Wonderswan, especially Wonderswan Color, had a lot of things about it that would have made it a very attractive system for 3rd party devs. Unfortunately, the main gimmick of the system was being able to rotate it 90 degrees, and they sacrificed a lot to make that possible. The whole thing, when you hold it in your hand, just feels cheap. The catridges are even worse.

Imagine if Bandai hadn't ignored every single other market on the planet? They sold 3.5 million units (Original/Color/SwanCrystal), but that was only ever in the Japan Market. That 118 million of the Game Boy (Original/Pocket/Color) was for the worldwide market. I'm constantly amazed how many times Japanese companies fail to grasp that large amounts of money could be made overseas, many times the amounts than they'd ever in Japan alone.

Back then, Bandai was selling Tamagotchi and Digital Monster devices, maybe they thought that launching the Wonderswan in the west could risk the sales that market. Also, there it was SNK which tried to compete with the Neo Geo Pocket around the same time.

WonderSwan was also sold in other parts of Asia, including Hong Kong and South Korea. In South Korea, it was distributed by Young Toys. I know, I live in the UK and I imported the WonderSwan Color’s Korean Digimon bundle, thanks to the pack-in RPG being in English! There were also plans to release the WonderSwan in the United States, with Mattel distributing, but that was called off due to the GBA being on the horizon! Shame, WonderSwan getting a US release would’ve made up for the Neo Geo Pocket crashing and burning! Not only that, but I’d love to have seen a few WonderSwan games based on Mattel IPs, including Hot Wheels and He Man! I know He Man didn’t get another show until 2003, but surely a He Man game for the WonderSwan would’ve gotten those who were kids in the 80s interested?

Growing up, the Super GameBoy accessory for the Super Nintendo was the coolest thing. I could play Super Mario Land, Tetris, Link's Awakening or whatever else not just in greenscale but COLOR? Madness! So then, just a few years later with the GameBoy Color's pseudo Super Gameboy like limited color pallets for backward compatible games, full color remakes of games like Zelda DX and then plus brand new games, it was safe to say that the GameBoy Color became my favorite handheld of all time. Today you can get IPS fully backlit screen mods for the GameBoy Color and make truly the ultimate GameBoy.

One fun fact about Wonderswan and Digimon. As the franchise is an multimedia IP where each category such as games, anime etc. had their own team, Wonderswan had one game series that is divided into 4 parts to connect with 3 seasons of the anime which has its own story that could fit well with the tv series and the main character of this game named Ryo Akiyama was apparently very popular in Japan but there was one major problem which ruined the whole thing....There was no communication with these teams at all and that lead to really inconsistent storyline when it was mentioned in the show. One of which was Ryo's cameo in the Our War Game movie which contradicted with how the 2nd game started as it was still in development and to make things even worse, Toei Animation who handled the anime still didn't correct this in the 2nd season and only one scene was accurate to the game. The final game has ties with the 3rd season along with the previous ones and while Ryo did appear in the show, the director of it stated that it is not the same one from the game despite what the other staff member said. It also didn't help that the last two games were Japan exclusive and now we are getting the english translation patches for it. So far only the 1st game called Digimon Anode/Cathode Tamer can be placed properly into the timeline. tl;dr. 1st 3 Digimon shows and the games on Wonderswan was supposed to tie together but the lack of any communication with the teams did nothing but damage that and cause confusion along with misinformation in the fanbase.

The GBC upgrade was a bit more than just the clock bump. it had the "secret weapon" of the DMA data copier circuit. unlike the NES, you have to copy the graphical data from the ROM to the video memory, and the OG gameboy is VERY slow at it. it's slower even than something like a master system because nintendo ditched the block copy instructions from the Z80. as a result, getting something like 30KB/s on it was a distant dream. Meanwhile the GBC copy speed is on the MB/s range, allowing it not only to have much more detailed levels etc, as doing those things such as playing videos. It's why pokemon crystal has animated pokemon unlike the other games, and the cannon fodder intro, and that wolf3D demo et..

Perhaps this development history of Game Boy and Game Boy Color are why Nintendo is still obsessed with revisions of the same hardware nowadays. You can see it in the different forms of Game Boy Advance (SP, Micro), DS (Lite, DSi, DSi XL), 3DS (XL, 2DS, New 3DS, New 3DS XL, New 2DS XL) and Switch (Lite, V2, OLED).

I will say that the constant revisions for the Gameboy and DS/3DS did lead to those systems having monstrously large game libraries and a lot of backward compatibility, so the approach does have it's merits, and at least their naming schemes are still easier to sort out than the current mess of Xbox-series-whatever consoles, the Switch and Switch lite are similar enough that a Kid won't be too mad if their parents get mixed up

Makes me wonder if Nintendo is at all concerned about stuff like the Steamdeck, or will be if it starts to catch on decently. People might laugh it off now based on how things look right now but it wouldn't be the first time the future changed in unexpected ways, and Steam certainly has the game library to give the Steamdeck some weight in the market, especially if Valve stays on top of maintaining and upgrading Proton

