The math is absolutely brutal on Long wheelbases. The fact is you can take a gladiator with 35-in tires and a 2-in lift and you are still not going to beat the break over angle of a stock Renegade Trailhawk. (I don't have a renegade but I definitely would not diss the Renegade). You didn't but a lot of people do.

3 inch lift with 37 inch tire will put you at a 28.5° breakover. In general , I've seen that when you're getting to about 30 degrees or better on all the angles then life is pretty darn good. It feels like a general rule : the 30° mark . The thing I think about also is your approach angle doesn't usually get you stuck ... your departure angle doesn't usually get you stuck.. those angles are really worrying about damage to the front or the back but you're not going to get stuck, usually. Getting stuck is about to break over angle. If you get turtled in some mud you're going to have a bad day. Goes without saying.

I did the 1.5 Teraflex spacer upfront and a 3/4" space in the rear. That kept some rake and added a little more room in all the fenders. Plus you get a tiny bit of extra belly clearance.

Great organized video from opening to closing, it has made my choice on new wheels a more confidant choice, prior to this I was looking at some 37s with a 4.3 back spacing and it looked well so looking at a 5.7 back spacing I would be more nervous with prior to seeing your videos. I'm trying to get my clearance with keeping my CG low and focusing on the tire now... Have: 2019 JLUR with 2.5" Teraflex sport ST2 lift, track bar etc. Adding AEV Bora Dual sport with ideally some Micky Thompson Baja Boss A/T (waiting patiently for them) or Deegen's 37x12.50R17LT but the tire tree is bare of late... So still waiting...

There will still be at least a half inch forward rake with the full 1.5 inch kit installed. If you really think you're going to tow or haul, get a $125 helper air bag kit for the rear, you then get no squat under load, AND spring rate adjustability on the trail with a compressor!

Since you've got both the project glad and the family hauler glad, I was curious about your opinion on 35s vs 37s for just a general, well-rounded, sort of "jack of all trades" tire setup. I've been waiting to swap wheels/tires until the stock Wild Peaks run out their life and I'd like to do it just once. Mostly mud/sand for off-roading... occasional light towing... lots of time w/ the bed loaded but usually pretty light... we're a family of beach bums from Florida currently living in Holly Ridge. 6MT Glad Rubi Really enjoy your videos - keep at it! Genuinely appreciate your pragmatism and the thoughtful consideration that goes into each decision!

Thanks! I just got back from a 500 mile trip with my family in the Gladiator on 37s. We hit some trails in Uwharrie and did a bunch of tourist stuff. If we were not going wheeling ,I would not have taken it. The extra lift and larger tires makes a big difference on the trails. For daily driving, I prefer the Gator one on 35s. It's much easier for the family to get in and out of. A 35 fits fine in the stock spare location and the 4.10 gears are fine with that setup. For what it sounds like you are doing, I would go 35s.

Been watching your vids for a little over a year and great content in all of them. This one in particular though I think will serve as the inspiration for me on what I will do, short term, for my 2023 High Altitude with the Capability Package (Steel front Rubicon bumper and FF camera). Just picked it up on 3/7/24 after an exhaustive search. Was between that and the Mojave and for the price difference and initial investment, and that it was local vs 7 hours away from me (the Mojave I was considering), the HA won out. Anyway, the approach here is what I am going to do as well, level the front out 1-1.5" and the rear 0-.5" just to fit 35/12.5/17 w/ 0-negative 6 to 12 offset wheels. I believe that will allow me to run that size tire for very little out of pocket while I figure out my long term suspension plan. With the HA having less fender flare clearance, I will go w/35's vs 37's as 37's on my Gladiator would require much more change to allow it to work at all. Likely Clayton package at some point but wheels and tires are more important now. Thanks and keep up the great content!

Did you put the 1" up front only, or in the rear too? IMO, aftermarket flares will give you a better overall result. They're cheaper than a lift, allow significantly more clearance, and don't come with the headaches and warranty problems of an aftermarket suspension modification.

