I hope nobody else uses books and stories from the 20th century as sources for the Gary Kildall story. It's really sad to see that old narrative about the plane flight repeated here in 2024. There are better sources with more of the story and context now, that make it more clear he wasn't incompetent, arrogant or flippant about the IBM opportunity.

I know you're trying to be respectful to Mrs. Wilson; but this early on, she hadn't transitioned yet, so I'd argue that using her pre-transition ("dead") name would be acceptable in this context.

Lol i had a virtual boy and other than the game i got with it i don't think i ever saw another game for sale. I'm pretty sure it was a wario game but i can't really recall. The SNES really got my all attention but the virtual boy was pretty cool too.

Been a while since I learned anything from one of these tech history videos. Too many focus on the MS/IBM deal. Somehow missed (or forgot) how important Compaq's role was. Had no idea about IBM using off the shelf components, nor how critical the bus was. Always knew that OS2 was their failed response to the threat of MS-DOS, but missed the core hardware difference.

A lot of Japanese companies Anglicized their names because they had a (not entirely earned) reputation for producing garbage, not to mention a lingering stigma because of WWII.

The PC Personal Computer wasn't invented by IBM; back in the mid-late 70s companies like Apple and hobbyists did it before IBM. Late on in the early 80s companies like IBM and Commodore got into the PC market to cash into it.

IBM didn't consider the IBM PC as something worth protecting because it was a product they were making so that their salesteam could offer mainframes and PCs. Nobody else could do that.

IBM didn't really invent anything. They just assembled a standard kit of parts and used their market power to get it accepted. The thing that was different from other suppliers is they had the market power to establish a standard. The design of the original PC was actually quite poor and underpowered.

Olivetti (that we'll see at the end of the vide as a member of the ISA consortium) had been so many times incredibly close to, yet incredibly distant from, seriously competing with IBM: In 1982 they released the M20, quite close to what a Z8000 powered PC would have been like. Actinometry made a nice video about the early history of Olivetti computers in the 60s and 70s; sure, the last attempt at competing in the 80s and 90s are a sadder story, but may be worth telling.

If any people saw this and found it interesting then watch the AMC show _Halt and Catch Fire_ which is a fictional composite retelling of the Gateway and Compaq stories just with pretty Hollywood people instead of actual nerdy, realistic looking programmer dudes. It is still a pretty good show.

All the talk about an extended 32-bit bus that would be backwards compatible with ISA, and I was surprised to see it was EISA with no mention of VLB or how PCI eventually won. Maybe that's a bonus video to make, if you haven't already. I probably could learn all about it on Wikipedia but I like your video style.

It could be argued that the ultimate realization of Gunpei Yokoi's design philosophy ("lateral thinking of withered technology" as he called it) is the Nintendo Switch. They bought a failed but viable platform from Nvidia for pennies on the dollar, bolstered it with a library of slightly enhanced ports from another failed platform, leveraged slight technological advances to realize the vision of modularity and portability that was not yet feasible in the era when Wii U was designed, secured their position in the handheld market (especially critical in Japan) by establishing a distinct blue ocean strategy offering that doesn't compete with iOS/Android, all while saving their position in the console market. Add some luck from the heavens and all these failures, orchestrated together, created such a knockout success. It's just brilliant, from a technological perspective, from a business perspective, from a branding perspective. You can tell Gunpei really inspired the generations who followed in his steps.

Police Quest Kings Quest Space Quest Leisure Suit Larry (despite being far too young to get a lot of the jokes… not sure how I convinced my parents playing those games was OK) Thanks for the story of the business behind all those memories!