Knowing Nintendo prototyped a 32 bit handheld as early as 1995, if I ran Sega at the time, not only would I have made sure the Saturn was easier to develop for, better functioning and more reasonably priced, I would’ve got to work on a 16 bit Game Gear successor, maybe called the Hyper Game Gear, which’d be more powerful even than the Mega Drive (not by much) and have screen technology like that of the Game Boy Color and WonderSwan! Knowing the Game Boy Color came out in 1998, its color screen technology must’ve been around for a bit by then so I would’ve looked into having such a screen but with the Master System’s resolution (The WonderSwan’s wasn’t too far off), the new handheld would be easier to port sprite scaling games to (Space Harrier, After Burner, Galaxy Force) and I would certainly give it sound capabilities that’d save you the worry of that awful Gens sound that plagued certain Mega Drive titles! (and this is coming from someone who likes Sonic Spinball!) As Sega Lord X has said on a few occasions, if Sega had a better idea of what they were doing, they might still be making consoles today!

I was just saying that if Nintendo could prototype a 32 bit handheld as long ago as 1995 and SNK and Bandai each released a 16 bit handheld nearer the end of the 90s, I would've, if I were in charge of Sega, released a 16 bit handheld around late 97 that was a true successor to the Game Gear, slightly higher in resolution than the Master System and had sprite scaling capabilities the Mega Drive didn't have!

I just wanna say I love your animations and mini comic like things that show basically "dramatized reactions" of the VIP's. I was a 90's kid, but my first console was a SNES, after constantly constantly playing NES at a neighbor's house, and asking all the time to go play over there. I've been a gamer all my life. Same with the GameBoy, I never had one. I had the Game Gear because my dad said the color screen makes it the better choice. Go figure that, I also wanted a GameBoy Pocket (and Pokemon of course), but instead got the GameBoy COLOR and it changed my world forever. The Advance was just the next logical step, I bought one and loved it to pieces. To this day, my fondest to look back on.

After going back in adulthood to pick up a Gameboy, Gameboy pocket and then a Gameboy Color, I think the Color model is the best compromise between the small form factor of the pocket and the heft of the DMG. I always traded my systems for the next system and the Gameboy (Color) is the only one I want back.

Pretty simple actually, the original Gameboy could only show a handful of different grey tones at a time, by replacing those grey tones with different sets of colors you could make it a color game pretty easy, even if it looked a little odd at times, it wasn't perfect but deffinitly cool enough to work!
@SnakebitSTI

It’s deceptively simple. The Game Boy already uses color palettes, so the Game Boy Color just added the capability to map palette colors to screen colors. The Super Game Boy does the same thing. Some GBC color maps use different colors for the sprite and background palettes, meaning you can sometimes see more than 4 on screen colors at once. The 1st gen Pokémon games are all examples, except the international version of Yellow, which is a stealth hybrid GB-GBC game.

Honestly the GBC is my all time favorite classic GameBoy system. It’s very easy to work on compared to the DMG, has an expanded game library, can be just as easily modded as the GBP, it feels more comfortable to hold, can accept a drop in backlit screen the same way the GBP can, and overall is one of the most stylish looking fo the original 3 gameboy systems. The GBA like I will always see as different systems as they run far more complex games than the original GB systems. So it’s a huge same the GBC was hated by the people that made it and then got completely sidelined by the GBA only a few years later. Long live the GBC, a system that deserves more love!

I can't blame Nintendo devs for the lack of enthusiasm for the GameBoy Color. While I knew a handful of people who would eventually get a GameBoy Color, it made absolutely no sense to me to want one. I was expecting Super Nintendo level color graphics, and after seeing the less then NES looking graphics, I was completely underwhelmed.. plus all the worthwhile titles for Color also played just fine on the original Game Boy. The only exclusive Game Boy Color title I remember wanting was Shantae, and I felt bad that it wasn't an regular Game Boy title because I feel it would have sold very well if it'd been more accessible to original Game Boy owners. Most everyone I knew who had a Game Boy Color bought it with some kind of Pokemon bundle, and beyond that there weren't any must have games that were exclusive to the GBC so they were all just playing their original Game Boy games on it anyway. I had ended up getting a Game Boy Pocket because my original Game Boy had been stolen, so the Game Boy Color being so much more expensive and having non-worthwhile graphics... it just didn't make any sense. Now, after seeing the Wonderswan in action and seeing some of the amazing 16-bit ports to that console, it amazes me that it didn't take off like fire in Japan. The Final Fantasy ports on it are really amazing.. so it confuses me that the Japanese market didn't flock to the Wonderswan.

I have an artist on the team for this and she is VERY talented. The support I get from viewers in Nebula goes in part toward paying her fairly so she can do more of these.

Tbf I’d be pretty lacklustre on a side grade to the game boy, if it was a light+colour I could see them being more excited about it. I personally love the game boy colour.

Knowing Nintendo prototyped a 32 bit handheld as long ago as 1995 and Bandai’s WonderSwan has a high resolution screen, if I were Sega, I would’ve gotten to work on a 16 bit Game Gear successor, slightly higher res than the Master System and with sprite-scaling capabilities, aiming for a Christmas 1997 release!

"I want a Gameboy Colour now, we can't wait on the Gameboy Advance." "Ok, we can bodge a colour screen in to the existing design." ... ... ... "What? You actually want a game that takes advantage of only selling point of this newish console? What a novel idea!"
