Second Contact sounds much more involved that First Contact. While FC gets you in the door, SC forces you to get to know the people on the other side of said door. What if 'Lower Decks' is a cartoon created in the Star Trek universe around the time of post-TNG? It's an animated comedy created by an ex-Starfleet ensign who resigned to follow his true calling; writing a comedy. He based his comedy off of his personal experience as someone who worked on the "lower decks." This would mean that the events depicted on the TV show are not canon, but the TV show existing in the Star Trek universe is canon. We aren't just watching Star Trek, we're watching a TV show that exists in Star Trek. This is why Star Trek doesn't necessarily need to be canon.

Regarding canon, I slot it in with TOS. Given that TOS was made in the late 1960s the design is not "retro" - that would require TOS to be made recently with the express intent to create an aesthetic of the 1960s Scifi. I would call it "minimalist". And it does fit well into the franchise given that it started the whole thing. TNG, DS9, Voy are extensions of TOS and use designs meant to be 100 years in the future of TOS. The only show that does not fit into the Prime Timeline because of design choices is Discovery. It is meant to be set 10 years before TOS, yet has a completely different design aesthetic.

Remember that during the Dominion War the Federation lowered its standards for entry into Starfleet and also lowered its standards for joining the Federation entirely because they needed bodies. This type of show seems like a logical consequence of a post-war environment where you have a ship full of much less qualified individuals who are goofing off and horribly misusing the replicators and holodecks. That would easily justify how a crew like this could fit in the Canon of the show. Basically, they just squeezed in and now they can't be fired so Starfleet just put them all in one place and assigned to a mission where the damage they can potentially cause is minimal.
@tenchraven4 жыл бұрын
This looks like it has the same relation to canon, aka "the official Star Fleet story", that Stripes or Private Benjamin or any other military farce does to the actual military. Half the Fleet would get butt hurt because it exists, and the other half would piss themselves laughing, convinced that it is about it something that really happened on their ship. Watching this requires the same kind of mndset that watching Orville did- take it as an in-universe entertainment show and you'll be fine. It might not even be something in general circulation, but a parody created by "Ensign X" deployed aboard the "USS Neva Herdavite", and passed around in "secret" within the Fleet. And with that mindset, you can even take Voyager at face value- a dramatization by Tom Paris, based on the official Star Fleet history. No, don't question the accuracy of that declassified history, Citizen, you can believe Paris, because he was there!

So far I agree with most of what you say about the show, though I’m not a fan of the art style as I feel Trek is one of those series that does deserve a more unique style then just having one repeated from a different show (though I suppose it does look cleaner which I guess is good enough?). Only other issue I have is the ship really and how off putting it is. Of course I do agree that is the type of ship that arrives after the actual first contact, it really doesn’t look like a good ship design wise with how fragile it looks. Even in regard to background unimportant ships we’ve seen in Trek, they tended to look more put together overall. But these are just nitpicks I’m sure I’ll get use to overtime, overall I hope the show turn out good.

It looks more Trek than STD and STP. So if this is soft trek, what does that make those?

To me, the Cerritos looks like a steamrunner with its nacelles detached from the body and placed on pylons.

I think this is like a Miranda class, I don’t think it’s a new class all!!!! I think it’s an older class probs one of the last ones built. Old style saucer and deflector dish. Starfleet moved away from galaxy class style saucers. also I love the idea and the personality of the cat doctor...... the really passive aggressive insulting personality. also if you like constant sarcasm and one liners like veep then you’ll like this I think as that’s the style of humour.

sair-EE-tose... it's Spanish. No it's not canon. It's a cartoon, just like TAS (where only bits and pieces were ever officially canonized, and for good reason). Everyone just needs to relax and enjoy. Don't ask to treat it as canon or not. Make your own choice!

Anyone else getting a bit of a “Red Dwarf if the radiation leak had never happened and instead we followed Lister & Rimmer going about their duties as lower-ranking technicians as the ship continued its mining & ore-hauling mission” vibe from this?

TAS canon status waivered, but as far as I know it's currently official A canon - so if giant Spock is a thing, having some goofballs not boldly going is also a thing

It’s just such a shame that the creators can’t produce something that everyone would like to watch. It’s either too dark or too light and always with too many mistakes

Ship needs a neck... The neck is for more than just aesthetics. Even if it's like the TOS ship's neck and it's mostly just present for the elevator. Imagine being a crewman on the Cerritos and you get an all hands to battle stations alert at 4:15am. You're an engineer, so you have to get out of bed and make your way from your room in the saucer section down the corridors, to the elevators and jeffries in the strut pylons, then down more major corridors to get to the engineering section in the secondary hull. You're talking 10-15 minutes minimum, just to make battlestations, which ideally should take no more that 3-5 mins to be fully manned.

I hope it ends up on Netflix here, it was annoying having to watch Picard on Amazon when every other Trek had been on The 'Flix.

given how much prime cannon star trek has been thrown under the bus and screwed over in recent years, this animated series which seems to not insult the star trek universe will be a welcome change. Honestly, I think your being a bit too nitpicky with the uniforms and stuff, it's alot better than fucking spore drives...

This series is probably set in the Prime Universe (STD, STP), that way they don't have to stick to close to the canon of the Original Universe (ENT, TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY) - or the Kelvin Timeline - and any discrepancies can be explained away as part of the 25% difference between Prime Universe and the Original Universe.

Nice review. I like the look of the show but the dialogue scares me! Star Tek (until Discovery & Picard) always had its lighter moments (Captain Picard Day? and Rootbeer in DS9) and even comedic episodes like "Trouble with the Tribbles" and "A Piece of the Action". However the humor war more high brow then what we see in this trailer -- with witty dialogue and clever banter. As a previous poster wrote: if they can aim towards the style of humor of Futurama then they'll do OK with most Star Trek fans. It be nice to have some "fun Trek" after the dismal violent slog of 'Discovery' and 'Picard'.

I dislike the ship design. Everything on the ship is fine... EXCEPT FOR THOSE BLOODY PYLONS, they kinda ruin the balance of the ship by making it too tall. And I disagree on a kitbash design being the workhorse of the fleet (which a second contact ship should be) Kitbashes to me imply either experimental designs or "We need a ship NOW! Not on Tuesday!" build ship during an emergency (like the Yeager class is implied to be as it appeared during the Dominion War). If you remove the pylons between Saucer and nacelles you get a ship that easily could get mistaken for a Miranda or Nebula class but still has enough differences to be its own design (or a bargain bin derivative). And on the idea that the ship has been designed as kitbash because it is one of many background ships that get overlooked in a "normal" Star Trek show: Kitbashes are unusual and are easily spotted. A bargain bin Miranda or Nebula could easily be overlooked.

I believe we are seeing the final stages of a once great franchise as the great milking has begun. From the highpoint of TNG/DS9/VOY to ENT to the Prime/Kelvin copyright clash to the dumpster fire STD and its failed rescue attempt Picard we‘re now at cartoon level. Highly doubt anything actually Star Trek is left.
