Did you notice if the new struts and inserts are shorter? Just wondering if I could modify my stock parts and just replace the inserts?
@josephheston92387 жыл бұрын
Well if you check out DIY Automotive School's KZbin Channel, My Friend Pete has 3 videos on lowering a '71-'73 Super Beetle. What he did was cut out 2 1/2 inches from the strut tube (I would have cut 2 1/4 inches and cut the welds from the spring perch and drop the perch another 1/4 inch to get that 2 1/2 drop so I wouldn't have to machine the retaining nut) and used Mk I strut inserts.

I see you have 2 bolt front suspension. If you ever decide you need more adjustment out of it, you can use adjustable coilovers for a mk1 Rabbit/Caddy pickup. All you have to do is use the factory tophat/strut bearing from the Beetle.

Really?! I might look into this, wish i'd know before hand. Thanks for the advice!

+The Shop Life yep! I just did mine two nights ago. I was just using your video to refresh my memory before I tackled the rear tonight haha. The hardest part was getting the factory suspension off that had been there since '74. I'm still running the watercooled springs at the moment, but I'm gonna be going to some taller springs with a lighter rate. They're available pretty cheap. The mk1 suspension is a bit shorter so even adjusted pretty far up with these short springs it's about a 2.5-3 inch drop. Pretty sweet setup for the $50 I paid locally for a set of used FK coils.

That's awesome man! I'm bottomed out in the front right now with intensions to go lower. I was looking around for some lowering springs because i've still got the stock ones in there now, but I'm going to look around and see if anything comes up on craigslist. Thanks again for the info
@vroomtastic14968 жыл бұрын
+The Shop Life yeah no problem! You can definitely slam it right down with this setup. I just didn't go too far because I'm still on 165/80 tires at the moment haha

Im a noob with mechanics so forgive my question, but for your rears what exactly did you do to adjust it, i know you took it out? and what do you mean buy spline? the little grooves inside? which way do you turn it? or was it that plastic black piece?

Hello I'm looking forward to doing this towards lowering my 1973 vw super beetle did you experience any rubbing it bouncing ? Cheers
@theshoplife95277 жыл бұрын
sergio portillo I didn't have any rubbing at this height although the ride was definitely not as comfortable which tends to happen when lowering any car. Wasn't unbearable by any measure thiugh

How should I turn those torsion bars in the rear, clockwise or counter clockwise to lower the back? Should i modify the position of the plate on the torsion bar or just move the torsion bar including the plate?
@stevenrubio54627 жыл бұрын
the first day you lowered your car was the day it was never low enough
@theshoplife95277 жыл бұрын
Steven Rubio haha so true. But it certainly wasn't low enough at stock height either

Did you have to cut the springs or no ??
@IRL_Quests7 жыл бұрын
Also how many hours did this take you??
@josephheston92387 жыл бұрын
You NEVER cut the springs. Cutting the springs will fuck up the suspension.

is the strut housing adjustable?
@theshoplife95278 жыл бұрын
Yes, there is a snap ring clip that you can move. There's 5-6 notches probably 3/4" apart from each other so you can adjust the height. I just left them on the bottom notch so the car sits as low as I can make it with those
@bazookamangarage3297 жыл бұрын
