ATL is to be commended for the timing of this doc given there are developments as recent as today (Oct 23, 2023). Brief recap and today's update... 2007 - police ombudsman for Northern Ireland, Nuala O’Loan, issues a report identifying sytemic collusion between RUC special branch and the UVF (up to and including a senior UVF member, Gary Haggarty, aka 'cowhead'). 2009 - Gary Haggarty walks into a County Antrim police station and over the course of 1,100 interviews (23,000 pages of transcripts), provides information on 55 UVF murders, 20 attempted UVF murders, hundreds of lesser offenses, and two RUC special branch handlers whom Haggerty says were well aware of his, and other loyalist paramilitary activity, in the mid 1990's. 2010 - Haggarty agrees to become an 'assisting offender' and testify against fellow UVF members and the two police special branch officers. 2016 - as part of his assisting offender arrangement Haggarty pleads guilty to 201 crimes over a 16-year period from 1991 to 2007 (which includes 5 murders, 5 attempted murders, 25 murder conspiracies, 4 kidnappings, 5 hijackings, and several explosives-related charges). The following year he's sentenced to life, but this is eventually reduced to 6-1/2 years. He is subsequently relocated to England in preperaration for his upcoming testimony against his former organization and two special branch officers. 2017 - Northern Ireland’s Public Prosecution Service drops 13 cases arising from Haggarty’s interviews, including charges against the two former special branch police officers, leaving only 1 ongoing murder case. The 13 cases were reportedly dropped, according to the PPS, because they "rested solely on Haggarty’s testimony and lacked corroboration." 2023 - (today, Oct. 23) Haggarty returned to the North of Ireland and under a heavy security presence testified in Belfast Crown Court against James Smyth (the sole remaining murder case). Smyth, who denies all charges, stands accused of the 1994 double murder of Catholics Eamon Fox and Gary Convie, the attempted murder of Witness-A (a third Catholic on the worksite who survived ), illegal firearms possesion, and being a member of a prescribed terror organization (the UVF).

The British soldiers that did come back alive from north of Ireland often when they left the army they ended up on the streets homeless and just went around the pubs drinking telling people they'd been to north of ireland so it wasn't hard to track them down...