I like that you did with a cheap spacer lift. Smart way to see what exact lift amount you need. Do you think a more complex lift with longer coils and either control arms or bracket drops would change the axle articulation enough to make it better? Worse? I wonder if that would even work with only 1 inch of lift. I guess you could get more down travel.
@DrivingLine
@DrivingLine 3 жыл бұрын
I like the stance, but I'm going to add a little more lift to keep the belly for dragging so much. I don't expect to get a lot more travel out of it without stepping up to a coilover setup. I'm thinking a basic 2.5-3 inch kit with a set of lower control arms should work fine for my needs. I'm just hoping the aftermarket shock valving will be better than stock.

@@michaellyden9839 Because 4 drs suck. LOL. Ive had a lot of vehicles in my life and Im getting rid of the one four door for a two door jeep. They are just too long and big 90% of the time. 2 doors are more fun to drive on the street and easier to park and lighter weight and peppier and look better. 4 dr is more practical every once in a while but not enough for me to want to lug that extra weight and length everywhere and all the time. 4 drs climb great but for hard core wheeling they almost require 2.5-3” of lift and true 37” tires and gears at a min. With 2 drs I think I can get by with 315 tires good skids and no regear.

Just an added thing not too many folks think about. The spare tire. I have a factory 2 inch lift and 35's on 17 inch rims. The 35 inch spare squeezes in just fine where the stock spare was. Not sure if a 37 would slip in there or not. May seem like a minor thing, but toting a 37 inch spare in the bed all the time would sure rub me the wrong way. Anyone tried to fit a 37 spare?
@DrivingLine
@DrivingLine 3 жыл бұрын
I've seen some 37s fit and others rub. It depends on the tire and wheel. Most of the time the issue is the tire rubs on the rear track bar. You could go with a Rock Krawler 4-link conversion and possibly get away with a 37- or 38-inch tire in the stock location. If you don't have the tow group, you might be able to inch the tire reward as well. There are a lot of factors to consider. If you're going to hit the trail, I don't think the stock spare location is a smart spot for a 37.

@DrivingLine
@DrivingLine 3 жыл бұрын
Yep! I'm in Wilmington, NC. I haven't done much testing with non-Rubicon platforms, so I'm not entirely sure 3.5 inches will be enough to keep it from rubbing the fenders on the trail. On-road, I'm sure you'd be fine. Most lift's that I have been looking at for my Rubicon say you need 3-inchs for 37s, but obviously, you can get with much less. I think the ticket will be making sure your bump stops are tall enough to keep the tire's out of the fenders. If you didn't want to go any higher, you could always get a set of Rubicon flares or some from the aftermarket and keep the lift you have. I've been seeing more Gladiator Rubicon flares pop up on marketplace lately. Best of luck either way!

With 4.5 inches of backspacing, you may experience rubbing on the fenders with 37s. The wheels I am running have more backspacing, which keeps them tucked further inside of the wheelwells. You can run 37s with 2-inches of lift, but you might want to look at a different wheel with more backspacing.

I honestly don’t know. There’s a lot of factors in play. The wheel’s backspacing along with the type of tire will make a huge difference. I’m going to guess that it’s still going to rub, but how much is hard to say.

I got a Sport S model with the MAX TOW. Do you think 35s and the Mopar 2 inch lift will work with the factory fenders?
@Ali_Mansour_Editor
@Ali_Mansour_Editor 3 жыл бұрын
I haven’t tested that setup. Based off of other non-Rubicon Gladiators I have come across, most seem to have good luck with 2.5 inches and 35s. My guess is the Mopar lift will give you a touch more than 2 inches of lift and include 2-inch bump stop landing pads. If you rub, I imagine it would be very little. Of course, much of that is going to depend on your tire and wheel package.

Max tow is same axle width, but the highline flares on the Rubicon make the real difference here. You will need a small lift or highline flares from a Rubicon to do the same as you see here on a Sport.

You'll most likely rub on the back part of the plastic bumper. You can removed the plastic panels on each side of the bumper, which will free up a little room. However, I think you will still get into the bumper a fair amount when the tire is stuffed and turned off-road.

American and its Allied forces won WWII, both in Europe and the pacific, driving on Jeep Willys. they drove it in the thick jungles of SE Asia, the endless deserts of North Africa, the high mountains and stony rivers of Western Europe. They could have chosen any tire size. They choose 32”. It had 32” tires. The American crushed the Nazies and the Japanese Emperial armies riding a Jeep with 32” tires. Surely if it was good enough for them, it should be good enough for you guys while you play around with your Jeeps, unless of course the massive tires size is designed to compensate for some other size issues…
