I really love the sound of Sadowskys but was always put off because of the price, even the Japanese-made ones are quite expensive. When I saw those come out I knew they won't be perfect since they're made in China, but given the fact that they're made in the same factory as the Rockbass Warwicks and that there are definitely some good basses made in China (like Dingwall), I was eager to hear what reviewers other people say. Hopefully one day they will get them properly...

As soon as I find a clean used Charvel SanDimas IV cheap enough. I'd buy it and rip the preamp out, replace the controls with passive CTS pots & a pickup selector, and shield it too. The stock DiMarzio pickups are solid as is the bass, so it would be a simple mod.

I have a 2021 RSD Verdine White model, and its dead quiet, Lightweight, and build quality was very similar to the my 2007 Japanese Metro and 2018 Japanese made Metro Express. I DID need to add the VTC, as its really needed. Cost was $99 from warwick USA out of TN. Made all the difference. Now the pre sounds just like it should. The bass is my primary gigging bass, and I'm very satisfied. It feels, sounds, plays and looks like a Sadowsky, at a third of the cost of a german manufactured metro. I'm glad to see the quality issues are getting sorted.

The worst bass guitar I ever had was my first one. It was a Harley Benton jazz bass, their cheapest model. It was otherwise quite nice, it had a rock solid alder body but its electronics were very poor and neck bent out of shape quite quickly. Still it did not kill my enthusiasm to learn bass so I played it nevertheless it was in bad shape. But I was just a beginner who could not finetune the instrument let alone set the intotanion. I have noted that Harley Benton instruments have improved from what they were back in 2000. The best bass guitar I ever had, and have, is a Yamaha TRBX. I have earlier struggled between Squier Jazz and Precision basses, liked Jazz bass neck better than Precision's but wanted the sound of a Precision. That Yamaha is perfect for me. It combines somewhat the necks of j and p and has p-ups of both. Of course it has sentimental value because my girlfriend bought it for me, but that cannot be counted here..

Very interesting! Really, all three of the ‘worst basses’ were potentially great basses, that didn’t deliver what they should have, for the price range. I like that. Conversely, the ‘Top 3’ killed on the “bang-for-the-buck” ratio. Sire is gonna have to build another factory - they’ve been discovered! Thanks for another excellent review, Lobster! ❤️😷🎸
@michaelgottlieb90832 жыл бұрын
Agreed. The Sadowskys had issues but are great mod/upgrade platforms. The build quality, hardware, ergonomics are actually excellent. The weak link is the electronics which could be updated fairly easily with OEM Sadowsky pickups and preamp. I have 3 hybrid 5’s at the moment in various stages of being upgraded. Granted, for the money you should have to do it. The upside is, I was able to purchase them at 30-40% off. Which makes upgrading them more doable. The Sadowskys do have a certain mojo that I like and a sick slap tone.

A absolutely love my Charvel San Dimas, I don't use the preamp, always pull passive and turn vol down a bit - using the amp eq to turn the treble down - might invest in a passive tone control pedal at some point - I have the Sadowski bass/treble boost preamp pedal - might do the Darkglass mod sometime. Hey LL, just a quick word regarding the three of you bashing the Harley Benton Marquess design. I note that you and your colleagues had nothing bad to say about the tonal properties and playability of the bass. Just the design. Please take a look at the Marleaux Consat bass. Very similar to the Marquess and 10+ times the cost. Yet there is a market for it. While certainly not meant for mass appeal I for one am very happy with mine and am grateful that the folks at Thomann went out of their way to make this design available to those of us without 3-5K $$ for a Marleaux.

With all due respect.... You named a bunch of great stuff about the Charvel, and ONE thing makes it the abosulute WORST? The EASIEST thing to fix on any instrument is electronics. The playability, hardware, fretwork, fit and finish and comfort is the HARDEST to accomplish and the bass absolutely MURDERED every other bass in the video. You MUST have something you adore about it, because you did 4-5 videos on it, and you never got rid of it. It's a PHENOMENAL bass, with a simple to fix flaw. I personally own that exact model, and if you set it up properly (any bass needs set up right) and my bass doesnt have that buzz. You found one thing, and panned the entire bass for it. The Sire had the same issues you said about the charvel, (upgrade the electronics and pickup misses LOW END? ON A BASS) but its on your best list. The Guild is like playing a refrigerator on your lap and does ONE tone well. Hardly a "best" of anything. Try harder next time. These basses varied so widely that there simply is no comparing and rating them against each other.

I have the Behringer BD1. It's amazing for the price. It can really put the sound of a bass out front in a mix or live performance. I've had it for years, with zero issues.
