How do I repair a crack in the popcorn ceiling? It runs across the room. We put texture on the crack to fill it in, but it looks like a mess over a crack.

To repair a crack in a textured drywall ceiling: 1. From each side of the crack, scrape away the popcorn texture about 3 inches surrounding the crack. 2. Cut and remove any loose drywall seam tape. 3. Apply joint tape over the crack and just enough compound to cover the tape. Allow to dry. 4. Lightly sand the repair to blend with the surface. 5. Clean the surface and apply a popcorn ceiling texture spray following the manufacturer’s instructions. It helps to practice on a scrap piece of drywall or wood first.

I have some popped nails. I was told to place a drywall screw above the nail and REMOVE the popped nail then cover with compound, sand, prime and paint. Should the screw be removed ?

The nail can be removed, if possible, or driven back into the wall. The additional drywall screw holds the drywall to the studs and should be left in place. Make sure the drywall screw head is slightly below the surface then spackle and sand the patch over the screw and popped nail.

Cut the holes to find supporting studs, however new 1/2" drywall is "thinner" (like 1/16th or so thinner) than original 80s' drywalls. What can I do?

Your drywall might be ⅝″ rather than ½″. If it is ⅝″ thick, it will be easier to make a patch with ⅝″ drywall. Tape and feather the edges with joint compound or spackling. After it has dried, sand smooth. If you use a ½″ thick patch, you can skim coat the patch to build it up to the same level as the wall. Tape the edges and apply several thin coats of joint compound or spackling until it is even with the existing wall surface. After it has dried, sand smooth.

Why do you need to add a nail above a nail pop? Why not just hammer down the nail pop and spackle over it?

You keep saying to "feather" the spackle but don't actually explain what that means. Sometime needing this video, like me, doesn't actually know what what "feathering" is.

Feathering the spackling means tapering the compound by gradually reducing the amount of spackling from the center of the repair to the edges - creating a smooth transition from the patch to the existing wall. After the spackling has dried, you can smooth the compound with sandpaper or a sanding sponge.
